AKB48 - who some say is named after the Akihabara in Tokyo, was formed in December 2005 by producer Yasushi Akimoto with the idea of " Idols thet you can meet everyday." Today, they are one of Japans most popular acts and have distinction of being the first female music group to sell over 30 million singles in the country.
Though members have changed over time, AKB48, as of December 2014 , Has over 130 members split into various teams : Tram: A,K,B,4, and 8, along with other side groups and various sister teams in other regions. Teams rotate live performances in a dedicated theater, and those who perform in music videos are sometimes chosen via popularity contests.
Some members of AKB48 perform live frequently in their own theater in the Don Quijote Akihabara center in Tokyo , Japan. Visitors wanting to see a performance there must apply for tickets online via loyalty system within a set window time. The theater only holds 250 guests, so estimates states that only 1 in 100 applicants actuall get a ticket.
In Japan "Idol Pop" has become a genre all its own that cherishes youth, innocence, and focus on "kawaii"/ Cuteness. The Idol System is made up of managers who create pop groups by auditioning young stars.
" Once acceptd, members are often put through years of training to perfect their image as an entertainer " this goes for K-POP as well.
