Places To Look
Gold Shops are the #1 place to look, under the Shops tab. Feel free to explore, but I'm going to highlight some of my favorite shops here.
Skin Tyte gives you so many different skin and base options. Did you know that you could be a vampire, dark elf, zombie, alien, angel/devil imp, centuar, or an orc? Additionally, you can color your skin blue, pink, or yellow with smoothie potions. After you collect bugs and create ink, you can also make your own tattoos in Skin Tyte. You can buy animal furs. You can even swap genders with the gender bender potion.
Barton Jewelers is always the place to get lovely accents for your outfits. Jewelry, crowns/tiaras, glasses, hairpieces, and more!
CrosStitch has some of the best quality gold shop items because they're designed by fellow Gaians.
Global Imports has some of the most colorful and exotic-looking items, as you can probably tell by the name.
H.R. Wesley is the place to get your formal wear. You can even buy a wedding dress here or put together a tuxedo.
Finally, I'm going to mention that Dernier Cri used to be a luxury shop with some of the highest-quality items anywhere on the site, at what used to be incredibly high prices. Nowadays, with inflation rampant, this old shop is considered affordable by many and easy to work towards.
These stores take payment not in gold.
Prize & Joy - requires tickets in order to purchase from them. You can earn tickets by playing certain games, such as Slots, Blackjack, or Tiles.
The Treehouse - requires wing stickers in order to purchase from them. Wing stickers are only given out during some events. When there's an event going on, be sure to look for the wing sticker icon and click it if you see it. 
Grant Item ArchiveWho doesn't love free stuff? - not updated BUT users post the newest links so if you check out the new pages vs the first page you'll get active grants.

Adding Premium Items And Other AlternativesAfter enough time on Gaia, you'll probably want to save up for premium items because they're just so darned fancy. You'll either spend a little bit of Gaia cash, or you'll save up a lot of gold. You can get a few premium items, but not enough for a whole outfit. However, you can still make an amazing outfit by transforming a cheap outfit (or vise versa, filling in the spaces with cheap stuff). Let's look at a few examples.
All - Goldshop arrow Added Premium Items
I created these two outfits myself, using a couple of the same premium items.

Sometimes, all it takes is hair and makeup (or other face mods) to make an outfit stand out. Premium items like these are some of the most versatile items to own, but also some of the most expensive.

Sometimes you can create a cheap outfit that looks similar to a premium or otherwise more expensive outfit. They might not be exactly the same and they might not be quite as nice, but you achieve a similar look.
