xxxX What Are Vampires?xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

spaceFrom the Harry Potter Wiki: "A vampire is a magical humanoid that is famed for biting people on the neck and sucking their blood. They are part of the family of beings known as the Living Dead."

spaceNot much information is provided in-canon regarding vampires, so we have had to take some liberties and fill in some blanks. Sources include other popular depictions of vampires in media. As our version of vampires are already well-established in-guild, any contradictory information released by official sources must be discredited in the interest of maintaining the continuity of the roleplay.

Physical Traits:
- Pale-skinned due to lack of sunlight.
- Typically gaunt due to lack of solid foods in their diet.
- Vampires do not age physically. They are believed to be immortal, though the fact of this obviously cannot be proven. While they can be killed, or choose to die, if left alone they will continue to live for an as of yet undetermined length of time. This is as of yet unknown, as many vampires eventually grow bored with their lives and choose to die, or are killed by various means.

Diet:
- Survive by drinking blood.
- Can supplement diet and take the edge off of cravings by consuming blood-infused treats such as Blood Pops.
- Can drink bagged blood, though most prefer taking directly from the source.
- Can consume human food, however this causes extreme discomfort. The heavier the meal, the more difficult it is for the vampire to handle it. Some discomfort can be alleviated if the food is infused with blood.
- Contrary to popular belief, vampires are not hunger-fueled monsters. Most of the time, they are more or less perfectly normal, provided they have eaten a proper meal. However, if they go too long without eating, or are injured in a way that causes severe blood loss, their natural instinct to hunt and feed will consume them until they have sated it.

Abilities:
- Vampires possess heightened strength and speed, sometimes being as much as ten times stronger and faster than they were as a human.
- Vampires have heightened senses, and as such are vulnerable to bright lights, strong smells, and loud noises. This sensitivity is the reason for their aversion to garlic. They also tend to be extremely sensitive to touch, though their natural strength grants them high pain tolerance.
- Vampires are extremely difficult to kill, and have a natural immunity or resistance to most spells. The Killing Curse does not work on them, as they are technically already dead. Their resistance to magic makes most spells useless against them.
- Sometime between the five-and-ten year mark after being turned, a fledgling vampire will reach maturity, an event hallmarked by the manifestation of a special power. Upon receiving this power, a vampire is no longer considered a fledgling. Most traditional vampire clans will assign the vampire a new name at this time, often based on their power.

Turning Humans:
- In order to be turned, a human must sustain significant blood loss, and then be fed the blood of a vampire.
- The process of being turned is excruciatingly painful. A vampire's bite itself causes great pain, only marginally better than the process of the body dying and being reanimated by the blood. It is not uncommon for humans to injure themselves mid-turn.
- Newly turned vampires must be fed in the immediate, as no matter how much vampire blood they consume, they will require human blood to feed.
- Simply giving a human vampire blood will not turn them; the amount of vampire blood a human drinks must be greater than amount of human blood in the body.
- Sharing blood with a human without turning them will forge a temporary connection between the vampire and the human. The vampire will share part of its strength with the human for a period of time. For the duration of the connection, the vampire will be attuned to the human's physical state. This will fade with time as the human's body wastes the blood the vampire gave them.

Weaknesses:
- While they can be awake during the day, vampires are extremely lethargic when the sun is up. The younger a vampire is, the harder time they have staying awake, with it being all but impossible for new turns (the only circumstance in which they may remain awake is a life-or-death situation, in which their natural survival instinct takes over). As a vampire grows older, they will find themselves naturally waking earlier in the evening, and falling asleep later in the morning. Forcing one's self to remain awake will result in bleeding from the eyes, ears, and nose.
- Methods for killing a vampire* are numerous, but difficult. They include:
xxx- Beheading
xxx- Extended exposure to sunlight
xxx- Fire, though the body must be destroyed completely
- Staking a vampire will not kill it; however, it does drain the body of blood and leave the vampire vulnerable to being killed through other means.

* Please remember if you are planning on killing a vampire that guild rules require both a plot request and permission from the vampire's player to do so.

xxxX Vampire Historyxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
** Note: Due to the absence of the original plot-runners and some inconsistency/lack of planning on their parts, some information has been slightly altered to suit the current guild canon.

spaceNot much is known about the origins of vampires. There are many myths, of course, but it's hard to say now what is true and what has been altered or remembered incorrectly. Most stories trace the existence of vampires back to a woman known as Lilith, who is called the Mother of Vampires. Little is known about her, though many over the years have laid claim to the identity. It's unknown if any of these beings are the true Lilith, or where she may be if they are not.

spaceAt first, vampires more or less kept to themselves, serving and remaining with their clan, spread out around the world. But as time went on, and their numbers increased, it became apparent that, for the safety of their kind, there would have to be some rules laid in place. The oldest vampires came together and formed The Council, a body of ancient vampires who would oversee and govern the rest of the vampire population. Vampire politics remained largely outside the notice of wizard and muggle-kind, feared by both and believed myth by one. As members of The Council grew weary of their existence, they would pass the mantle on to one of their own fledglings, and so on and so forth.

spaceIn the early 1900's, a woman known as Lilith (though whether she was or was not the True Lilith remains unknown) was taken by a group known as The Family. This group, intent on destroying vampires, began creating potions made from the blood of magical creatures to use against vampires. They remained at large for nearly two hundred years, successfully taking down many vampires in their time, including prominent members of The Council. By the time they were defeated in the year 2020, The Council's numbers had been heavily decimated. Prominent vampires in the United Kingdom, site of the final battle with The Family, returned to Council Headquarters in Italy to see about reorganizing and rebuilding.

spaceDuring this time of confusion and with the lack of coverage from The Council, another group of vampires, The Shadowsong Clan, saw an opportunity. Their clan leader decided to form his own, new council, to usurp the current leaders, unsatisfied with their laws and control. The clan at large declared itself the Shadowsong Council, and split into several clans, the leader of each serving as a member of the newly-formed council. However, due to in-fighting among its members, it struggled to gain any traction, and largely operated more or less as rogues against the established council.

spaceAs the Shadowsong Council struggled to establish a foothold in the United Kingdom, members of The Council began to vanish without a trace. Some were known to be dead, their demises felt by their clan members. The responsible parties seemed to be on the move, with new cases of missing or dead vampires popping up across the continent. Agents of The Council were sent out across Europe to investigate.

spaceOne such agent, Firmin "Lore" Deadman, was dispatched to the UK to look into the possible involvement of the Shadowsong Council. His investigations brought him to the door of Sasha "Harbinger" Dobrev, heir to Shadowsong and head of the Augurey Clan. Interrogation of Harbinger revealed that not only was Shadowsong not involved, they too had members who had vanished without a trace. Determining that the Shadowsong Countil was too disorganized to be any real threat, he elected to focus on continuing to question the various vampire clans of the area to try and figure out a pattern or turn up a lead.

spaceEventually, Lore's investigations turned up evidence that the missing vampires were being murdered by a group of human vampire hunters, a conclusion that was initially rejected on the grounds that humans couldn't possibly manage such a feat. However, the evidence continued to pile up, with no explanation as to how exactly they were pulling it off but overwhelming proof that, somehow, they were. Lore enlisted the help of the willing local vampires to put a stop to the humans, and began to hunt them in earnest. More vampires were lost as they attempted to locate the home base of the hunters.

xxxX How to Become a Vampirexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

spaceInterested in playing a vampire in guild? Look no further! Here are the instructions on how to get a vampire character!

spaceNew vampire characters cannot simply be made. This is in order to keep track of the current vampire population, and to keep the vampire politics from getting too confusing. All new vampires must be previously-established characters who get turned by one of the current vampire clan heads. Current heads include:
xx- Firmin "Lore" Deadman - Nox Clan (Diamond Wales)
xx- Zane "Phantom" Acacia - Strikers Clan (a porg)
xx- Christopher "Jedi" Whitethorne - Dragon Clan (Diamond Wales)
xx- Sasha "Harbinger" Dobrev - Augurey Clan [Shadowsong Council] (Cara MiaKitty)
xx- Orion "Pestlience" Gray - Di Inferi Clan [Shadowsong Council] (Essy ze Ninja)

The Process:
- Do a little research! Figure out which clan you think your character would fit in best. But, always be sure to have a backup, just in case that clan is not accepting new members.
- Each vampire clan should have a clan thread in the Vampire Clans subforum. There, you should be able to find a form to fill out in order to request your character be turned.
- Work with the clan leader's player in order to come up with a plot to get your character turned. Once you have an idea established, make sure that the moderator currently in charge of Vampire Clans is aware that you've both agreed on this.
- Submit an official plot request for whatever plan you and your new clan leader have come up with to turn your character.
- Submit an MTA request for your new vampire character.
- Once the plot request and MTA have been approved, you can start the plot to turn your character!

xxxX Information on Half-Vampiresxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

spaceIt is established in Harry Potter canon that half-vampires do indeed exist! However, just like with the vampires themselves, this is not explored in canon beyond an offhand mention of a half-vampire musician. So, once again we've filled in the blanks as best we can.

Attributes:
- Typically pale, with extreme sensitivity to the sun. Must use special protection to prevent severe sunburn if exposed for extended periods of time.
- While not as sensitive as a full-blooded vampire, half-vampires still have some heightened senses. They have a strong sensitivity to bright lights, loud noises, and strong smells.
- Half-vampires age normally from birth until they reach maturity. However, once they exit puberty, their aging process slows considerably. The lifespan of a half-vampire is roughly double that of a normal person.
- Half-vampires must eat like a human, though their intake of human food can be reduced if they choose to consume blood as well.
- Half-vampires do not require blood to survive, but generally speaking will choose to consume it, due to their vampire nature making it appealing and the general convenience of it being on-hand, assuming they are being raised around vampire relatives.
- Half-vampires can offset hunger cravings both for blood or human food with blood-infused treats such as Blood Pops.
- Half-vampires are automatically considered members of the clan they are born into.
- It is impossible for a biologically-female vampire to conceive, carry, and birth a half-vampire. All half-vampires are the child of a biologically-male vampire and a human woman.

spaceAs with vampires, new half-vampires cannot simply be made in-guild. Rather, they must be fathered by an established vampire. In order to play a half-vampire, you'll need to find a current vampire character who can father your child, and will need to submit an MTA request and a plot request.
