Chikato was usually not a punctual person. As someone who typically went with the flow, he was usually a bane to any sort of proper planning. Today, however, was different. Today was the day that he, along with his best friend Gin, were going to become official APD officers! The two already finished their formal genin training, and now that they had their headbands they agreed to meet up just outside the core compound. The mountainside building was bustling with various officers of rank and merit. Chikato could not wait until he too was seen as important as all of these other people. He was practically bouncing in place as he turned toward Gin. "Gin! Can you believe it? Oh I bet we're going to be on crime fighting duty day one!" He exclaimed excitedly. His chakra flared comedically as little wisp of flames erupted out of him. Of course he did not notice this, as he was too excited to finally find a place where he would be welcomed. Where he would be accepted.

Jin was sitting with his arm outstretched, holding a stick with a string hanging off the end. A small dog happily jumping and pawing at the wavering strand. Upon hearing his friends voice Jin shot up, Chikato! I was wondering when you were going to show up. You kept the two of us waiting! The tri-colored hound pup excitedly bounded over to Chikato and jumped onto him, begging for attention. It's been both of their dreams to join the APD and Jin didn't want to let his friend down, knowing him he could not have gotten as far as he did without Chikato. How do you expect us to be top shinobi if we can't at least be on time. He walks over and jokingly punches Chikato in the arm.

Chikato briefly ignored everything Jin said as his eyes saw the dog. It wasn't as though that he meant to, but the small canine was just too cute! Of course the red haired man had to drop all of his attention and bend down to give him all of the ear scratches. As soon as his mind became clear with Jin's friendly jab,, however, he looked up and that same fiery chakra flared up. "Late?! I'm not late!" Chikato spoke up defiantly. "We said that we would meet at noon and it is just about..." Chikato raised his right wrist to look at his clock. His eyes went wide when he saw the time. It was three O'clock. Immediately Chikato's flaring passion got snuffed out like a candle to a strong breeze. His face fell completely blank as he looked at the watch. "Well... maybe their clock is broken." He said weakly as he rose to his feet in a little, pathetic manner. Immediately after his little pity party, however, the young man jolted back to life. "You know what?! Minor details. We're here now, and we're going to be the next heroes!" He cheered as he entered the plaza and gave the names of himself of Jin and himself. The man told them that their original captain had to leave on account of the delays from the two of them, but told them that a replacement would be found before long. Now that he felt a surge of guilt for costing them an opportunity, Chikato truly began to soak in grief.

As the two boys waited for a chance to speak, business resumed as normal within the core compound of the APD. After a couple of minutes, it was almost as if the two were forgotten all together. Then, all of the sudden the two boys would notice the peculiar scent of roses fill the hall. It was not a genjutsu, but a natural byproduct of the young woman's natural chakra manifested. As the two plus a dog turned to noticed her, they would see before them a woman who needed no introductions. After all, in addition to be a well decorated APD officer for her work in handling the Sandayu crisis of fifteen years prior, she was also Arashigakure's most successful pop idol. The woman smiled warmly as she had a clipboard in between her two hands. "Jin Hatake? and Chikato Alamoso?" Selina inquired as she read the two names off of the paper on her board. With a gentle smile she pushed back a couple strands of her cherry blossom pink hair. "A pleasure to meet two excited cadets! My name is Selina Rosewater. Will you two please follow me to my office?" She asked as she would wait for a sign that the two were compliant before pivoting on the ball of her right foot and turning around. She then walked her way through a couple of hallways until she turned into a room with her name and title of Lieutenant on it.
The office itself was rather modest. It was enough for the three to stand and sit comfortably, but it wasn't the size of a captain's office to be sure. There was a desk with files neatly stacked on the corner. The room had two chairs on the opposite side of her desk, and as she guided the two boys to take those chairs, she took her mahogany chair across from them. "Now then. First of, I wanted to thank you both for your interest in pursuing the path of the APD." She said warmly. Her smile was gentle and her eyes softly looked at the two of them. "At the APD we do our best not only to keep the innocent safe, but to be ever vigilant of where the next threat will arise from. We have lived a long time under the eternal vision of the former APD Captain; Kenshin Hyuga." Selina chuckled softly at the delivery of his name and title. She recalled the halcyon days when she used to work directly under the man, and well before his keen sense of justice had all of the respect it deserved. Her focus resumed, however, to address the two boys once more. "With his retirement, it falls on us to become ever more ready to protect and serve. For this reason, I would like to ask a question of both of you." Selina's eyes bounced from Chikato and landed on Jin. "What first pushed you in the direction of the APD? As a shinobi of Arashigakure, there is still plenty you can do to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Furthermore, your test scores from the academy prove both of you as incredibly capable shinobi for those of such little field experience." Selina used the moment to show on her clipboard the two boys and their individual marks on the genin graduation exam. She waited for her question to be answered by both boys before she asked another.

Jin sat straight backed, the scent of roses still filling his nose. He found it hard to stay focused when he was so close to such a famous idol, he wished he had brought one of his posters to have her sign. His companion Marumaru, whom he was contracted with since he was a child let out a sneeze at the lingering aroma. He pet the beagles head as he answered Ms. Rosewaters question almost immediately. My clan has a long history of working to protect people, and It's always been something I admired and wanted to do myself. I've has some very good teachers in that regard. He rubbed the back of his head and gave a playful smile.
He began to drift to his days training under his father, strict but fair. Learning the meaning of duty and tactics, though Jin only really excelled in the former. The bright days were shattered when his grandfather came to him. He became lost in clashing duties for a moment before Marumaru let out a sharp Woof! Those kind of thoughts can wait Jin concluded, so he turned back to Ms. Rosewater. Does the Lieutenant always take time to meet new recruits like this? Good marks or no this is our first day after all. Don't get me wrong its an honor and all! Just starting to really feel the reality of things now. His gaze turned oddly serious as he took a second to look over to Chikato then back to the Lieutenant.
Chikato leaped from his seat at the sight of Selina. She was even more beautiful in person than she was in concert! He wished that he could ask her about the world tour that was canceled at the arrival of Zaishin and ask what new songs she was going to unveil at it, but even he knew that now was not the time. Instead he followed his best friend and now the lieutenant to her office and his eyes watched Jin answered first. Chikato learned to lean in on the tone Jin brought since he was better at understanding others than he was. If it was time to make jokes, Jin normally made jokes. If it was time to strike, then Jin usually had his weapon readied already. So he listened to the answer which his friend gave, and unfortunately did get a little nervous as he realized that he was going to answer next. After all, his friend was doing this because he was trying to honor the expectations of his dad. Chikato wasn't keen on doing anything of the sort. Instead, before Jin asked his question to Selina, he did his best to improvise an answer. "Well... yeah ninja can do things, but the APD is more than just helping others. It's about making sure that justice is served, even if things get complicated." He answered. It was admittedly a bit more simple than someone trying to apply for an honored position, but he hoped that it would be enough. When Jin then asked his question to Selina regarding her freedom, Chikato watched as he also wondered why they got the VIP treatment. Then again, they were awesome right? Maybe this was a sign that they were so awesome that they were going to warp along to the higher positon?!

Selina smiled widely at Jin's answer. There was a clear passion in how he talked. A focus which was correct in its diligence. "The Hatake clan has been an incredible force of justice, yes. Our current captain, as you may know, also hails from that clan." She said, referring to the master of the infinite swords; Kojiro. Selina remembered when that young man was just a boy, and she even outranked him at a point. Of course, time flies and now she was even being asked why someone of her rank was doing interviews. The slightest hint of sorrow crossed her face. "I... I don't do much field work anymore." She said resigned. "I still aid in supportive means such as through my unique sensory jutsu and my medical prowess. So much so that I even had a place in the battle of the Ten Tailed Demon. But in regards to patrolling the streets... that's more reserved now for the officers who will become the next generation of proud, APD officers." She said as her smile then returned to a natural, nurturing grin. She then shifted through the neat stack of papers on her desk as she pulled one out. "Let's see..." She said as she opened it and gave it a quick glance. "Hmm. According to an account which came yesterday, there is a young girl who has misplaced her cat. According to your records, Jin, you do have access to some sensory, right?" She asked as she slid the file across the desk. Inside detailed the eight year old Yuri Gorrilla (yes, that is her last name), and a last known location where the cat was scene. Aka, her house. "While it's not a glamorous first case, learning how to use your talents in more recreational means is a talent which then allows you to then normalize them for more dire circumstances. Plus, she is a fast little kitty, so I'm sure that it'll take yours and Chikato's reflexes to catch the cat." She said as she gave the red haired boy a smiliar smile. There was slightly more concern, however, as she looked at Chikato, given the answer he gave. While justice is the goal of the APD, justice without mercy is simply vengeance. The boy did not look to be citing that as his motivator for joining, but it did give her just a tad more hesitance when compared to Jin's answer.

Jin had to stop himself from sighing in relief. A lost cat? He was worried it was going to be something much more serious, this was something he thought the two of them could handle. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? He shot up out of his seat, "Of course! That's totally something we could do!" He grabbed Chikato by the arm and was ready to drag him all the way to the scene of the "crime". "C'mon Chikato that cat's not gonna find itself!" It might be a small job in the grand scheme of things but Jin was anxious to start things off with a bang, anything to keep his mind of familial duties. Plus he knew that if he was together with Chikato the two of them could do anything.
In admonishment of Jins recklessness, Marumaru sighed and hopped onto Ms. Rosewaters desk, pointing toward the scroll with the information they would need. A quick "Borf!" signaling his intent. Once the scroll was safely in his mouth he trotted off after his master and friend. Once he caught up Jin patted his head and placed him on his customary spot on the top of his head.

Chikato leaned back in his chair in disappointment. Their first mission in the APD was to rescue a cat? That hardly felt like police work. And yet, immediately he picked up his energy back when he saw Jin speak of it with such gusto. Maybe he knew something Chikato didn't? Regardless, the enthusiasm of his friend was infectious, and with a true grin he stood from his seat. "Alright Ms. Rosewater! Just you wait to see how great the two of us catch that cat!" He exclaimed as he followed his friend down the hall. From behind them they could just briefly hear Selina say, "You can just call me Selina!" She was never one to stand on high ground after all. Nevertheless, with Marumaru having the scroll the two eagerly set off to the address of the young girl named Yuri Gorilla.
Of course, what they found, was someone worthy of the name. In both of their distance Zaishin lineage they would be aware of a clan of individuals of large body proportions adjoined with a horn protruding from their head. Yuri Gorilla was one such member of this clan. Although her face looked to be around eight, she equally drawfed the boys at six foot four, and easily weighed more than both of them combined. "Mister Sparklepants is still missing..." She cried in a voice so deep that it could be the baritone for an acapella group. Her loud tiers had the stench of sake given that her clan was able to create it as part of their special technique. Of course they could not get drunk on their own supply, however. As the two looked up at the sobbing giant, Chikato's awkward eyes turned from the girl to his friend. "Do you want to take the first crack at questioning or..." He said awkwardly. In truth, there was a bit of him which was now scared to fail this mission. Who knew how much worse Yuri Gorilla could get when her sadness turned to rage?

Jin had to keep his eyes from watering from the stench of sake as Marumaru covered his nose with his paws and had a pained look on his face. Acknowledging his friends question with a shrug, with little to do there was really no other choice but to start somewhere. "It's ok, we're here to make sure Mister Sparklepants gets back to you safe and sound. If you could tell us what he looks like and where you last saw him we can get started. It might not look it but we're extremely capable APD cadets." Jin took a proud stance before crumbling to the sound of further wailing and strong alcoholic scent. He was starting to curse his sensory techniques for betraying him like this.
The young girl did her best to choke out a description between her sobs,"He, he's super cute and small, and has orange fur. I let him out the other day because he likes to explore, but he always comes back for food! P-please you need to find him! He gets so lonely if he's by himself for too long!" She shakily gestured to an overfilled food bowl with the cats name painted onto it.
Jin considered this, "Do you have anything of Mister Sparklepants we could borrow?" She handed him one of his toys and he brought it up to Marumarus nose "Think you can track him with this?" He let out a bark of approval and Jin turned back to Chikato, seeing if he had anything else to say before starting.

Chikato watched as Jin took the initiative with Yuri. He was so glad his friend had the courage. Upon getting the description, he started to relax a bit with the fact that this cat was actually a real cat. There was a part of him fearing that this was going to end up being some sort of mountain lion or something. An orange cat though had to be easy enough to find. They were normally really dumb after all. Chikato bawled his right hand and slammed it into his left palm. His smile was contagious. "Alright! One cat and Team Jinkato takes home its first win." He said excitedly. It was then that he thought he caught something in the corner of his eye. "I think I see it!" He shouted as he haphazardly chased after what he thought to be the cat.

Following his friends gaze Jin had to act fast, "Total Sense!" Quickly Jins sense of smell heightened, and the poignant scent of sake grew overpowering. He hurried his step to find what Chikato was chasing, both he and Marumaru trying to see if the what they followed bared the same scent as the collar. It did! The trio raced after escaped feline, gaining on it little by little. They could see the orange fur and- damn it made use of an awning to get onto the roof! Jin used a nearby stack of boxes to leap after it, knocking several over and letting the contents scatter across the ground. "Hey watch it!" The apparent owner of said boxes was shaking his fist toward Jin angrily. "Sorry! Official APD business!""Bark!"
This cat was beginning to be heap of trouble, but hopefully they'd be able to catch it soon. Looking over, Jin could see Chikato taking position between the cat and him and an understanding passed between the two of them. A pincer attack! surely that would work! Calling after the cat to gain its attention Jin raced forward timing himself with Chikato. And... Now! They both jumped toward the cat, whom in an astounding display of feline acrobatics jumped upwards, causing the two cadets to slam headfirst into each other. They rubbed their foreheads, "There's no way that cat outsmarted us, right?" Looking over to Chikato then back at the cat, who now lay lazily on the ledge of the building. Yawning, Jin could swear the cat looked pleased at its continued escape before jumping down. Jin got up, holding out a hand to lift up his friend.

Chikato raised his hands at the man who was extremely irked at the disturbance of his boxes. "I promise that we'll fix this problem after we catch this cat!" He said as he followed his friend to the roof. And once he was there, he was truly excited to show the power of teamwork he harbored with his best friend to catch the cat. The two had mastered their pincer attack... only for the cat to slip right between the two colliding fools. As Jin helped Chikato up, the young man gave a firm shake of his head. "There's no way. It has to be dumb luck. You know what they say about cats and their nine lives." He said nervously. The taunting meow from the cat was matched with a somehow knowing look from the cat that he was a step ahead of their genin's every movement. This of course caused Chikato to grit his teeth, "Alright then...Let's spice things up a bit." He said as he started to reach into his pockets. Jin would know that Chikato had a few tricks in his sleeves for such an occasion. As he leaped into the air, he dropped a sequence of smoke bombs upon the target. The cat leaped cloud to cloud, but as he reached into the third smoke cloud, Chikato smirked. "I got you now!" He exclaimed as he raised up his right hand. On each finger was a sequence of thin wires which he expected to catch the cat without any fuss. Unfortunately, as the smoke faded not only was the cat not caught, it actually leaped off the wires with its full weight in order to force the red haired boy off his balance. As he leaned forward awkwardly, the cat then leaped off of his head and landed on another building. It then gave another tauning meow as it moved away. "We don't ever talk about this..." Chikato said as his eyes were dark with shame. He pulled back the wires as he readied to follow Jin on the next part of the chase.

With a flick of his tail, Mister Sparklepants was gladly proving difficult for their gumptious capture endeavors. The trio would give chase to him down another winding alley in the compact streets of the technologically advanced city. He wasn't able to figure out why it was so hard to lose these pesky hoomins, but it was probably their dog's fault. It was always a dog that made things difficult. "Nyah! You are a purrrrsistent lot!" It woud be up to their ears to believe what they may have heard, but a voice most definitely had come from their quarry up ahead. Sparklepants suddenly made an vertical acrobatic maneuver as he leaped up through the fire escapes to get to a better vantage point to find where that eerie feeling was coming from. "Let us see how you gag on this hairball, nyaas~!" As he ascended, he would purposefully knock down potted plants and anything else that wasn't bolted down to fall on the cadets. He'd also make an effort slipped between hanging lines of laundry to add to their obstacles in getting near. Even for a cat, Mr Sparklepants was proving to have an unnatural agility to his movements.
