A stage and dance floor has been constructed in the middle of a clearing in the forest. A DJ provides music in between special musical performances.

As evening creeps in, the DJ on stage lowers the volume of the acoustic music and cuts in.

"Good evening witches and gentle-wizards! Welcome to the first night of the Fantastic Beasts Festival! I hope you're all having a bloody good time! Because we have a treat for you loves!

"Coming on stage for a live musical performance, would you give a round of applause for the lovely duo: Skylar Maclellan and Miles McLellan!"

Annalise wandered through the forest festival, feeling right at home. It was a little more hippie than she was used to, but there was food, music, and crowds. It was the perfect amount of chaos, just wild enough to be exciting. After walking through the game area and finding out that she wasn't old enough to play any of the games, the girl ventured to the main grounds and bought some food. She snacked while she looked at all of the other stands. As much as she wanted to buy a broom, they were just too expensive. Instead, she chose an invisibility necklace. It was pretty and simple, just her style, plus the idea of a necklace that could make her go invisible was just cool. Looking over the note with the rhyme to make the necklace work, Annalise stuck it in the pocket of her jeans to keep it safe. She approached a clearing that looked like it had a stage and a DJ booth set up, her brown eyes lighting up. "Now this is my scene," she said to herself, jogging up to join the crowd of people around the stage. It seemed like one act, two people playing a violin and a cello, was just ending and another act was about to begin. 'Hopefully a rock band gets on that stage soon,' she thought as she bobbed her head to the DJ's music.

Having spent most of the day at his grand-uncle’s book booth and planning to spend most of his money on the quill raffle, August wandered around the Festival with a cup of lemonade, looking for a good angle to watch the stage and festivities. Animals...weren’t exactly his cup of tea, but he was convinced to come out at least for a few nights. Maybe he’d run into some classmates and be able to catch up a bit. Maybe he could go find someone who could help explain the laws surrounding regulation of magical creatures to him-- he’d been quite surprised to learn there was an entire level of the Ministry devoted to it. Or maybe he ought to go find his younger cousins--who were probably up to no good.

In a bit. For now, August found a vantage point and did his best to not seem too out of place in his collared shirt and jeans, sipping his drink and appreciating the music.

The girls hadn’t been in front of an actual audience since they were at Hogwarts. Though music club hardly counted as real performing. As Kimberly would say this was the big leagues when it came to their music. Granted their music hadn’t even gotten off the ground. A shame really. To be fair it had taken them a while to figure out a name. Orphan sisters surely didn’t make for the greatest band name.

With the festive kicking off well. The girls cheered for Skylar and Miles performance. They’re friend was pretty good. “We’re up!” Candace said with excitement. Alana at that point looked like she was about to throw up. “Don’t worry Alana you’ll do fine.” Minako told her. “I don’t feel so sure of that.” She answered before willing herself to grab her mic. “Ready?” Minako asked. “Yeah, let’s do this.”

Going out on stage, the girls got into position as they waved to the audience. “Let’s go!” Minako shouted. “You guys ready!” Candace called out to the crowd. “Let’s get this party started!” Kimberly announced. “One, two, three, four…” Alana cued before they began their performance.

ORION HARRISON LANE + Rhea Allison Lane

Squib | Rye Public High School | Seventeen Years Old | Teenage Daredevil | Rugby Team
Halfblood | Unsorted First Year | Eleven Years Old

» Summer 2045 » Stage Area, Magizoology Festival
» Orion's Status: Fulfilling Brotherly Duties
» Rhea's Status: 'Should have been an only child.'

═════════════════════════════════════════════

Rhea had hoped the festival would be an opportunity for the whole family to spend time together, but of course, as a Lane, such a feat seemed impossible. Dad had to work. Mum intended to come, but had a sudden problem at the observatory that kept her over, Uncle Joseph seemed… Completely disinterested, and Jonah, despite living for all things creature and magical, was probably still in Godric’s Hollow pacing in front of the fireplace, talking himself in circles on whether or not he could face Sonora after early Summer mishaps--just as she’d left him hours prior. In Rhea’s opinion? He was being an idiot.

Luckily Orion had agreed to take her, and although she would have preferred to have had the whole Lane clan, she was grateful for a final bit of quality time before she was Hogwarts-bound at the end of the Summer. The duo had thus far managed to spot both sets of their neighbors and Rhea was still flabbergasted that Aidene and Brook kept missing each other at the event. At one point they had been just feet apart! Sure, she could have just told them they were both witches by now, but what was the fun in that? It’s not like either of them had directly asked. She supposed if they didn’t figure it out at the festival, they would have to on the train, and at least they’d get a nice surprise out of it all. For that, Rhea was doing them a favor.

A few hours had been spent just mulling about the fairgrounds and playing games, but the music was the main draw for both siblings. She was too small to properly dance with Orion, so he’d had her stand on his feet while he spun them around and the littlest laughed gleefully. Eventually, the next band had started and Rion decided to head back to the festival.

“Rion, can’t we stay a little longer?” She pleaded, following closely so not to lose him in the crowd.

“We can come back later, I promise.” He called over his shoulder. “I just wanna see if Ves showed up or not.”

“Don’t you have any friends your own age?”

“Muggles, sure.”

“Right, right…”

Sometimes Rhea forgot squibs weren’t exactly smiled upon in the wizarding community.

As she trailed Rion to the back of the crowd a stray glance alerted her to the presence of a familiar face. With her attention elsewhere, she’d ended up walking straight into her brother with an “Oof!”

“What’s wrong?” The teen turned to his sister. She glanced back in the direction that had apparently distracted her, and Rion caught sight of a boy off by himself sipping lemonade. “What, that kid? A friend?” ‘Doesn’t look like he’d be in her grade…’

“That’s, um, that’s Sonora’s cousin.” She explained, her cheeks a rosey red in her embarrassment. “August.”

Rion grinned at the name. “Ohhhh, August, huh?” He’d heard from Jonah that their sister had a little crush on his friend’s cousin, but he certainly hadn’t been expecting such a bookish looking sort. “Well, this is a surprise.” He teased. “I was always expecting a Matt, or a Jason. Something… Sportier.”

His amusement only rose when Rhea scoffed and rolled her eyes at him. “Let’s go talk to him!”

“What? No!” Rion was off, leaving Rhea to chase after him in a huff. “You’re gonna be weird!” Big brothers were the worst!!!

Rhea had no say in the matter. Before she knew it, they had approached August and Rion was making himself perfectly comfortable sitting beside the third year. She sighed in defeat. “Hi, August.” Hi, life of eternal embarrassment. “We just, um, saw you on our way out, and thought we’d come say hi, so…”

“Hi.” Rion echoed with a smirk. “Enjoying the music? Don’t seem much like a S.I.S.T.E.R.S. kind of bloke.”

“Good evening, Miss Lane,” he greeted with a friendly smile at the arrival of one Mermaid Princess of the North Sea. “That was very polite of you, as always.”

The knight accompanying the young princess spoke up with a smirking comment about the music, which August replied with a small shrug. “Not my usual music no,” he admitted. ”But it’s good to be around other things once in a while. Expand horizons, what not,” Something like that. That wasn’t too stuffy, right? He didn't have anything against the elder Lane for the past summer, and he knew he came off as a stick in the mud anyways. Maybe a little, but the poor boy had plenty on his plate yet still managed to make an appearance tonight, escorting his younger sister. Responsible, and adaptable-- respectable. In any case, August kept his internal monologue off his face and introduced himself. ”You must be Orion Lane. I'm August Li, Sonora’s cousin. It’s a pleasure to meet you in person finally. I usually only ever hear your name as the sender of a letter.”

Rhea gave a sharp exhale at being called Ms. Lane. She hated being called that—that was her mother! Or… At least, it was, until she went back to her maiden name. Now Rhea was the only Ms. Lane to speak of, and… She shook her head. The point was, it was too formal for her. She had been about to speak up about it when Rion started talking again.

“Yup. Orion Lane, part-time penpal, at your service. Feeling’s mutual.” He grinned, “It feels like we’ve already met. Rhea talks about you a lot.”

“Orion…” The youngest warned, arms crossed with a look on her face that screamed Delia Chance and ‘you’re in so much trouble.’ It was enough to make Rion flinch. ‘How does she already have that so down pat….?’ He seemed to have gotten the picture and shrugged the look off so as not to alert August. It may have been Rion’s job as the eldest brother to scope out any contenders for his baby sister’s heart, but he wasn’t so cruel as to completely out her little crush. No. If anything, that was Jonah’s job as brother #2. “I was about to head out to find Sonora, actually,” he began, “I told Vespera we’d meet up, so they’re probably together. Is Sonora…?” Rion had wanted to ask how she was doing since he hadn’t seen her around since her visit in June, but bit back the question. “Actually, nevermind. I’ll ask her myself. She’s probably off after those horse flying lessons, right? I’ll head there.”

Orion pushed himself back to his feet and dusted himself off before patting his sister on the head. “I’ll be back, why don’t you two sit and chat for a while?”

Rhea stuttered, startled by Rion’s clear plan. The last thing she wanted was to be a burden! “I-I don’t think—”

Yet again she was cut off. ‘UGH!’ “You don’t mind, right, August?”

He didn’t give the kids much time to respond, as he was gone as quick as he came with only a quick “See ya!” before he disappeared in the crowds. Rhea could hardly believe the nerve, and yet, it wasn’t a surprise at all coming from her oldest brother. At least now that he was gone she could finally relax. “I’m sorry about him.” she sighed as she took Orion’s previous spot beside the older boy, “He’s been really weird lately. Can’t sit still much. Um… Don’t get the wrong idea, you don’t need to stay with me or anything, but… Can I keep you company for a bit? I don’t feel like jumping back in the crowds just yet.”

”O-oh, does she?” August glanced between the siblings, about ask what a lowly scribe like himself could have done to warrant the discussion of a princess. But Princess Rhea rejected the train of thought and August was happy to let the topic go, especially if it was related to last year’s “cute boy” comment. Besides, he could hardly imagine she lacked friends to talk about.

Orion mentioned Sonora but quickly decided against it and August shrugged a little before nodding in confirmation. Then before he could get in a word edgewise, Orion was up and wandering off. Was that irresponsible of him for just leaving his baby sister with a stranger? Or responsible for leaving her with an apparently trustworthy friend?

In any case, Rhea’s apparent reluctance to be left alone with him convinced him she had simply been exasperated and that all the other talk was just Orion being polite. ”Nothing to apologize for, I’m not exactly busy and I’m sure he’s doing his best,” he replied to her meek little comment about hanging out with him. ”Speaking of, I don’t suppose your other brother is around? This hardly seems like the kind of event he would miss.”

He remembered the petulant sound she'd made when he greeted her "Also, did I say something that bothered you earlier?"

“Oh, Jonah’s, um…” She bit her lip as she mulled over just what was okay to tell him. Was it appropriate to tell August her brother was sulking over his cousin? Probably not, but she didn’t exactly care to lie to the boy, either. “He wasn’t sure if he was going to make it or not, so we left him behind a few hours ago. He… Might show up? I hope he does, anyway. You’re right, he pretty well lives for these sorts of things.”

More questions, personal questions. Rhea was surprised, honestly. He hadn’t expected him to pick up on her frustration earlier, let alone ask about it. August seemed relatively quiet and Rhea had only expected to maintain an awkward sort of peace for now without any extra company, but the conversation was certainly more than welcome—especially if it gave her the opportunity to clear some things up and get to know the boy just a little better.

“Oh! It’s nothing, really,” she smiled up at him, “It’s just, would you mind just calling me Rhea? Or Re, or really anything but Miss Lane? It makes me feel like I should call you Mr. Li, but then that just seems much too formal, don’t you think?” Relaxing into the conversation, she’d readjusted to better face him as they spoke. “It is okay if I just call you August, right? Or is there something else you normally go by instead? Jonah just always calls you by your first name, so I haven’t been sure." Not to mention, it was her favorite month. A nice name for a nice boy.

Wasn’t sure he’d make it? A Magizoologist not making it to the Magizoology Festival? With how vague that answer had been, August couldn’t really make any character judgements besides “less than ideal planning or schedule management,” but two years of working with the boy on the Dragon begged to differ. Busy, perhaps. But evidently poor at communicating his plans. ”Indeed,” August replied with a polite expression, keeping his judgments to himself. ”Sona’s been concerned with his brief correspondences and was hoping for more time to talk.”

He shifted in his seat, resting his now-empty lemonade cup on the table and turning so he could face her properly. She asked him to call her by a more casual name because it felt too formal and he acquiesced immediately.

”Of course, Rhea. I apologize for making you uncomfortable,” he replied, adjusting softening his tone to be much more casual even if his word choice hadn’t caught up. ”August is fine, yes. My family and friends used to call me Tan, but most people at Hogwarts call me August.”...or Auggie he added silently. Nope, that was a Lizzie thing and probably too informal, wasn’t it?

”How’re you feeling about starting at Hogwarts?” A ghost of a smirk flitted across his face as he finally remembered the last--or rather, first-- part of Rhea’s title. ”Any plans to continue your career as Prima Ballerina Mermaid Princess of the North Sea from shore?”

Summer 2045 Fantastic Beasts Festival With: August

═══════════════════XXXX═══════════════════

Rhea positively lit up when August called her by her name, so much so that if they were living in one of her otome games, she would be radiating sparkles. He gave her the official ok to call him by his name as well, and this suited her just fine. Sure, nicknames were fun, but the only nickname she could have possibly thought of for August was “Auggie”, and… Auggie seemed strange. Just August for now.

She was quick to spot the ghost of a smile from August and immediately decided she liked it. ‘I wonder how hard it would be to get a real smile..?’ She thought to herself before the question hit her like a ton of bricks. Hogwarts. That’s right, they were only days away from Rhea’s first trip on the Hogwarts Express and a new life learning about magic. If she were to be honest? She was dreading it! She didn’t want to be a witch—she never did—and now that she was one, her magic had managed to cause her nothing but grief. She’d gotten suspended, her friends in Rye left her when she’d told them she’d be going away to boarding school, and her parents began fighting, eventually split up… That was all her fault, as far as she was concerned. No amount of comfort from Orion had managed to convince her otherwise. She wished she could have just given her magic away to her eldest brother; obviously he had always wanted the life that Rhea wanted so badly to reject, yet… Sadly that was impossible. God sure had a funny way of making things work. She was going to be a terrible witch—she’d practically wrecked the shop when she’d gotten her wand! The upcoming months were an impending disaster.

She couldn’t just vent all of that at him, could she? ‘No, that’d…. Probably freak him out. Better not.’

August mentioned her unofficial title and she giggled at the inside joke, knowing full well she would never live it down. It was a welcome break from her anxious thoughts. “Best case scenario, I’ll figure out how to take my reign to the sea while I’m there.” The brunette noticed a change in the song and took it as her opportunity to evade any further talk about school. She hopped off of her seat and bounced over to August, taking him by the hand with a bright smile. “Hey, you’re done with your drink, right? Dance with me.”

August had glanced away for a moment as the song changed and when it turned back, it looked like the young mermaid was contemplating something-- he hadn’t asked too strange a question, had he? ”No plans in place already?” he asked, teasing a little. ”There is a lake of mermaids if that would amuse you? They’re...not exactly the Disney kind though.”

It didn’t escape notice that she hadn’t answered what he’d thought was the easier question about being excited. Oh of course. Given her kind heart, the little girl was probably worried enough about leaving Orion at home alone after everything this summer. There was little he could do for Orion from Hogwarts, but he did resolve to invite her to a study session or in the beginning of the term. August had zero doubts Rhea would quickly find a bunch of good friends, and as long as they had time to study, then at least she wouldn’t fall behind in classes.

He had been about to take on his best “be-excited” Quidditch announcer tone in an attempt to hype up the upcoming school year when Rhea bounced up and tugged him on his feet.

“Dance with me.”

Oh no. No no no no. He pulled back gently, looking for a polite way to disentangle himself. ”That’s okay. How about I just watch? There was an archery contest earlier? Or we can go visit a magical creature? Have you ever seen an augurey? Or a-- ” he asked.

Evidently that was not an option and August felt duty-bound not to just pull away and walk off. As Rhea dragged him out onto the dance floor, he imagined his impending utter embarrassment. They were on the dance floor now. With other bodies around, there was no easy escape without being rude or drawing extra attention to them. He decided the best idea might be to just play this off as a learning opportunity, or entertaining a small child.

”I umm...don’t dance,” he admitted quietly to Rhea.
