โจโพโจEveryone's favorite part of campus is the DIning Hall. There is a formal dining hall for special occasions as well as a cafeteria that is more for everyday use. The cafeteria has pasta, pizza, burgers, salads, and a variety of other items to accommodate special diets.
After having reported his mission information to the higher ups of the academy they had seemed rather pleased. Of course they did, they didn't want him taking on missions before for whatever reason but now that they knew he wasn't all bark seemed they were perfectly fine with it. It sort of disgusted him, he wondered if Lord Death himself was just like the instructors at the academy he reported to. He made his way to the cafeteria, oddly hungry and unsure why really. Maybe eating Kishin Eggs was just not something a non-weapon could sustain itself on. Managing to find himself food in the larger more public and normal cafeteria area. Sitting by himself regardless, he thought about the situation he was in. His mind faltered for a moment and he wasn't ready for it. But it gave him a new resolve, one that went against everything that likely everyone else stood for. He obviously wouldn't be able to confide in the DWMA for a long period of time. However as opposed to that....maybe he could just stay as long as he wasn't caught. Maybe he could do something a bit different...he would eat his food and he continued pondering his thoughts.
โIโm sorry for dragging you from your recovery, Finnwick.โ A male professor lead the young Meister down the Halls. As they traveled through the school, Finnwick would be able to see other students. Tired or injured from the madness in Death City. It was particularly crowded with Meisters and Weapons alike.
โBut itโs come to my attention you still donโt have a Weapon partner.โ Professor Felt explained in his deep voice. โAnd with the craziness tonight, Lord Death wants to pair people as soon as possible. So itโs a little sudden, but itโs for your own good. For the both of you.โ Felt opened a door to a lone, empty classroom. โOh dammit not again.โ
Felt sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. โI shouldn't have expected her to stay still. Never mind, Finnwick. You can go off on your own while I try to find her. And this time, Iโll bring her to you personally.โ He said, with a glint in his eye and a clench of his fist.

tab"Huh?" Finnwick, having been lost in his own thoughts, blinked a few times in confusion as he looked at the professor who had addressed him. It took a few seconds, but finally the man's words registered with him and he was able to listen as they continued.
tabโBut itโs come to my attention you still donโt have a Weapon partner and with the craziness tonight, Lord Death wants to pair people as soon as possible. So itโs a little sudden, but itโs for your own good. For the both of you.โ
tab Hearing Professor Felt express his concern, Finnwick compelled to reassure his professor's worries. "Oh. No. It's no trouble. Really. I'm perfectly fine to proceed with this meeting." he said, hoping his words would ease the professor's mind. Although, truth be told, he'd be lying if he said he wasn't feeling at least a little weary about the situation. However, it had nothing to do with the events of the Madness Moon. Simply put, he was nervous about meeting the new partner that they'd assigned to him. More than just a new partner though, this would be his first partner since arriving at the DWMA. No one had expressed interest in partnering with him at this point so what if this person also didn't want him? 'No. If this is was ordained by Lord Death, then I must have faith that all will work out.' he reassured himself, giving his head a swift shake as if to free himself from his negative thoughts.

tab Once more, Finnwick was pulled from his own thoughts by the professor's statement, though this time his words didn't seem to be directed at Finnwick. As such the young meister simply looked up the professor in silence, hoping that Felt might elaborate on his dismay, which thankfully he did.
tabโI shouldn't have expected her to stay still. Never mind, Finnwick. You can go off on your own while I try to find her. And this time, Iโll bring her to you personally.โ
tab"Oh. O-okay. No worries." Finnwick replied, doing his best to hide the disappointment in his voice. "I'll just be out in the courtyard then, getting some fresh air." With that, the two parted ways, Finnwick quietly walking away with his head hung low. Perhaps this was his own fault for getting his hopes up. After all, no one had wanted to partner with him up to this point so why would this be any different? With a heavy sigh, he would his way to a lone tree within the courtyard outside the dining hall and sat down beneath its shade to await Professor Felt's return, if he ever did return.
The courtyard that Finnwick rested in, however, was far from quiet. Nearby the young Meister, a small group of students had gathered. Over time, the rowdy crowd would cheer or groan intermittently. If Finnwick went to get a closer look, heโd see a girl sitting in the middle of the circle. Sheโd be sitting casually, with a small cup in one hand and a singular die in between her forefinger and thumb in the opposite hand. On the ground in front of her was a small stack of bills. โThatโs right! Come one, come all!โ The girl exclaimed, spreading her arms in a dramatic fashion. โAt the end of the world, try and make yourself a fortune! You never know when youโll live to get the chance!โ The girl winked at the crowd as the student sitting before her, her most recent victim, shambled away from the circle.
Lizโs eyes would lock on Finnwick as she scanned the crowd. Small, quiet, meek. Gullible. She could smell the potential of her next mark like he wore a cologne called โTrick me now, please!โ This was going to be the easiest bit of coin the young Weapon had earned in her life. โWhat about you, hot stuff?โ She called to Finnwick with a wink. โYou survived tonight, you must be pretty lucky! Care to test the limits of your fortune?โ As Liz spoke, the quiet Meister would find himself shoved to the cent of the circle by the group of students. It would become clear that they wanted to see someone else lose their money to Liz. She seemed like she didnโt notice the wall of students locking behind Finnwick as she continued her performance.
โThe rules are simple. Just take that cup and that die-โ she gestured to the second set of objects that sat opposite of her- โAnd we both roll. Whoever rolls the highest number wins, capiche?โ Liz pushed a sizeable amount of money from her winnings into the center. Not a small amount, but enough that Finnwick would be able to match. โWhat dโya say, bigshot?โ

tab Though Finnwick was quite preoccupied by his own thoughts, it was hard to ignore the large group of students that had formed in the courtyard, especially with what sounded like circus ringleader at the center of it all. "Come one! Come all!" she'd cry, drawing all who heard towards her. While Finnwick didn't move from his spot beneath the tree he sat against, his eyes were drawn towards the sound of the voice. He couldn't get a clear view from so far away but between the gaps of the crowd's legs, he was able to get the gist of what was happening. It seemed that the girl was challenging members of the crowd to some sort of game, though he couldn't make out the exact details of how it was being played. Suddenly though, as he continued to look on in curiosity, their eyes met through the crowd. The next he knew she was calling out to him to come join her, the crowd parting as they all turned back to look at him. "M-me?" Finnwick said, his voice trembling with shock. He couldn't believe that someone had actually taken notice of him, especially with so many others around.
tab Now the center of attention, Finnwick began to experience the weight of having so many eyes now on him. Honestly, it made him want to run away, back to the safety and seclusion of his dorm room. However, he had told Professor Felt that he would wait for him in the courtyard so he had an obligation to remain there. He also didn't want to be rude to the girl who had called out to him. Thus, he pushed himself to his feet and slowly made his way towards where she sat, several students pushing forward as he went. However, once she began explaining the rules of her game to him, he quickly realized he had made a horrible mistake by heeding her call. Apparently, these students were all gambling on a game of chance, something he as a member of the church of death didn't have a place in. "O-h dear. I-I'm terribly sorry. Th-there's been a terrible mistake. I couldn't possibly-" Unfortunately, Finnwick's protest seemed to go ignored, as when he turned to leave, he found his path now blocked by a wall of students. The same eyes that had watched him walk into the circle were now glaring at him intensely.
tab With no way out, Finnwick was forced to turn back to the girl. "Heh. I suppose one round couldn't hurt." he said nervously as he lowered himself to the ground. Now seated across from her, Finnwick could see the full amount of money that she had wagered and swallowed nervously. 'Lord Death help me.' he silently prayed. His hands shaking, he slowly picked up the cup and die, placing the two small objects inside the other. "S-so like this? he said as he began to shake the cup. However, when he finally released the die from the cup, he was too scared to look at the result, closing his eyes tight as it rolled across the ground.
โYes, exactly like that!โ Liz grinned from ear to ear once Finnwick rolled the die. It was as if there was a light that shone in her eyes once she saw his result. โOh thatโs so unlucky.โ The disappointment in her tone was about as genuine as the leather she wore. Liz still had her lips upturned in a grin despite the Meisters bad luck. โWho knows, maybe my die will break?โ
Liz snickered as she threw her die into her cup. She made a show of shaking it around. If Finnwick was astute, heโd see a weird motion from Lizโs sleeve. But before he could say anything about it, the girl let her die loose. It clattered against the stone, coming to a stop next to the already rolled die. Itโs result was a three, just enough to beat Finnwick. โOh so close too!โ She gasped. โHow about this? Wanna try again? You win, you can have all of what Iโve won. But if you win, then you become my personal slave. You already owe me, so I donโt think you have to room to say no.โ

tab His eyes still tightly shut, Finnwick had no idea what the results of his roll had been. However, given gasping and the murmuring of the crowd around him, he imagined there could only be one of two options. Either he had rolled extremely well, or extremely poorly. Unfortunately, when he did finally work up the nerve to open his eyes once more, he sadly found it to be the latter. "Oh dear." he whispered softly to himself, his face sunken with concern. This was the worst possible result he could have gotten. Surely, this was a divine punishment from Lord Death for calling upon his name for something as selfish as gambling. Honestly, he was more upset over such a lapse in judgement than the actual result. Clearly, he would need to spend at least hour in prayer as penance for his actions. That would have to wait though as he still wasn't quite out of the woods yet regarding this matter.

tab Hearing these words, Finnwick turned his attention back to the girl who sat across from him. He could appreciate the sympathy she showed him through her shared disappointment (or at least, that's how he perceived her words) but it was unnecessary. He had already accepted his fate. As expected, her roll ended up being higher than his own, though not by as much as he would have guessed. And with that, the game was settled ..... or so he believed.
tab To Finnwick's surprise, the girl offered him a second go at the game, a chance at redemption. Given that she had already claimed victory for herself, this was incredibly generous of her or so he thought. However, having learned the error of his ways, he simply couldn't take her up on her proposal. "Oh? That's very kind of you to offer but I ...." he began to say, intending to excuse himself from the situation. However, just as before, he found himself unable to leave from his current position, the crowd behind him leering over him in an effort to keep him seated. "I-I suppose one more game couldn't hurt, since you were kind enough to offer." he said nervously, caving once more to the pressure of his peers.
tab His hands trembling, Finnwick slowly picked up the cup and die. Like before, he closed his eyes and cast a small prayer. However, this time wasn't in service of a positive outcome but something more akin to a divine intervention to rescue him from his current situation. With that, Finnwick took one last deep breath and released his die.
โจโพโจApotheosis felt his hands shaking from the pull of magic. He was trembling with excitement and even a sense of fear over losing himself to his own power. He felt his sensation from the moment he left the theater district. His powerful magic burned down one of the many theaters and collapsed the burning building on top of one of the Kishin eggs. He absorbed more souls for his spellbook and sent them to the conduit. Once he left the area, he desperately wanted to return to Arcana but instead his Queen commanded him to infiltrate the DWMA. He had never even seen the DWMA up close much less infiltrated it. Not to mention the fact that Apotheosis was horrendous at undercover missions, that much should have been known to the Queen. Although he supposed it was possible that she was frightened by his quickly growing power and just wanted to have him killed. Either way, as he approached the DWMA's entrance he shrouded his soul in a cloak of magic. His identity as a witch was now completely concealed.
โจโพโจApotheosis stomped through the DWMA with a completely obvious fish out of water look. Yet none would be able to sense that he had the soul of a witch. His hair hung in red curtains over his face and his cape billowed behind him. He obviously appeared as a man nearing the age of thirty nonetheless so he was unsure if he could pass as a student. Apotheosis was so arrogant that he had difficulty conceiving of himself as anything other than who he was. Nonetheless, Reina wanted him to gather intel on the place so he had to talk to anybody. He felt uncomfortable enough just being outside of Arcana, his home and personal paradise filled with glorious magic. He walked into the dining hall and looked around at the various students eating and socializing. This seemed to be the perfect place to blend in. He walked over to Liz and Fennwick and gave his best impression of a DWMA student. "How do you do, fellow kids?" He asked with a complete lack of familiarity with normal behavior and human lingo. "Oh I was sure having a good time swinging my weapon around the other day. Let me tell you." The poorly covert witch bragged about being a meister. This was how meisters talked, right? "What game art thou playing?" Unfortunately, Apotheosis's uniquely pompous way of speaking was already showing its cracks.

โDealโs a dealโs a deal!โ Liz cheered, going to roll her die as Finnwick loaded his up. Easiest game of her life, zero effort at all. Then again, with the way that Liz played, she always won. A small chain pulled the die from the cup just as another one swung in a second. The way the Weapon held her cup hid the grouping of loaded dice she carried in her sleeve. Liz loosed the die, going so far as to make it roll into the Meisterโs, knocking it out of the way. While she kept a slightly sinister grin on her face, Liz kept her excitement under lock and key. Soon sheโd have someone to do her lousy homework and missions for her, instead of her exerting herself. DWMA was a breeze after all.
However, a new challenger knocked her back to reality. Liz looked away, not paying attention to the result of the dice as she turned to the strange man. โA rousing game of mind your damn business.โ Lizโs voice was short as she narrowed her eyes at the man. Was he a new student? He definitely didnโt look like he fit in. He dressed like it was constantly Halloween, or that his wizard costume was stuck to him. โDo you know this freak?โ She asked Finnwick. Something felt off, but she couldnโt place it. But it was in her nature to be suspicious for no reason, anyway.
โListen, geezer. This boy and I are getting some business done. So if you and your partner would make like a tree and ******** off, thatโd be grand. A huge favor, actually.โ Liz paused. Blinking, she looked around the new person. โWhereโฆ. is your Weapon, anyway?โ

โจโพโจBeing undercover was awful. Especially if he had to put up with pieces of work like this student. "How rude!" The sorcerer scoffed and had half a mind to throw a fireball at the degenerate who sat before him. When she asked where his Weapon was, he was stumped. There were no other Witches infiltrating the DWMA who could act as his weapon. Did all Meisters need to have weapons? It was all very confusing for the Witch. "They're over in the land of...mind your own damn business!" Two could play at that game as the rousing sorcerer continued to be offended. "Now then, if you're done asking rrrrrrrrrridiculous questions, let me in on this game!" The pompous Witch rolled his r aggressively and pompously as he pointed his finger in the air and stared at the dice game on the table. He had to fit in somehow so he presumptively took a seat next to Fennwick.

tab Finnwick felt a small glimmer of hope swell within him when he saw the three he had rolled ........ only to have it immediately snuffed out by his opponent's roll of a four. So close and yet so far. And with that Finnwick once more found himself in the pits of despair, having amassed a debt he had no way of paying off. 'This is going to cost me at least a week's penance.' he thought with a sigh.
tab However, before Finnwick was able to discover the exact details of his debts, another figure entered the circle with quite the spectacle. "How do you do, fellow kids?" Hearing a rather peculiar greeting, Finnwick looked up to find himself staring at someone who appeared far too old to be a fellow student. And yet, they had used the term "fellow kids" so that must have meant they were much younger than they looked. At least, that's how Finnwick rationalized it, always doing his best to not judge a book by its cover. As for the males question as to what game the two of them were engaged in, Finnwick didn't know how to respond. Fortunately, the girl across him wasn't shy at all about speaking with the newcomer, though her manner of addressing him was less and cordial, much to Finnwick's horror.
tab When asked whether or not he knew this new arrival personally, Finnwick shook his head. This shouldn't have come as a surprise though. He wasn't exactly the most outgoing of individuals and didn't really know anyone outside of those who frequented the school's chapel. Still, despite their lack of familiarity and the girl's mistreatment, the fiery-haired male still took a seat next to Finnwick, demanding to be let in on the game. "Oh. I-I don't think that's such a good idea. This game is-" he began to warn the newcomer of the dangers of engaging in such a game, but instantly found his words cut off when he caught sight of the glare from the girl sat across from them. 'N-nevermind. Forget I said anything." he quickly spat out, lowering his head in fear.
โYou sure you want in on this game, old timer?โ Liz cocked an eyebrow at the man as she gave him a skeptical look. Finnwick began to dissuade him from playing, but the young girl shot him a glare that shut him up in a second. She couldnโt put her finger on it, but something about this bozo made Lizโs spine chill. However, a mark was a mark. And she never turned down easy cash. โWhy not? Tonightโs been rather unlucky for some people, might as well test your luck. You might win a jackpot besides not dying tonight.โ
โAlright, the rules are simple. You take one die and one cup, and roll the die. I go after and whoever rolls the higher number wins. Didja manage to keep up with that?โ Liz motioned for Apotheosis to grab the cup Finnwick had been playing with. โThe catch is that you have to have something to bet with, โcause the game ainโt no fun without stakes, savvy?โ The Weapon picked up her cup and die and began to spin the container, the die rattling around inside creating an echo in the courtyard. โMy new pal here wagered his own freedom and lost, just to give you an idea of what weโre working with.โ Liz continued with a nod to the Cleric sitting next to Apotheosis. โSo whatโre gonna offer? Itโs gotta at least be this valuable.โ She continued, patting the mountain of cash at her feet.

โจโพโจApotheosis looked at the gambling table and noticed the pile of what he could only assume to be Finnwick's bets accumulating on Liz's side of the table. This poor sap. Apotheosis smirked but still felt a sense of empathy for the poor kid. He seemed timid but kind enough so Apotheosis already fancied him more than this Liz degenerate. "Oh please, you can't kill me, let's not even engage in that as humor." The undercover sorcerer gave a dismissive wave of his hand. Since Finnwick had already lost much, including his freedom, Apotheosis was determined to match it and do whatever necessary to win it back. "I'll beat you easily, I have no prrrrroblem betting my most prized possession." The Witch played up his own bravado to make himself seem like an even more foolish mark. He reached over his shoulder and retrieved a staff that was as tall as him. He leaned it against the side of the table for Liz to examine. "My partner and I killed a Witch on one of our missions and took her staff. It's a fire magic staff with real gemstones. I've had it appraised at thousands of dollars. The only reason I haven't sold it myself is sentimental value. Take a look." There was no doubt that the staff was of actual monetary value. It had a fiery gemstone at the top that looked like an orb and swirled with fiery magic.
โจโพโจApotheosis then tapped his chin as he appeared to calculate what he wanted from Liz. Even though he secretly already knew what his plot was. "That staff is even more valuable than this chap's life. Although I could use a new manservant. So I want you to put up everything you got from this fool." He introduced his wager to Liz. It was essentially a double or nothing type of proposition. Apotheosis snatched the cup from Finnwick with his usual haughty demeanor. He shook the cup furiously before letting the die drop. As the die fell to the table's surface, one of his wrists subtly flicked ever so slightly. The slightest use of magic allowed the die to settle midair and land on whatever side the witch wanted. When it landed the die revealed two dots. Apotheosis was shocked and disappointed immediately. "Oh no, my staff! Please! I could never lose it! It's prrrrrriceless!" He pleaded as Liz was likely getting ready to perform her roll. Any number above two would easily best him, which Apotheosis knew all too well, he did not want to raise suspicions. His fake sorrow was over the top and histrionic like the rest of his personality.
โจโพโจIf Liz were to take the cup and go along with Apotheosis's bet the sorcerer would hide his face in his hands for a moment. He almost sobbed before gently resting his hands in his lap under the table. His facial expression appeared crestfallen if Liz shook her cup. Once the die was released Apotheosis would flick his wrist again, ever so slightly, and out of sight. The die was slightly adjusted in midair by the magic so that once it would land on the table, only one dot would show. It would take the keenest of soul perception meisters to detect the negligible amount of magic used to control the dice.

tab Dehumanizing. That was probably the best word Finnwick could use to describe his current situation. Not had he all but lost his freedom is this game of dice, but now he was even being traded like a common item. He had thought maybe this older student had come to rescue from his predicament but it seemed now he merely wanted to claim ownership of the young meister for himself. Whatever small amount of self-worth Finnwick may have possessed before this encounter had been all but crushed into dust. All he could do for now was watch in silence to see who would ultimately claim the title of his keeper.
tab All that being said, even in his despair, Finnwick couldn't help but be a bit curious when the fiery meister presented a staff that he had supposedly claimed as a trophy upon besting a witch. Even though he'd never met a witch before, he had been told many stories of their might and magical prowess. Supposedly vanquishing one was the ultimate test of a team's capabilities. If this meister and his partner had truly vanquished a witch, they must have been an incredibly strong duo. There was probably a lot Finnwick could learn from a guy like him. As strange way, he found himself secretly hoping that he would win the next round, because if he had to serve someone, it'd be nice if he could at least grow from the experience. Unfortunately, with a measly roll of two, any hopes Finnwick had were all but dashed. At that point, all he could do was offer a silent prayer, a prayer that, by some miracle, Liz rolled a one.
