Life Hacks for Gaia

Do you know that voting in the Runway will help you in Lake Kindred? Did you know you can get 10 extra slots in the marketplace? Did you know you can shorten forum links (without using a third party site)?

Here you'll find a random smattering of tips and tricks that are useful to know as you embark on your Gaia journey. Hopefully it will help you situate faster into this site.

This thread will not go in depth on each topic. This is not a list of guides. There's already a handy dandy Index for that.

If you've been on Gaia a while, you likely already know all this stuff. ;3 I'm still in the process of adding info. If there's anything you think would be helpful here, please let me know!

Thread information is up to date as of December 18, 2017.

Start these habits

Daily Activities

These are some actions you can make each day that are a quick way to earn some gold and/or items

Collect the stamps
When you log in, you're greeted by a stamp card pop up. Collect the stamp to earn a little bit of platinum each day. Log in everyday and collect a stamp each day and you'll get a rig on the 7th day. The progress resets every Monday.
(prizes to be added)
If you accidentally click out of this card before collecting your stamp, you can prompt it again. On the My Gaia page, scroll down and you'll see a "Claim Daily Gift" button.

Spinami
Spinami is found under the Catch tab. Use your one free spin to get one free, random, item per day.
Just do the one free spin. For 150 Gaia Cash ($1.50 USD), you can get three items. However, these items are bound to drop in value and won't be worth the 150gc. It does give you 3 slots, instead of one, in hopes of hitting that inner wheel... but chances are low.
Pro-tip: You can see a list of the overall item pool in the Spinami - An Item List thread

Dumpster Dive
You can get free items from Dumpster Dive. These items are donated by other users, so you'll find a wide variety. You may click the link once every five minutes.
Pro-tip: Your Guide to Dumpster Dive

Runway
The Runway is a feature where you can enter your avatar into daily themed contests. You don't have to enter contests in order to take advantage of this feature. Vote! You get a "Daily Reward" bonus for the first vote you make each day. If you vote for eight days in a row, you get a Special Prize. Do not miss any days!
Currently, the special prize is: User Image
This item contains a kin for Lake Kindred, plus a pack of 10 potions that will raise your kin's level. Those potions are a rare drop in-game, so it's a real boost to get you started in Lake Kindred.
Keep voting! You will get another prize every 8 days. It's not a one time thing.

Daily Chance
The Daily Chance cart is that red cart that you see on Gaia's main landing pages. The cart turns yellow if you've logged in for 6 of the past 7 days and you get a chance at better rewards. You may click each cart once per day.
You have the chance to get items or gold. You can be granted amounts like ***100,000 gold or 1,000,000 gold.***** That can buy a lot of gold shop items. There's also a good chance of finding charms (Heart, Star, Diamond) for the GOFusion feature.
Pro Tips: Consider using Better Gaia add-on/extension for your browser. It allows you to collect your Daily Chance carts all from one page, among many other useful features.
This thread lists all the Daily Chance carts in link form (listed as Daily Candy). It even includes the one you normally collect through the mobile app.

Gaia Cash Tree

Use the Gaia Cash Tree. Gaia has two currencies: Gold and Cash. Cash is a premium currency that's usually obtained through spending real-life money. The Cash Tree allows you to collect some Cash for free. You can survive on this site without using Gaia Cash, but it doesn't hurt to have some.

"Watch Videos" is the easiest way to earn free Gaia cash. You can earn ~5gc per video. The availability seems to fluctuate throughout the day. Check it randomly.
"Complete Offers" has a variety of options to choose from. You can often get 100gc quickly with this method. Beware of offers that ask for personal info and credit card information.

New to Gaia? These are Gaia activities that you won't do daily, but are still beneficial to do.

Achievements
Gaia has Achievements. Collecting achievements is a good way to explore the site. The points are worthless but there are users who rabidly collect them. Many achievements are only available during events. Achievements are how users get the little titles to place underneath their avatars.
Further info: Check out Achievement Central for info and FAQs. Use their Achievement Museum thread for info on specific achievements and how to earn them.
A lot of the achievements can be completed in the Achievements Forum. If you want to collect the achievements for getting lots of posts and votes and such, wait for when Gaia holds a site-wide forum event. Keep your eyes peeled and you'll see how some users complete those achievements in the event forums.

Item Grant Links
Click the Item Grants links in the Grant Item Archive to get some item freebies.
Those are items that are specially granted when you click those specific links. Some links expire quickly and others hang around for a few months. That thread keeps a list of links that still work.
Pro-tip: Subscribe to that thread so that you'll know when a new item grant link has been released.

NSTG Tips

New to the guild? The following are some activities that are specific to this guild. All of this info is found in the main (Welcome) forum of this guild, but I'm listing it here just in case you happen to be reading this before you got a chance to scope out the threads in that forum.

The NSTG Charity Raffle (monthly -- until you win)
This raffle is open to all guild members, no matter how long you've been on Gaia. Make sure you've made 20 posts in within this guild (all over the guild, not in that thread). You may only win this charity raffle once per year. Enter the raffle until you win.

NSTG Activity Raffle (monthly)
Get entered into a monthly raffle for posting in this guild! Be sure to enter each month and get your posts in. Every 20 posts = 1 raffle ticket.

Chance at items
Check out the Charities, Contests and Games subforum. There are always Gaians wanting to give away items. And as you post around the guild, you might be visited by the NSTG Fairy.

NSTG Events
The NSTG is always holding events, especially around the holidays. The guild even holds mini games on the off months. Read the guild announcements to know what's going on.

Game Tips

Gaia has several games to play. Some of which make you a bit more gold than others. This post will give tips on which games are possibly more lucrative than others.

Lake Kindred
Lake Kindred is like a very simple version of Pokemon. You battle your kindred (your pet) against other kindred. (Kindred is often shortened to kin.) The goal is to raise your kin's level and your level and to earn rewards along the way. And do other things like: collecting kin, helping gather info on new kin or new areas (when they get released), splicing kin, etc.
Basically, you'll want to play at Fafnir's Peak, Zen Temple or Bunny Planet for a chance at earning RIGs/CIs as your reward for defeating kin. Eventually, you'll want to save up for a "tree killing kin" so that you can earn even more gold.
This info will all make sense after you check out some handy dandy guides: A List of Lake Kindred Guides
Here's another guide that focuses on the basics of how to earn gold from LK: Gold Galore: A LK Guide on Grinding
Pro-tip: There's also a mobile version of this game: www.gaiaonline.com/pets/lite. You can use that version on desktop too to reduce any lag you might be experiencing.
Pro-tip: When killing Sycamorte trees, be sure to be on the gold system (not platinum). Change it in settings. The payout is much higher on the gold system.

Booty Grab
Booty Grab is a game where you collect gold that rains from the sky. Whatever you catch, you keep. And when it rains, it pours.
Sounds fun? This game is played in the forums by clicking on the aquarium tanks in people's signatures. ...But only at times when those tanks are "glowing."
Check out this guide for all the details: A New Booty Grab Guide

Signature Tips

These are tips pertaining to your signature. Signatures are the little blurbs that appear under people's posts.
You can edit it by going to My Gaia > Account [The gear symbol in the menu just below the main header tabs] > Signature

Code Tags -- Those gray boxes
There's a fad right now where Gaians are using the code tags to make their signatures look hip. This is often used in conjunction with an image. Code tags create gray boxes that help separate text. Click the spoiler below for an example. An example of how to format the coding is also included. (Please excuse the weird example! XD; I happened to take the lazy route and use what I already had as my signature instead of creating an example for this.)
        User Image

        [imgleft]URLofYourImage[/imgleft]
        [code] Your text here.

        More text here.
[code] You can even throw in another gray bar with another header or topic.
More text here. Or not. It's up to you. You get the idea.

Basically, use any number of code tag statements or non-code-tag statements you want. If you want an image to be beside your text, be sure to use [imgleft] [/imgleft] or [imgright] [/imgright] tags.

In the above image, did you notice that the text in the first code box is blue? Normally, that shouldn't be possible. Code boxes are used so that BBCode doesn't function. Here's the code for the workaround. You don't have to use the [b][/b] tags, but I found that it iss easier to read when I add them.

        [b][url=URLofYourLink][code]Your Text Here.
        [/url][/b]
Or, the actual code I used:
        [b][url=http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/t.99116991/][code] I'm participating in the 14th annual Gaian-Sponsored Nudity Event.[/url][/b]

Downside, this code DOES NOT work in guilds. It only works out in the forums. In guilds, your signature will look like this:
        User Image

Marketplace Tips

Extra Selling Slots
You may or may not have noticed that some users have more slots in their marketplace stores to sell items. Want 10 more slots too? You earn them by collecting the Tycoon Achievement. You have to complete a series of actions:
Member ➔ Statustician ➔ Consumer ➔ Market Browser ➔ Junior Trader, Trader ➔ Wall Street ➔ Profitable, Entrepreneur ➔ Money Never Sleeps ➔ Tycoon

In short, this will require you to:

Register your account. ➔ Update your status. ➔ Buy an item from a Gold Shop. ➔ Search for an item on the MP. ➔ List an item on the MP and have it sell. ➔ Sell more than 10,000 gold worth of items on the MP. ➔ Sell an item for 2% more than the ABP. ➔ Sell more than 1,000,000 gold worth of items on the MP.

The instructions above were taken from I ❤ Achievements. Please view that thread for any more questions you might have about achievements.

Search Term Suggestions
You're set If you know the name of the item for which you're searching. Most items can be located by searching the item name.

But, what do you do if you don't know an item name? Or if you're doing a general search? Many items also have generic tags.

Some examples of tags that reveal items of a certain type:
premiumcs - Items sold directly in the Cash Shop
premiumci - Items that spawned from RIGs/CIs (Chance Items).
        premiummc - Monthly Collectibles
premiumei - Evolving Items (EIs) and Rapid Evolving Items (REIs)
        astra - Animated Items

You can also generically search for different kinds of items.
To find eyes, try words like: eyes, contacts
To find faces, try words like: eyes, face, mouth, lips
To find mouths try: mouth, lips, smile
        To find noses: nose
To find hair: hair, wig, bangs, extension
To find arms: arms, mod, armmod, gloves, hands
To find legs: legs, leg, mod, legmod
To find other extras: beard, mustache, scar, glasses, blush, makeup, eyeshadow, brow, ears, ring, earrings, skirt, shirt, boots, tail, etc

If you like a specific color (or color scheme), add the name to your search. Most items are tagged by color, but not all. You can find a list of color tags here.

You can also narrow down your searches by combining tags, ie "red premiumcs" or "black mod."
Pay attention to the item tags on items you like and try using those tags in a marketplace search to see what you find.

Gold Shop Items
Users can sell Gold Shop items in the marketplace. Sometimes, those users list the Gold Shop items at prices much higher than they're worth. What's surprising, though, is that people will buy Gold Shop items for far more than they cost!
Gold Shop items are always* available in the Gold Shops. If you're not sure where an item came from, check the top of the listing to see if it's currently available in shops and if so for how much.
Click the spoiler below for an example.
        User Image
As you can see, the Warm Skater Guy Shoes are available from Durem Depot for 5g. However, users are selling them for almost 56 million gold. What's worse? Unsuspecting users are buying them for 56 million gold when they could spend just 5 gold in Durem Depot.

Note: *Some Gold Shop stores have rotating inventories (like Dernier*Cri and Loyal's Bazaar) so the item might not always be available.
Beware: Sellback prices are not necessarily accurate for items not available in stores. Some items are given arbitrary sellback prices, but are worth much more than that because they aren't available in the shops.

Note: This tip still holds true, but there's another reason for gold shop items being sold above store price now. In mid 2017, the Platinum currency was introduced. One Platinum equals ten million Gold (1 plat = 10,0000,000 gold = 10m gold)
For both currencies to work simultaneously, the lowest sell price in the marketplace is 1 plat / 10 million gold. It's not possible to sell items for 1 gold anymore... or anything less than 10 million. Therefore, users have no choice but to sell items at 10,000,000 gold when their gold shop value is a lot less.
Therefore, it's better to buy some of the gold shop items directly from the shop in the gold currency. You might be able to get an item for 100 gold, whereas you'd overpay with the platinum currency (since the minimum must be 1 plat, whereas the actual price in gold could be a lot less).

Graphs
Click the "Show Graphs" option before you buy an item. The graphs are a powerful tool.

First and foremost, pay attention to the Average Buy Price (ABP). If the listings are listed at a much higher price, wait. Don't buy yet. Wait until someone lists the item close to the ABP. However, be sure to check the graphs! The one on the right tells you how many of those items sell per day. If very few are ever sold, you might want to consider buying the item at its higher price. You might not see another one again for a while.

And pay attention to the left graph for pricing trends. If the price is generally decreasing, wait. It will likely drop more in price. If the trend is increasing, well, you might want to buy. Maybe. If it's a very sharp increase, it's likely that someone got desperate and bought an overpriced item. Or that a person (or group of people) bought up all the listings and are trying to control that item and artificially inflate the price. If the LBP are a lot higher than the ABP, if a lot of the listings are sold by the same (few) people, if a lot of items sold recently in one day (a spike on the right graph), and the price increased quickly in one day (spike on the left graph), this is likely just an artificially inflated price. Don't buy. ... The sad part? Depending on how many listings they bought and how many of that item are available, it might take a while before the prices normalize back down again.

There's so much you can tell from the graphs. Get used to checking them and using them to help you make an informed decision before you buy your items. You can save a lot of gold this way. I use them to save gold, anyway. I'm sure you can also watch trends and use them to earn gold too.

Inexpensive Items
Are you on the hunt for cheap, affordable items? Be sure to sort your marketplace search by "Lowest Price." Personally, I like to check the box for "Hide Unlisted Items" if I'm hoping to spend some gold right then. If I'm doing a general search for items, I'll be sure to add items to my wishlist if there aren't any for sale at the time. That way, I can easily check back later.
There's a thread where users post cheap items. These are items that used to cost 20b+ or even 100b+ but are now muuuch cheaper (usually due to getting re-released). Users will post to spread the word on items that they can't believe are so affordable now. The thread is called: How can that item be that inexpensive?
Many of these "deals" may seem expensive, but they really are much cheaper than they used to be at some point. And, eventually once you find your way for making gold that works for you, you'll likely think of these items as cheap too.
Check them out. Maybe you'll like some of the suggested items. c: It's nice to get quality items for cheap.
Pro-tip: Subscribe to that thread so you'll be notified when users post new deals. And so that you can post deals that you find too.
Pro-tip: If you post, be sure to stay on topic and try to include some cheap item finds in your post too. Users can't hold random conversations in that thread (due to being a GCD thread).
