Background

In Feudal Japan, the Shikon Jewel has been shattered, and its shards scattered. Those are the rumors going around anyways. So far, none have appeared near this village, and the elders would prefer to keep it that way.
Their village is quiet and peaceful. To its Eastern borders lies a forest of demons, but none ever attack the village. No one has seen a demon for over twenty years...
Still, demons do attack travellers in the forest or out on the roads. Many stories are told of the violence in the outside world. It's such a shame. To commemorate the dead, a festival is held for their souls on the first night of the waning moon (the night after a full moon).
It is given in the hopes of bringing peace to their souls, but there is one spirit who appears on that night that has never been brought to peace. She doesn't speak, but it has become a tradition for the villagers to treat her kindly in the hopes that she may move on.


Setting

This village is like many others in the Inuyasha universe. There's farming, animals, etc, etc. There are even other villages within a day's travel, of course. There's a river to the south-west, mountains to the south-east, and a forest spanning east, north-east. The forest is the most dangerous place in the area.
There almost seems to be a protective barrier around the village, though. The lesser demons always get killed before reaching the village, and no humans, once close to the village, are harmed. The villagers consider it to be a protective spirit or simply an omen of prosperity or good luck. The lesser demons know better, though. They can sense its demonic powers and smell its human scent. A half demon secretly protects that village, or rather, it enjoys attacking the local demons and driving them away from the village. The demons know, but the normal humans don't.

This is where the story begins.

Character name: Kameno
Race: Panther half demon
Appeared age: 16 (is actually about 30 years old)

Appearance:
Kameno stands at 5' 3". While in her half-demon form, she wears her hair in a messy ponytail that barely reaches her shoulders (as a human, her hair will be down). She wears stolen clothes from the villagers, and she tears the sleeves off all the tops in order to make them easier to move in. Her clothes are tattered because of how often she's running haphazardly through the forest. Her nails and canine teeth are sharp. As a human, her hair is black, and her eyes are brown.

Short bio: Kameno is the result of a union between a human man and a panther demon woman. While still an infant, their home was attacked, and after the death of her father, her demon mother dropped her off at a human village. She demanded the couple take care of the child until her return. Since that day, Kameno has been hidden in a shed behind the couple's home. Many years have passed, and that couple are now the village elders. They've managed to raise her in secret, so no one in the village knows about her.
From a young age, Kameno has been sneaking out of the shed and exploring the forest. Because she's a half-demon, many of the lesser demons have attacked her, and from necessity, she's learned to fight. After many years of their taunts and jabs, though, the fighting became less necessary and more for the fun of killing them. She kills them to train and prove her strength despite her human blood. Still, she can never win their approval, so she keeps fighting and becoming more blood thirsty.
She returns to her shed to eat the food the elders bring her but prefers to be in the forest. Only on the day when she loses her powers does she stay hidden, and on that night of the first waning moon, she sneaks into the village to pose as the restless spirit of a slain traveler.
Personality: Kameno likes to have her way. She has an attitude problem and prefers to fight rather than talk. She's rash and impatient and has never bothered getting along with people or making friends. Still, she is curious about new things, so sometimes she can slow down if only to check something out. While as a human at the Moon Festival, she is quiet and reserved. Her smiles are shy but happy. However, she won't speak a word while in her human form.
Abilities: Kameno has heightened strength, speed, endurance, and healing/regeneration from being a half demon. Her hearing is superb enough to pick up an earthquake before it happens, thanks to her panther demon blood. As a half-demon, she can sense demonic power but can't always guess what type of demon it is. Aside from hearing, she is better at speed and agility than anything else.
As a half demon, she also has the ability to become human one night a month (on the night of the first waning moon) and will begin to lose her demon abilities during that day.
Weapons: Her teeth and claws.
Other: Kameno heard that eating human flesh would increase her demonic powers, but despite that knowledge, she's never been able to bring herself to do it; her human heart has always gotten in the way.

Short bio: In ancient times there lived in hell a dragon that devoured the souls of the wicked and the bodies of any demon fool enough to cross it. One day it found its way into the mortal realm. Everything was different from the hell the dragon was used to. It did what it always did. It devoured everything in its way and slowly began to understand the world it found itself in. It ravaged ancient Japan for twenty decades until the inhabitants decided to remove it. An army of demons waged battle against the dragon for seven days and six nights. Even with all their combined power they could not defeat the dragon, only weaken it as a new group entered the battle. Eight holy men and women fought with the demons against their common enemy. It took three more days of constant battle and cost the lives of all but two of the holy warriors but they were able to seal the great dragon away. The bonds should have lasted forever but one day a shard of the sacred jewel flew over the dragon's resting place and awoken it. Trapped in the form of a small snake all it could do was hide inside the body of one of the priestesses. Now it seeks to undo its seal and finish its quest to devour the human word.
Personality: Jigoku is a very cold being. In conversation it speaks little more than it has to. Being a being from long ago Jigoku has values much different than modern day feudal Japan. In its day demons had a very strict hierarchy and it finds modern day demons to be pale shadows of their former glory.
Abilities: Back in its prime Jigoku possessed seven horns that allowed it control over aspects of the world. Now that it is sealed it can only access the weakest of the seven, the power of wind, by breaking off its horn and turning it into a sword. Though its body is that of a human Jigoku has modified it to make it strong enough to go toe to toe with most regular demons and half demons. Though demons or half demons with skill in combat can probably overcome what little power Jigoku still possessed.
Weapons: Jigoku wields the blade of wind. This blade can send slashes of wind that are capable of cutting through flesh. The wind can't cut through armor or hide that has powerful demonic or spiritual power inside of it. It is also fragile and can break easily and when broken takes a day to repair itself.
Other: Has little knowledge about modern feudal Japan.

Character name: Vallerie
Race: Fish half demon

Short bio: Her mother was a demon and her father was a human. He was killed shortly after Vallerie was born. 10 years later her mother was killed by Naraku. She lives by herself, diving down to the bottom of the lake for special herbs and crystals that she sells to the occasional traveller.
Personality: Shy, quiet, keeps to herself. She will show more of her personality if she warms up to you
Abilities: Can breath underwater, see in the dark
Weapons: Pasifist
Other: On dry land she looks like an ordinary human, except for pointy ears. When most of her legs are submerged in water, she grows a tail

Short bio: Kaijin was born as the son of Naraku, though he never really knew what his father was doing was bad. His father had assigned him a guardian named Kazuhiro, and the two soon grew close to one another. One day Kazu had taken him far away from the castle. From there they started to travel from place to place, Kazu trains Kai how to fight and use his powers that he had gotten from his father. Eventually the two found a stray, injured dog. Kai refused to leave it so the two nursed it back to health and kept it, naming him Nao.
Personality: Kai is very child-like and tends to want to play around most of the time. He is pretty shy around people and doesn't talk much about his past due to Kazu telling him not to. Once he gets to know someone he's fine being around them and will often try to play with them. He tends to stay near Kazu, and will panic sometimes when he loses sight of him. He can be rather stubborn at times but will usually know whats best.
Abilities: Heightened senses, quick reactions, miasma manipulation, web creation, agility

Short bio: Kazuhiro was born into a wolf tribe growing up he learned how to fight and survive in the world. Eventually, the tribe became controlled by Naraku. Years later Kazu had proven his loyalty and was placed in charge of Kaijin, Naraku's child. It didn't take that long for the two to become friends. One day Naraku had instructed Kazu to ran away with Kai, not wanting his son to be killed. That was when Kazu and Kai became travelers, not staying long in one place, since Kazu was worried about someone learning who Kai was. Kazu trained Kai and helped him to be able to control his powers better.
Personality: Kazu is kind and understanding to everyone he meets, though this doesn't mean that he trusts them, especially around Kaijin. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". He is very protective of Kai. He is extremely loyal and will do anything to help those he calls his friends.
Abilities: Heightened senses (mostly smell and hearing), speed, high stamina/endurance

Short bio: Her mother was a phoenix demon and her father a human warrior. She was sweet as ever, but was destroyed at the age of 10. Her mother and father killed in front of her, and was tortured almost to death. Once freed and back into the world, she had no knowledge of the it. Sets out to explore, and will kill anyone who tries to get in her way.
Personality: Akari: Trickster, Rude, Quite, Selfish, and cares for those close to her.
Abilities: (has the power of a phoenix)Controls Flames, Illusions, shape-shift items
Weapons: Over years she learns to wield Hayes Knives to help her to control her flames

She has long silver hair that she often keeps in a ponytail and brown eyes. Her height is 5' 3" and she weighs about 130lbs (although a large portion of it is muscle). She always wears the traditional Feudal garments unless she's posing as her alter ego (then she's wearing traditional warrior armor and her hair is down).

Short bio: Her parents died by the hands of a large demon in the next town over when she was 8. She started wandering and eventually came across a few kind villagers who took her to this village. While being taught how to behave like a lady, she secretly sharpened her swordsmanship. No one thinks she has any fighting ability. Now, she's a High Priestess.
Personality: Kind-hearted, fun loving girl who knows how to be serious when she needs to be. Loyal to the village. Educated. Has a soft spot for the elderly. Hates all demons with a strong passion, even half demons. Stubborn. Rough at times.
Abilities: Expert swordsmanship, ability to bless and purify evil, very knowledgeable in healing.
Weapons: Sword
Other: Her alter-ego, Seto, is a leader in battle and helped defend the village against warring villages a few years ago. Now living in peace, Seto rarely comes out unless she's wanting to pull a few pranks on the village.

Race: half wolf demon

Short bio: A couple decades ago a young girl about fifteen ended up lost. When she was about to be eaten by one of the many monsters of this world Koga saved her. After a few months she fell in love with him, it took another week after than before the wolf demon returned her feelings. After a year or so they had conceived a child, knowing that even if she could find a way home her parents would kick her out after they discovered her teenage pregnancy the sixteen year old chose to stop trying to go back to her home village and become the wife of her savior. Nine months later Mamoru was born and other then they basics of hunting and warrior training with the full wolf demons of his clan the half demon's life was uneventful, until now...
Personality: He's courageous, but occasionally doubtful, kind and loving, but shy at fist, though at the same time he is very hyper and outgoing, then to top it all off he's headstrong in battle, but chill around females when not fighting
Abilities: Superhuman Speed, Strength, Stamina, and Senses

Short bio: He is the younger brother of Mamoru. Being a year younger Ren hated being the youngest. Rem was often teased for having bright blue hair like his mother. His brother was skilled with a sword and better combat. Rem wasn't the kind to fight, he wasn't as strong as his brother. Soon later his parents let both Mamoru and Ren to explore the outside world with other humans. Since Mamoru was older, Rem has to stick by his side.
Personality: Ren is a quite boy who doesn't like violence unless needed. He can be childish but thinking he can do everything on his own. Pass all the bad, Ren is a caring guy who just wants people to accept him.
Abilities: Super Speed (Faster then his brother), Wolf senses and Healing

The afternoon sun blazed through the forest's leaves. It was a hot day, much like the days before, but the breeze was cool and forgiving to the farmers who sweated in the fields. Half the day was over already, but they were thankful that the sun would soon be falling after only a few more hours. By this time tomorrow, the entire village would be preparing for the Moon Festival that came every month. The thought of that was enough to render most without complaint, despite their hard work. It was worth it, in the end, to work hard and be able to provide for their families.

Birds sang as they danced and flitted between rooftops, and the children played together in the streets. The village was peaceful. As peaceful as it had been for the last thirty years. While demons raged and slaughtered in attempts to gather Jewel Shards, none of that violence occurred here. There were no shards of the Jewel here, only stale rumors from passerby. Even the wars in the east hadn't reached here. Mountains and a river protected them in the east and south, while a forest of demons protected them in the east and north. Yes, the forest was very dangerous to anyone who traveled alone... Demons had slaughtered many throughout the years, but that started changing about twenty years ago. As long as a traveler makes it halfway through the forest, they're safe the rest of the way to the village. No one knows why, but many offer thanks to the guardian spirit who protects them.

That's such bull! Laughter escaped the woman as she leaped through the trees. Back in the village, she listened to a man tell a traveler about his "good fortune" because of the guardian's protection. As if! She didn't kill demons to protect those humans; she was doing it for herself! "Idiots...! As if she'd waste her time helping them.
"Hmm...?" She stopped on a branch and crouched, holding onto the main trunk with her clawed hand. Did she just hear something? She swiveled her head, but also decided to feel for any demonic pressures. She hadn't dealt with any demons since mid-morning; it had been a pretty slow day. Maybe she was about to get attacked again... She breathed deeply, hoping to pick up any foreign scents if any were actually around. This was her forest, d***it.

Kaijin and Kazuhiro

Walking through the forest, Kaijin and Kazuhiro walked side to side, their dog Nao following close behind. "Kazu, how much farther are we going to go? We were walking all night." Kaijin yawned. Kazu looked down at the child "We'll find somewhere soon, hang in there okay?" he said calmly back and received a small nod.

Kazu didn't want to stop in the forest, Kaijin's demonic pressure tended to lure curious demons towards them. He hadn't thought that the forest would be so crowded. Suddenly Kazu stopped, holding his arm in front of Kai making him stop as well, his spare hand resting on the handle of his katana. "Kazu, what is it?" Kai asked quietly, he still had trouble pin pointing locations of the pressures.

Sniffing the air, Kazu managed to pick up a slight scent on the breeze. Unsure if the person had noticed them or not Kazu stood ready to fight if needed, making sure that Kaijin and Nao stayed behind him.

She listened intently and heard the pair walking through the forest. No, wait! There was a light scratching padding after the pair; an animal perhaps? Going by the voices alone, she couldn't tell what these creatures were: human travellers or visiting demons? She didn't recognize their voices, but she didn't keep up with most people's voices, anyways.

'I need to check this out...' To avoid being seen, she jumped to the higher branches of the nearby trees before heading in the direction of the travelers. Her nose wasn't as good as her ears, but there was one thing she could tell now that she was getting closer: these two were demons.

Kaijin and Kazuhiro

Kazu listened closely hearing the small shaking of leaves, someone or something was coming. "Kai stay back and remember the number one rule." Kazu said calmly not taking his gaze away from the direction of the being. Kai gave a small nod "Right." he spoke quietly back.

Kaijin knew that demons tended to go towards them, Kazu had mentioned something about his large demonic pressure but didn't really think much of it. Besides Kazu was always able to handle it, and if he needed a hand then Kai would step in, though Kazu didn't like him using his powers outside of training.

At this point it was obvious that the being had noticed them "Come out!" Kazu called out. His hand gripping the hilt of his katana all his senses on edge, he hated when things came after them.

One of the voices ahead called out, and she could only assume he was talking to her. Did he think he could tell her what to do?! She stopped, hiding a few trees away in order to stay hidden. These two were definitely demons; humans wouldn't have taken much notice of her approach. She growled low in her throat. A demon telling her what to do... She was going to kill him.

Doing her best to stay hidden, she glanced around the trunk of the tree she was in, trying to get a feel for what she was going to face. Oh great; one of them had a sword. She scowled, looking down at her claws. "..." Maybe she should get a weapon, but she hated how those weighed her down. She'd make do with what she had.

In a flurry of movement, she dove from one tree to the next, sinking lower as she circled the trio in order to attack the oldest male from his right flank. Her bare feet pushed off the trunk of the last tree, and she soared through the air, pulling an arm back to strike at Kazu and rip through his shoulder and back.

Kaijin and Kazuhiro

Kazu quickly dodged the attack and jumped back unsheathed his katana and taking a battle stance. From the corner of his eye he spotted Kaijin and Nao doing as he had taught and moving away from the battle area. He didn't want them to end up getting caught in the fight, Naraku would have his head if something someone killed Kaijin, plus he'd become fond of the boy.

"What do you want? We're just traveling through." Kazu stated noticing that the being would most likely be able to answer. He didn't really want to fight if it wasn't necessary, him and Kai had been up all night traveling and they still hadn't found a spot to camp out.

Kaijin led Nao away from the fight, quickly taking cover behind a tree. "It's okay Nao." he spoke quietly patting the dog's head before peaking out around the tree, ready to help Kazu if needed.

Her claws raked through the air as the demon dodged. "Tch--!" Before landing, she did a front flip and spun, skidding backwards with her eyes on the male. He was bigger than her; that could be a problem in the fight. Clearly he was fast enough to dodge an easy attack, too, so he was used to fighting, but he hadn't made a move to counter-attack...

Rather than appreciating the gesture, Kameno growled, hissing through her teeth. "This is my forest; no demon gets through alive!" Of course, she didn't normally have to deal with high level demons like this guy. "And don't think I've forgotten about your friends." She gestured with her head towards the tree Kai and Nao ran behind. "With a demonic pressure like that, he's probably the reason so few demons have come after me today."

"Your forest huh? Sorry didn't get the memo." Kazu smirked a bit "Again, we're just passing through." he said calmly then grew more serious. "But if you lay a single hand on Kaijin, I can't promise you'll live." he stated coldly.

Casting a quick glance over at the tree and seeing Kai peeking from behind it before he turned his attention back onto the girl. "It's your choice since it's your forest." he said still ready to fight back if needed. He knew that if the girl went for Kaijin things would get bad, and not because of anything Kazu would do. Kai was still learning how to handle his powers and when he felt trapped or cornered he would automatically fight back. Like the time a group of thugs attacked their camp while Kazu was out, when he got back he found all the men dead from Kai's miasma.
