It never got easier. She could only imagine it; how once beautifully this small village had been; how cheerful the people who had once lived here been; the bustling of their everyday; a simple and happy life but, now that was all gone.
Her feet crunched the scorched remains with each step she took. Each way she looked, there was nothing but black ash and the occasional piece of a building that told her this place had once been inhabitable. She tried searching for any signs of survivors, or even life itself, however it all seemed to have been burned away. Even the enhanced sense of smell she possessed for being a dragon cold not detect anything but cinders of burned homes.
She had been merely passing by earlier when the scent allured her to investigate. From the looks of it, it had not been long since this village had burned down. Give maybe 2 or 3 days. She could not tell what had happened to the people who had lived her. She prayed they had made an escape to a place safer, as there was no obvious signs of bodies, but underneath the ash, she could somewhat faintly make out the smell of burnt flesh. She could only hope this hadn't become the fate of all of them.
She had heard of dark mages causing issues near this area. In fact, that's why she had come out to begin with. She had accepted a mission to confirm these suspensions without engaging, as that matter would be taken care of later based on her verdict. Her heart sank at the thought she somehow may be responsible for this town's end. She thought about if she had come earlier, just maybe then she could have prevented all of this from happening. She frowned at this thought. The flowers across her body reflected this, as their colors changed from white to a deep blue.
There was the possibility dark mages hadn't done this as well. She could sense no trace of magic, something she was more adept at given her circumstance. Though the lack of a magic signature could just be due to how long it had been.
She continued to make her way around the charred land, her eyes keeping low to the ground if not to search for something that may stand out. After around 20 minutes of wandering, her eyes caught a glimmer of something buried in the ash. She reached down and picked it up. Brushing the black off, it was revealed to be a small metal heart; a locket. She inspected the outside, looking for any details of engravings only to find a smooth, simple and plain finish.
Opening it, inside was only a single thing. A heart shaped cut out of an old photograph made to fit inside. It was of a girl, she appeared very young, and Aurelie couldn't imagine much more than 6 or 7 years old. She bore a wide, awkward smile, and it was evident she was missing a few teeth which made the dragon slayer suspect the age she did. Her brown hair was all frazzled into two twintails to try to appear as neat. Bright green eyes looked directly at you when gazing upon the photo. But despite all the imperfections, there was a feeling of happiness that shone through her expression and poured out. It was this look alone that made Aurelie realize, she could not let this place end like this. A pang of empathy reached her heart, to which she responded by closing her eyes and inhaling deeply.
"The fallen stars are no more than stones, lost a soul's resolution is made, let the flames burn in reflection of the wishes..."
The words flowed from her mouth in a melody. In the same instant, a soft green light began to emit from the mage's body and spread out gently to the ground. Moments later, from the same place the light touched, green sprouts rose from the sea of soot.
"...The curses that destroy you, the prayers that forgive you, are both light kept inside my chest..."
The speckled the land with their buds at first slowly, but as the song continued, soon a hysteria had enveloped the village's ruins. Flowers of all kinds, all colors, engulfed the land and swallowed up the ash. Forming and blooming uncontrollably, the once black remains were replaced with a rainbow. All whilst Aurelie stood in the center, it was as if her voice was guiding the takeover, singing life back to this desolate place and transforming into a blossoming paradise.
"...In a world falling apart, from a gradually dissolving voice, will bloom the flowers of life."
