Domino may come off as morose or brooding. He rarely speaks around others and he has a pointed tendency to avoid eye contact whenever possible, preferring to keep his eyes trained on his shoes practically at all times. Combine these mannerisms with his impressive height and his seemingly dismissive slouching about, and it’s almost understandable why some might find Dom a little intimidating. Nothing could be further from the truth. Domino’s introverted nature has less to do with a dour attitude and more to do with the fact that he’s pitifully skittish and nervous around others. The second he opens his mouth the truth is generally revealed: around strangers Domino is usually a stammering mess, and even among trusted friends he has difficulty having a conversation or maintaining eye contact. So, he avoids it. At all costs. He’s almost painfully demure, and his awareness of the fact only makes him more self-conscious. It’s like he’s embarrassed to exist -- that he feels the need to
apologize for it. Domino can’t help but feel like a burden.
This obviously colors his interactions with others. It’s difficult for Domino to interact with the people around him as he just assumes they’ll hate him, that they’ll think he’s ridiculous, that they’ll have no patience for his insecurities. Unfortunately, past relationships have pretty much confirmed his suspicions. Rather than confront these issues Dom chooses to retreat inwards, insulating himself from the outside world by not engaging with it meaningfully; his history of substance abuse is a symptom of this. He often gets lost in his own thoughts. There’s almost a dreaminess to Domino, as if he’s constantly imagining himself somewhere else. Usually he is.
Around the people with whom he feels a measure of trust, Dom is generally a soft-spoken and polite young man. He’s unfailingly sweet and loyal to those he considers friends. He’s
grateful, honestly. Domino is so desperate for some scrap of approval that he’ll pretty much put up with anything from anyone willing to give him the time of day. It’s not in his nature to make waves. He would rather literally implode than argue. To put it frankly, Domino is a complete and utter doormat, and it wouldn’t be difficult for someone to take advantage of his kindness. It doesn’t help that Domino is a touch simple -- not
dumb but certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed. He’ll pretty much believe anything said with conviction because it’s much easier than having to actually think for himself.
In his free time Domino can usually be found off alone somewhere, doodling in his sketchbook.
Shuck and Domino are actually quite alike in some ways. He’s quiet and introverted as well, and the two rarely speak unless it’s necessary. That isn’t to say their relationship isn’t warm -- quite the contrary, in fact. They just have a mutual understanding that neither of them is particularly talkative. Shuck is patient and deliberate, which makes him a useful ally in combat as he is both calm and perceptive. He is fiercely protective, particularly of Dom. Shuck has a great deal of gruff fondness for his Hunter.
Why did your human character choose to become a Hunter?Domino, having recently survived an “accidental” OD of injected heroin, finds himself clean and placed in a halfway home to monitor his sobriety. Dom’s only real family, his mother, passed away around two years back from a ruptured aneurysm. Dropped dead right in the middle of the kitchen. He’d never really recovered. The closest thing he has now is a social worker.
Domino manages to find work at a bookstore owned by a kindly and sympathetic elderly couple. Interacting with them and the occasional customer is the extent of his social life, as Dom keeps himself separated from the other recovering addicts at the home. When not at work Domino mostly remains in his room, doodling in his sketchbook, trying hard not to think about the future. It’s too bleak.
Work is slow. Domino quietly chews on a ham and cheese sandwich as the first customer of the afternoon strolls in. It’s a face he does not recognize. The bookstore has its fair share of regulars and Dom’s worked there long enough to know them by name, but he doesn’t know this person. He tries not to stare as they explore the shop. Eventually, they pluck a worn tome off the shelves; it literally rattles Domino’s desk as the stranger drops it down with a solid
thunk.
“Ever think about those shadows you see?” he asks.
Dom doesn’t do much talking. He listens in stunned silence as the stranger explains to him about an island, about others like him, about a grand purpose. Truthfully, Domino doesn’t know what to make of it. He doesn’t understand. None of it sounds real.
But the stranger is right: Domino does see things. Inexplicable things, things that fill him with a cold dread -- even if he can’t explain it. He’s never questioned it. It simply Is.
The stranger offers Domino answers. He offers him a life outside the mundane. Domino isn’t sure. Mundane is all he’s ever experienced, and he’s pitifully afraid of the unknown.
Yet Domino accepts the offer, because there’s nothing for him here, except a future he doesn’t feel capable of confronting. And that’s that.
Weapon Ability The Chill: The glowing runes on Shuck brighten slightly as Dom uses his charge. During this ability, Dom can use his weapon to touch an injury, enveloping it in a cleansing fire that doesn’t burn or harm. After the flames disappear the wound is slightly mended.
Physical Description: Eye Colour: Light blue
Hair Colour/Style: Dark brown, not particularly styled. Just messy/shaggy.
Skin Colour: Lightly tan, spray of freckles on the nose/cheeks, as well as some on the tops of his shoulders and arms.
Clothing Style/Colours: Anything loose-fitting and comfortable, generally: jeans, hoodies, T-shirts, flannel overshirts, ratty sneakers or converses, etc. He tends to cover up a lot, a lingering habit from when he had a need to hide the needle marks on his arm. Dom mostly sticks to cool tones, primarily grays and blues, although he has a fondness for brick red that occasionally sneaks into his wardrobe.
