A sweet little shining gold butterfly flutters slowly into Trager's home. It hesitates, waiting for the angel named Trager to fall asleep. As she drifts off, the butterfly bobs and flits and disappears into Trager's sleeping conscience.
A big yawn and satisfying stretch are perfect for a productive day. The room where Trager slept was humble. The walls were decorated with medals of honor and pictures of herself in uniform. There were also a few large photos of her with a handsome young angel holding her in sweet, soft, romantic postures. Her fiance.
A groan came from beside the pae in her bed. She glanced over her shoulder and saw the love of her life open his eyes and watch her adoringly. "Good morning, Puddin',"
"Stop, I don't like it when you call me that!" She reacts playfully and reaches for a tickle.
A montage slowly picked up and she could hear horns and saw marching and pae walk by. Each pae had a face the same as all the pae she knows in the waking world. She didn't recognize them in her dream. A soldier that had her son's face saluted Trager as she moved across the base. She gave a nod and picked up the pace.
A square table was arranged in a square room with a window on 3 walls. Three chairs on each side. Four of the seats were occupied by 4 of the 12 generals. "It's good to see you again, Lili. How's it been in on the other side?"
"Tough. There's another that fights me and threatens to extinguish my troops if we don't retreat. How about you Maddy, any news from General Strafe yet?"
"Don't call me that! You know I hate it. No word from him yet, but I've heard murmurs among some of the soldiers that he's been workin' em too hard. I wonder why he called this meeting, and where are the others?"
The door burst open, standing in all his crimson, decorated glory, General Strafe held an agent of the enemy by the arm. She kicked and cried and tried to bite, but he only smiled at her.
"Speak of the devil."
The man tossed a nearly dried out naiad to the floor. "Get up, have a seat," he spoke in an informal manner, his voice calm and eerily cheery. "They're much more comfortable than the floor."
Another General rose, demanding to know what's going on.
"Look who I found hiding out in a river on the border of O'Cuil and Telrunya. She claims she's not a spy."
"Please, let me live. I can help you. Just don't hurt me!"
Strafe grinned.
Madaesos [Trager] stood up, a sense that she wasn't quite herself overwhelmed the angel. "This is our Ace in the hole then!"
"Please, don't hurt me."
Strafe sat down and wove his fingers together on the table. "What do you have to offer?"
"Anything! Just let me go."
"I want information. I want that precious book your leaders claim to have hidden." he still maintained a scary level of decorum. "I want them dead."
The other generals gasp and the captive inhaled sharply, holding her breath. She seemed to be considering it. Madeasos (Trager) protested. "Isn't that going too far?"
"It's the only way. You know we can't get through their defenses otherwise. Those five beasts are key." Strafe stood and in the center of the table now there was a map of a vast land mass. Telrunya on one half of it and O'Cuil on the other. Little carved army pae stood in various positions, with the angels and demons mostly lined up along the border. Positioned in star formation, were the enemy beast's leaders.
Madeasos (Trager) agreed. He looked to the water beast. "How does their defense work?"
"The Five, they work together. If one is lost, it breaks the connection."
Strafe grinned.
"Who is the weakest link. Where are the holes in their defenses?" Liliana asked.
"Water."
"Impossible, no one can reach the depths, and their fighters and fliers won't let us near the waterways. How is water weakest?"
"The Queen. She does not take the threat of war serious. Without her, the connection is lost."
Strafe grinned.
"There's no way..."
"There is one." Strafe said. He touched each finger together, fidgeting. "I will spare your life. If you kill the Queen of the Water."
The captive gasp. "But, I can't! I'm the Oracle sworn loyalty to the Water!"
"How lucky we are to find someone so close to the queen. You want to live, yes?" Strafe grinned.
She started sobbing, but it didn't last long. She let down her charade and stared Strafe straight in the eyes. "I want to be the new queen. I want my own followers and subjects. My own queendom. I will kill my queen. It will open the waters, they will be vulnerable. They will not be expecting an attack nor have their magic to aid."
Strafe grinned.
"But how?" Maedosos (Trager) asked.
Strafe grinned but spoke up this time. "I know how."
