Mrs. Heulwen confirmed what he had originally thought that the school was free to attend, which meant his parents couldn't hold that over him anymore. She had opened the door for him and Declan stepped inside, then stopped in the doorway, absolutely floored by the amount of books they had. "Wow," he said quietly to himself. Then he took a couple more steps into the shop and touched the spine of a book on display. "All these books are about magic?" he asked, turning to look up at Mrs. Heulwen. His blue eyes sparkled with excitement, looking all around at the vast knowledge of magical texts he wanted to consume. A new sense of excitement coursed through him. There was no way this could be devilry, like his father said. This was freedom, this was happiness, this was home! One of his favorite smells, biblichor, was wafting by, and the coziness of the bookstore all combined to give Declan a sense of calm and relaxation. This was definitely his favorite place this far.

Nora grinned softly when Declan was wowed by the large selection of books within the shop. She followed as he walked in, before he asked about the books being magical. "While most of them are magical, this shop also has a nice selection of muggle texts." Wait. She had a new term to explain here. "Muggle meaning 'non-magical'. You'll hear it often around the magical world. The States wizards call them 'no-maj', which I personally think sounds a kip nicer. There are also 'Squibs', which are non-magical children born to magical families. This would be like your grandfather. There are also muggleborns, like myself; half-bloods, which are of both magical and muggle descent; and purebloods, which as the name implies, are from magical-only families. Hogwarts has all sorts of different magical students, as well as staff. Some of the staff are also magical creatures or half-breeds, which are half human, half magical creature. One of your teachers in first year is a Wood Nymph."
Normally, she wouldn't mention the statuses of any of the other students or staff, but Azalea was more than happy to let everyone know. "Admittedly, Professor Azalea is perfect for the job, as she'll be your Herbology Professor. She'll teach all about magical plants, including how to care for them and their uses." She handed over a copy of 'One Thousand Magical Herbs & Fungi' over to Declan. Having done this job so many years, Nora knew the exact location of each of the school textbooks for the first years. It was seldom she needed to shop with older students, but she was pretty confident she could find just about any textbook here. She subtly guided the boy by walking toward the sections, hoping he felt comfortable enough to ask any questions he felt necessary.

Declan listened to Nora's explanation of the different blood statuses as well as her description of the Herbology professor, which was something Declan had just learned about as well. Her description of the teacher only made him even more excited regarding the school. And a class all about plants got Declan excited. Truthfully, he loved plants, but he was not allowed to garden because that was only something women and pensioners did and he was neither, so his parents had forbid it. But now he was get to attend an entire class regarding plants. He was practically shaking with excitement. The other classes sounded exciting as well. He got his books for Astronomy, Charms, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. He stopped when he got to Defense Against the Dark Arts. "D...dark arts, ma'am? That sounds scary," he said a little shakily. Magic could be evil? Well, according to his parents and the church, all magic was evil, but this literally said 'Defense Against the Dark Arts' which implied Dark Arts existed to begin with. Everything about this world so far was alluring to him, but he was worried that there was something he was missing. Were these dark arts that prevalent that the students needed to learn how to protect themselves from it? And she had said that mythical creatures like dragons and unicorns were real, did that also mean scary things like vampires and werewolves were as well? He was suddenly starting to worry a little bit.

Soft green eyes watched as the boy reviewed over his list. He stopped at Defense class, looking a bit rattled. "It can be, yes. But luckily, you'll be well trained to protect yourself and others. And the class isn't wholly about dark arts. You do learn a lot of useful tools there. You'll learn the illumination spell, and the counterpart, all about some of our magical creatures, and so much more. I promise, you'll be perfectly safe there." She wanted to continue on, saying how there was darkness and evil all around, but she felt that would likely rattle the boy further.
"You'll have Astronomy, learning of the stars and planets; Charms will teach you a variety of useful magics; History of Magic is the best place to learn all about our wizarding world; Potions will teach you everything to do with brewing; and Transfiguration is all about turning one thing into another. All are useful and wonderful classes. Then when you reach your third year, you can take any number of electives, depending on what you want to learn. And I just know you'll be wonderful, Declan McNamara." She sent him a small smile, hoping her words helped reassure the boy that he'd be in no danger at all during classes.

The explanation of what the class was about didn't do much to alleviate his fear of the dark arts mention, but he nodded and accepted her answer. As long as these scary dark arts weren't common, then he felt a little better. She further explained the classes, which helped Declan to know what Transfiguration was, since that was something he was also curious about. Grabbing the last book from the shelf, he nodded to her and said, "Okay ma'am, I have all the books we need." He smiled, excited to be going to this magical school. He was a little sad that he couldn't get any other books because they had such a nice selection of fantasy books as well. But he assumed the school had a library and that they'd have books there as well and he would definitely take advantage of that. After depositing his books on the counter, Declan took his letter from his pocket and looked it over again. "C...can we go check out the potion stuff next?" he asked, his big blue eyes starry at the chance for a new experience.
