Greetings,

Welcome to the town of Sparks Hollow! I'm your mayor, Drizelda, but you can call me Dizzy. All my close friends do! Here in Sparks, we offer a haven for lost and wandering souls. Our enchanting atmosphere is perfect for soothing even the weariest of Pae. Nestled into the jungle near the Fae Clearing, we offer a truly magical experience. We have a creek flowing from To'ul Mountain that gushes down a small waterfall into the shining star of our town - the sparkling Ailin Lake! Just big enough for our aquatic friends to relax and call home. We have a little something for everyone whether you like the quaint and cozy homes on the ground or the amazing views of the homes up in the treetops. Everyone's welcome in Sparks Hollow!

Here are the 10 golden rules for navigating Sparks Hollow.
  1. Get to know your neighbors!
  2. Everyone is on their own path in life. We respectfully request residents and visitors alike be courteous and patient with our neighbors and guests.
  3. Use everything in moderation. We do not have unlimited resources.
  4. Share your discoveries!
  5. We assign all residents their own Sparkfly*, and they are only entitled to one. Additional Sparkflies are available for purchase or rent.
  6. Keep our waterways clean! Remember, our friends live in those waters.
  7. The temple ruins are dangerous for casual exploration so they are off-limits and only the mayor can grant permission to explore and archive.
  8. Knowledge is Power! We encourage all young pae to attend school.
  9. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to donate new seeds to our Seed Bank for the preservation of our island's crops and flora. Withdrawals are also available!
  10. Be sure to clean up after your pets!

*Sparkflies offer little sparks of electricity, to power future innovations. They also are a slight source. They are not generators, however, if you line a bunch of those lil suckers up, I'm sure they'll power some big things.

Sparks Hollow

Village Name: Sparks Hollow
Founding Members: Drizelda, Joi, Lucia, Lucius, Shae, Jarek

What kind of Village is it?
  • Hidden Faerie village based on the ancient faerie villages from the Second Age. It is academic with a focus on learning the true history of the Fae. It also provides a home for wayward fae and fae hybrids. There are many historic points of interest in addition to properly restored dwellings that provide a unique living experience that is like a step back in time. Sparks Hollow is known for its top-notch education program and provides classes for all ages for any education level. There is also an island-rated teaching program to provide the tools other pae may need to start a teaching program in their home village.

    Location description
  • Fairytale village in Northern Loka Nei that combines the new natural jungle with the original forest setting. There is a network of dwellings in the top of the tall jungle trees, connected by bridges. This part of the village is an ongoing restoration project overseen by Lucius and all denizens are encouraged to participate as a means of learning a new facet of history.
There is a tranquil creek that flows down a gentle waterfall to fill a large, very deep crystal clear pond. The pond has many small caves towards the bottom that can provide a cozy home for the water-inclined Pae who wish for a sanctuary away from the lake and busy waterways. From the pond, the creek flows through the center of the village before snaking towards the Chai'en Ravine.
There are homes built into the trunks of many of the trees, and some freestanding homes as well, constructed of local fallen timber. There are lights provided by Dizzy's clan as her family's power is electricity. Her children and granddaughter all have the natural ability to create enough charge to light the entire village at twilight. The lights naturally dim to make way for the moonlight.

  • 9.5N 10.75W Sparks Hollow is located in Northern Loka Nei Jungle, about a day's walk from the Fae Clearing. The location is very important for the study of Faerie Pae'il history, and discovery of the lost artifacts.
  • The village itself is quite large when taking the size of the treetop homes into account. On the ground, it looks like a cozy, welcoming little place. The ground-level is approximately 2 and a half square miles. It is hard to measure the upper level as it sprawls in all directions, and as the research and renovation project goes on, it will only get bigger.

    Village Details
  • Monetary unit: Like the rest of the island, the village primarily operate on the barter system. When trading with other villages, they use seeds as currency because the village has a large seed bank to ensure the future of their crops, and as a means to acquire goods they need. Gold, silver, and copper have been discovered in a far off village, so the whole island has been slowly converting to a national currency.
  • Religion: Primarily the Guardians are recognized as the benevolent creators they are. However, spirituality is a very personal thing, so there is no preaching or censoring. The founding members live by example, so there will be a lot of praise and gratitude to the Guardians for their protection and abundant blessings.
The Goddess of the Soul, Psyche is recognized as the deity watching over Sparks Hollow, blessing the denizens for happy, prosperous lives full of love. She also protects the village from the Taint.

  • Agriculture: There are some hanging gardens suspended from the treetop village. Some are greenhouses and some mimic colder climates so they can have a variety. It is also a fun challenge for some of the fae to see if they can get things to grow in unconventional conditions.
Many seasons ago, as a result of some bizarre twist of fate and scheming on the Avalon fairies part, Joi acquired seeds and clippings for some very rare and useful plants, fruits, herbs, and other magical reagents. Denizens are allowed to grow anything they want of the available seeds for the season in their gardens. To prevent greed, only one type is allowed to be grown per season. This also encourages variety and diversity among crops and trading between denizens.
      Available crops:
    • Mushrooms: a large variety including rare ones only cultivated in this village that is required for some potions and spells.
    • Fruit: Bananas, Bromeliads (pineapple), Sapodilla
    • Coffee Beans, Cacao
    • Various nuts
    • Rare Wood: Rubber Tree, Sapodilla
    • Chicle (latex extracted from the trees used for gum)
    • Ferns, Bamboo
    • Spices: Devil's Tongue, Jungle Rose, Pearl Flower, Purple Nettle, and Titans Orchid.
    • Magic reagents: Bee Fern (attracts bees-good for farmers), Dawn Singer (stinky flower), Fairy Queen (considered a most beautiful flower in the world, it is very rare), Jingle Bells (collects rainwater, which mixes with pollen to create a natural sleeping potion), Lizard Tongue bush (very slimy), Purple Kiss (like a purple dandelion during the white fluffy stage), and Witch Petal (poisonous)

Note: The trees on this list cannot be planted in hanging gardens.

  • Labor Force: horticulturists, researchers, archaeologists, teachers, gatherers, hunters, harvesters (wood, chicle, wild fruit, mushrooms), archivists, construction, landscapers
  • Industry: chicle extraction, exotic lumber, processed magic reagents, walnut butter, bamboo furniture
  • Natural Resources: Mushrooms & lichen, nuts, cacao, rainwater, fireflies, palm
  • Exports: Furniture made of bamboo or sapodilla, cacao, coffee beans, chicle, nuts and nut products, spices and magic reagents
  • Imports: textiles, fur, cotton, fish, hemp and hemp products (rope), sugar, honey, luxury items such as pearls, gemstones, ore, anything made of metal.
  • Major Trading Partners: Mountain town, Telrunya City, Kekomura

  • Communication: Primary communication is mellons. However, writing is a very important part of this village's communication. They use the common written and spoken languages of the island, however, there is a fae-specific language taught to the children to preserve a dying language. They cannot read or write any of the different elemental runic languages yet because a pae proficient enough to teach it is yet to move to Sparks Hollow.
  • Broadcast: via bulletin boards and public postings. And messenger fairies.
  • Transportation: Most fly or swim. But for transporting goods they use reindeer-drawn carts or hot air balloons. Fae are magical so many can just use their staff to levitate things to carry them shorter distances.
*There are 3 reindeer currently and they are spoiled rotten. The younger fae dote over them and they're often fed fruits and other sweets. They came from the mountains and seem to do okay in the tropical climate of Sparks Hollow; not requiring the colder climate. Dizzy suspects they wanted a pampered life so they moved in. The third one is still young, and it was cause for a huge celebration when he was born.

  • History: Sparks Hollow is not the brainchild of Drizelda, the founder. No, it was her estranged son Lucius, who upon returning to the place of his birth that first sparked the idea.

      And so the legend goes:
The first Faerie Pae'il born on Telrunya in thousands of years, the young Dizzy built her home high atop a tree in Loka Nei Forest when the island was still small and floating in the air. It was there she lived with her loving husband and built a life and raised a family. Her progeny chose to live close to home, building their own dwellings in the neighboring trees. Joi chose to keep her home ground-level.

And out of the blue (literally), the island slipped out of the sky, coming to rest in the middle of an uncharted sea. It wasn't the smoothest of rides, and the island was in shambles. The land started to change, and adapt to the new climate. New cracks and fissures unveiled hidden secrets long buried by antiquity.

All around Dizzy's home, there appeared broken down old buildings that had been built right into the trees. As the forest transformed into a jungle, more of these buildings appeared.

MEANWHILE, Joi had made discoveries of her. And I'm not talking about the guy she met. She and her new companion found themselves lost in some kind of ruined palace. Upon escape, they realized it was underground, hidden beneath the Fae Clearing. Within this underground deathtrap, the pair found many texts and scrolls.

When Lucius returned, he started studying and researching the mysterious ghost dwellings. He discovered that they were part of some ancient fae village and began restoring the buildings and bridges that he could. He also found that the villages sprawled for miles in all directions in the treetops just under the canopy of the newly transformed jungle. The ruins were not visible from the forest floor or by air.

When Joi and Jarek brought back news of their adventure and discovery, Dizzy made the decision to bring on more fae to research and excavate. To help build on the findings. It was Lucius that said the newly restored huts in the trees could serve as housing for the volunteers.

And as more fae moved in to help out, a community was born.

With a little elbow grease, a few extra hands and a few seasons later, Sparks Hollow was born. So named because Dizzy's children are the progeny of the original electric fae, and if pae had last names, their family would be the Sparks.

Obviously this is just the SparkNotes version. wink The village has a rich history already in the years since its creation. Dizzy has translated many uncovered texts and has become the local expert on faerie pae'il. Of course, not much was known anyway, so it didn't take much to become the expert. But she has found her destiny and will lead another young fae in the right direction as they learn of their heritage and ancient beginnings.

  • Influence: fantasy fairytale villages in forests where the homes are built into the trees as well as lil communities of mushroom-topped homes. Add to this a sprawling network of dwellings and bridges in the treetops.
    This is one inspiration

  • Archecture: Sturdy wooden structures that are organically connected to the trees and ground. Very ornate woodwork and round, curvy construction. No two dwellings are alike. "There are no straight lines in nature"

  • Government: Council - Dizzy heads the council, her eldest daughter Joi, is on the council and works as the librarian and there are 3 other elected members. Currently, Lucius serves on the council as the head of the infrastructure until a more qualified villager steps up. His main job is restoring the ancient treetop village structures. The other two council members are had of agriculture and head of finances(trading). Dizzy casts tie-breaker votes and can veto anything she deems unsafe, or not in the best interest of Sparks Hollow.
    • Detainment: There is a room built into the trunk of the thickest tree that when there is a need for detainment, is guarded. Otherwise, it's used as a storage shed.
    • Law Enforcement: There is a peacekeeper that handles law breakers

  • Entertainment: Public entertainment that is provided includes fairy plays in the Village Commons; spa with massage, swimming, and a celebration every full moon that lasts through the night. The waterfall serves well as a slide and is quite fun. The rest of the entertainment is provided by the individual and no one is judged if they have unique interests.
  • Education: This is the highest priority in Sparks Hollow. Dizzy has uncovered and learned a great deal of Telrunyan history, with a focus on the Fae, so she trains new teachers so they can teach the children. Basic education is also provided by the locals. Children raised in Sparks Hollow will have a bias towards fae and magic and speak both the common language and the fae language. For adult education, many master crafters regularly take on apprentices. There are also hands-on research trips to the ruins near the fae clearing in order to gather data.
  • Health Care: They are currently lacking in specialized healers so they are looking to lure a pae with toast to take up residence as their main healer. Until then, the local Avalon might heal if they're feeling inclined that day. In the mean time, they rely on healing potions imported from Kekomura as well as a few home remedies that denizens mix from locally grown herbs.

  • Finances: There is a seedbank where all seeds from each year's crops are stored. When planting season arrives, denizens withdraw what they need. Seeds can be used as monetary unit when trading with others in the community. Detailed records are kept on deposits and withdrawals. Gold, Silver, and Copper have made their way into Sparks Hollow as it becomes more commonly accepted as a method of payment.

  • Archival System: There is an entire tree dedicated solely to displaying everything that is unearthed regarding history. The first story includes a museum displaying many of the priceless artifacts from the ruins near the Fae Clearing. There is also a comprehensive library that houses the most in-depth studies into Telrunyan history. Dizzy's writings are available for public reading. There are also many ancient books that Dizzy works on translating in her spare time. There are also some rescued books from the HQ library wreckage that was saved before fairies looted it. (Dizzy does not know the books went to the City) All in all, the library is impressive and there will never be a lack of reading material.
*Joi serves as the librarian and can take on helpers

  • Housing: If a new denizen wishes to live on the ground level, the council member that is head of infrastructure organizes a house building party. The whole village will get together to set up a simple little cottage and celebrate afterward to welcome the new villager. Fae will find any reason to get together to celebrate.
If a new denizen wishes to live among the dwellings in the treetops, they merely need to choose one that is available for habitation. Many of them are not yet, as they are still being restored, but there is a fair number ready for new residents. All that is asked in return is to contribute to the village's main focus in restoration, research, and discovery. And self-sufficiency. There are many social programs for new villagers to get started, but after a season, they are expected to paddle their own canoe.

  • Commonality: Sparks Hollow is a community that prides itself on providing an authentic Faerie lifestyle. There is an emphasis on getting in touch with one's roots and learning through experience. Knowledge is the most valuable asset any pae can possess, and in Sparks Hollow, they nurture wisdom and encourage innovation. Even though the village may appear to be a step back in time, research and discoveries keep it modern and progressive.
Denizens should share a love of learning, willingness to work, and be interested in the history of the island.
