Since the dawn of time two worlds have existed side by side, like the faces of a coin, together and yet separate. A world of magic and a world of the mundane. They were destined to coexist, but the world at large had other ideas. Each creature has forever been too caught up in a struggle for power, and struggle to be the dominant species of both worlds. One simple rule applies to them both kill or be killed.
New York has always been known for it's trait as an ultimate melting pot. It is also a place where both the supernatural and the human world collide. Some try to go about their lives, living as normally as they can or perhaps relishing in their inhuman sides. Others choose to fight for one reason or another be it revenge, power, morals, or something different altogether. So that bears the question are you the hunter or the hunted? ╔══════════════╗

The Bestiary: Downworlders
┏━━━━━━━━━┓ SELKIES Long lived creatures who live as seals in the sea. Sometimes comes ashore where they shed their sealskin to become human. Often when they come ashore they find a lover, whom they can only see for a short time, before needing to return to the sea. They can be made to stay if the human can find and hide or burn the sealskin. Can be both male and female.
If a female selkie's sealskin is stolen by a human male she is within his power and is often forced to marry him. While selkie women are said to make excellent wives, they are often seen starring longingly out at the ocean. Men should be wary of this for if she finds her skin she will immediately return to her true home. If she has children it is usually one of them who find her skin and tells her where it is hidden.
Male selkies are said to be very handsome in their human form and have seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with life, such as married women waiting for their husbands. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ SHAPE SHIFTERS Shape Shifters are born as such and are long lived, ranging around 300+. They are able to shift into any animal form so long as they have had recent contact with the creature. As such they become a carbon copy of the original. In addition they are only able to change into animals and NOT plant life or other humans**.
In human form, they retain some on the enhanced senses and strength of the animals they turn into, picking up those of their most recent shift, but it is only a fragment of what they have in animal form.
In animal form they are virtually indiscernible from the natural creature, except that they retain their human eye color, and strange human like behavior for an animal. In addition in both animal and human form, shifters have a comradeship with animals. It is how they are able to get close enough to wildlife to be able to shift into them.
**Shifters who posses the ability to change into Humans are called Skin Walkers and are extremely dangerous for they have killer their own kind. This is the only way to obtain the powers of a Skin Walker. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ WITCHES Witches' lives measure in centuries. Usually 300+
Witches come in circles of six. Generations of several families tend to ban together and that is how these circles are formed. All witches are from a hereditary bloodline. These circles can choose to bind themselves together in a ritual or remain unbound.
The individuals in a bound circle have limited or even no power on their own. However unbound circles -though still more powerful when the circle is all in one place ie. The same city- have all of their individual power and tend to be very strong.
When an unbound circle is separated the members are weaker but still retain more power than that of a bound witch, and the level to which they are weakened depends on the witch.
In addition there are power crystals, generally quartz, that magnify a witch’s power and can amplify even a bound witch to great strength. A bound circle relies on each other, and need two or more -with each additional member the stronger the magic- to use their power.
All witches are able to perform spells, incantations, and brew potions. The source of these is usually from their family’s book of shadows but a witch can certainly create their own as well. Witches also harbour the abilities of telekinesis, conjuration, and channeling. A witch in a ring of ashwood is unable to perform any magic and iron sulphate can be used to weaken them. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ NYMPHS Immortal creatures connected to nature. They are a part of mother earth, and tend to be more at home in a natural setting. While they heal faster than a human, it isn't instant nor are they invulnerable. A sever enough injury will still cause fatality.
Nymphs are able to control the elements. Each one is connected to a different aspect of the elements. They can tap in to one of the four, either fire, water, earth, or air.
Having been the inspiration for the term nympho, they are very sexual creatures. While it isn't a need in their life, they thrive on human sexuality. Nymphs tend to be seducers, and are notorious for using such actions to get their way. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ BOGEYMAN Immortals who were once human. To become a bogey one must die during a moment of great fear. Note that this must be something substantial. They appear completely human -aside from when they are actively using their power at which time their eyes go completely black-, and can be male or female despite the 'man' in their name.
They feed on fear in a literal sense. While they don't need food to fuel them, they must take in the energy produced by fear. As such they are invulnerable to physical damage and any injury heals as soon as the obstruction is removed. The only way to kill a bogey is starvation.
Because of their need of fear, they possess a unique ability. They are able to manifest, though in a hallucinatory state, the fears of others. These obviously vary from person to person, and those seeing the product of their power perceive it to be very real.
When tapping into a person's deepest fear it is possible for a bogey to literally scare someone to death. Usually the actual cause of death is cardiac arrest, but that is because the fact that the bogey feeding off them is undetectable. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ WEREWOLVES Wolves are immortal and stop aging either as the point of being bitten or at full maturity which every happens later, or simply the later for those that are born wolves.
To become a wolf one must either be born that way or receive a bite from an Alpha.
Wolves are at the mercy of the moon. During the full moon, young and uncontrolled wolves are forced to shift. Emotions are heightened pulling things like rage, lust, ect. To the surface.
They can shift both partial and fully into wolf form. A partial shift causes the body to become more animal like while still remaining mostly human, for example the extension of claws, teeth, and longer hair.
Wolves are pack animals. Every pack consists of an Alpha, the only wolf that can turn humans, and at least one Beta. To become an Alpha the rank must be passed willingly or taken by force as the result of the death of the former Alpha. Pack-less wolves, or Omega, also exist but are much weaker. Eye color is the easiest way to tell wolf rank. In their transformed state, an Alpha's eyes are red, a Beta's gold, and an Omega's blue.
Even in human form, a wolf is vastly stronger, faster, have accelerated healing and harbor better senses than a normal human. When calling on their wolf this is amplified even farther.
Any non-immortal bitten by an Alpha is able to become a werewolf. The bite has a 30% mortality rate. The bite will either turn a mortal or kill them. When biting an immortal, it cause a sever infection that in most cases heals in a few days ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ VAMPIRES Immortals with enhanced senses. They can see, smell, taste, ect thousands of times stronger than when they were human. All vampires were once human, and the avenue to making the transition is to consume vampire blood -which has heal properties for non-vampires- and die while it’s still in your system. The human must then feed on human blood within twenty-four hours. If they do, they are a vampire forever, and if not they die.
Once the transition is complete they must feed on blood -human or otherwise- and without blood they will desiccate into mummification though not die. Human blood makes them stronger both physically and mentally, though it is possible to sustain on animal blood.
Vampires have a range of special abilities. There are the normal, or at least the expected, super strength, speed, and rapid healing. Beyond that they also are able to mentally control humans, called compulsion, and younger vampires have the ability to turn off their human emotions -at least for a few hundred years-.
They aren’t without weaknesses; a vampire can be killed by a wooden stake to the heart, fire, sunlight, decapitation, or heart extraction. In addition they can be weakened by magic, vervain -can cause death in large doses and also prevents compulsion in humans- and must be invited in to enter a home.
Witch magic can be both detrimental and beneficial depending on the intentions of the witch. A stone called lapis lazuli can be spelled to allow a vampire to walk in daylight ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ There are also DEMONS. To which I will incorporate into the plot. You can't really be one but your characters can encounter them and some do use speech so they are technically an NPC. Demons are inter-dimensional beings who travel from world to world and destroy everything in their path. They return to their dimension when they die. Religiously, they are defined as Hell's denizens, the servants of Satan, but for the purposes of the Clave, they are any malevolent spirit whose origin is outside of the home dimension. There are many different kinds of demons. Many demons are poisonous and the Slayers way of healing is ineffective against it.
Greater Demons are an extension of demons and are far more powerful. They must be killed both in their physical and ethereal forms to be forced away from the home dimension. Sunlight and Seraph blades (The one every Slayer is equipped with) are fatal to both demons and Greater Demons. Greater Demons, like all demons, never truly die. When they are killed, they are not simply sent back home, they are scattered in between worlds. It will take a long time for them to re-form and they will be weak for years to come.
Notes: Demon's can be summoned, either by witches, slayer, or anyone with the proper dark book of spells. Most people do it stupidly to gain power, thinking they can trap the demon and force it to do it's bidding (works easier with lower level demons).
When demons die they tend to fold into themselves and vanish, generally with a shriek. Some demons leave things behind when they die (ash, dust, fluid, etc.). ┗━━━━━━━━━┛

The Bestiary:Human Adaptation ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ HUMANS They are your regular, run of the mill human with no special ability or strength.
There are two types of them though, those who are clueless about the supernatural world around them. And those who have been introduced somehow to the supernatural. They can be thrown into the world whatever way you want, though some may choose to learn more or some may choose to pretend it doesn't exist.
Most are very frightened of the supers around them since they have no idea what their getting themselves into. Though there are those few who are fascinated by it and want to find out more. It will all depend on the personality of the character to decide yes. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ SLAYERS Slayers are all from the same linage, meaning their appearance is a matter of genetics. The ability is passed from parent to child. Like all other humans they are mortal.
Unlike other humans, they are physically stronger, faster and physically better. While their perception is sharper they don't have enhanced senses. Most are trained from a young age to be warriors, and even with those that aren't they have a natural aptitude for it.
The goal of the Slayers is to end the plague of demons on Earth. They are dispatched to every place on Earth to fight against demon hordes. The fight even continues after death. Their bones are used, as the bones of demon hunters are powerful protection, to fortify important buildings.
They are a natural balance between the human world and the supernatural and the theory was that they were destined to be those that kept the dark side of the supernatural from getting out of hand. Instead many of them have been influenced by hunters, and seek out battles with the other side instead of looking to further harmony. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ DOPPELGÄNGERS Doppelgängers are completely human. They are gifted with no special powers.
The cause of the appearance of a Doppelgänger is unknown. They are always a carbon copy of a supernatural but they themselves are utterly human. They look exactly like the original version, but are their own person. Often having polar opposite personalities. As such they often serve as adversaries to each other.
Please pm the user as well as me that you are wanting to make a Doppelgänger for before completing the profile. Just so that there is no confusion. Thank you. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ GIFTED They are other wise human aside from the possession of a single power. Being gifted is a genetic trait as it is a state of human adaptation and passed from parent to child. Though it is possible for a child to be born to normal parents as gifted, and more unusual for a child to be born normal to gifted parent.
Each individual's power is different. Even those that are similar, manifest different in each person because of the variation in how a person chooses to use it.
These Gifts can range from the simple –breathing under-water, personal telekinesis– to the more complex –time-space manipulation–. They can be physical or mental, they are almost always beneficial to the individual but some can come with a back lash. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛ █ ┏━━━━━━━━━┓ HUNTERS They have no physical differences and any human could choose to become one. Most that do have some tragic event that compels them or a family history in the practice… or both.
Each individual or family has a different set of morals as to how -or who- they pick as targets. Some will only go after those that have taken or endangered human life -ie we hunt those who hunt us-, and others hold no discretion, all supernatural beings -peaceful or not- are fair game. There are a few that even specialize in taking down certain creatures, for any given reason
Weaponry -including but not limited to guns, bows, and swords- are the predominate method they use to gain the upper hand. In addition many become proficient in the weaknesses of their chosen prey -ie wolf's bane, vervain ect.-.
Most of them must rely on the art of the surprise attack, because it is no secret that even the weakest of those they hunt are much stronger than they are. The expanse of their knowledge is either their greatest ally or their worst enemy depending on how much or little they know about the world they are both in and yet not a part of. ┗━━━━━━━━━┛

The Government and Politics The Slayer's follow a strict set of rules set out in the Shadowslayer's Codex when a slayer is first given over to the Clave. There are many rules and guidelines that must be followed.
The Clave The Clave is the general organization of all slayers, particularly from older more noble shadowslayer families, it is the governing body of the world of half-humans, headed by the Council. They foresee over laws.
The Clave has different branches in different areas of the world, the Institutes are the seats of power. Every active Shadowhunter in an area belongs to a certain Clave, such as the Conclave in New York, Enclave in London.
The Covenant Covenant is the Law upheld by the Clave: The Accords are peace negotiations signed between the Downworlders and the Clave. According to the Accords, as long as the rules stated here are not broken, they can live in peace without bother and may even provide each other help when the need ever rises. The Accords are signed again every fifteen years to keep the magic potent. Although the Accords keep the two parties in good enough terms to avoid slaughter between them, hostility is quite unavoidable

Unaware of who her father was, she flourished under her mother's care, learning how to harness and control her element. Although the men strong enough to live near her were more than virile enough to satisfy her for a night, she soon found herself restless and wanting more. Without so much as a backward glance, she left the place she called home, moving to Portland Oregon. The city offered her more variety than her wilderness home in the mountains, and kept her close enough to nature that her power wasn't affected. She took her fill the first months she lived in Portland, picking up a waitressing job in the most popular restaurant. Always eager for more, her element and nature to desire pushing her to go big or go home, she made another move --this time across the continental US to the city of New York. Far from the great expanses of wild that she was used to, the adjustment period was hard. Nevertheless, she managed to snag an apartment near Central Park and get herself enrolled in NYU. There, she's managed to flourish despite her distance from home and pure, untainted nature. With such a vibrant city around her, she's discovered that even a nymph can survive in a world of steel and cement.Personality Toni is a bright girl, and has learned to survive over the years. She's feisty which the men in this town seem to enjoy more and more. Like her natural element she can be unpredictable flame of emotions and power ,and take down anything that stands in her path ,but there's little reason to worry about that. She's easy to get along with but can be a bit transparent especially when she's in a heightened emotional state. Overall Toni is a great person anyone would want to be friends with.
