It was a chilly evening in December, though not nearly so cold as some of the Augusts that Juni had survived in the Colombian mountains. It was not raining, it was not snowing, the wind was not biting...
...and Juni had handed in her final paper. Taken her final exam. Her father was coming down soon, to fly with her home to Colombia and her family - a change in their plans, when they had decided to stay in Japan for the Christmas break originally, perhaps, but after the term she had had, he had decided it was necessary.
Juni wasn't sure how she felt about the idea of missing the winter festival; the opportunity to spend some time with her friends without the ever-present threat of being kicked out had some appeal. But she was tired. It had been a hard term. And she wasn't sure her father was wrong in his belief that she would recover faster with her family's support to bolster her, even though she would see memories of Mama everywhere she looked when they got back.
Especially when it was possible that she would not be back. She didn't know whether Akinora-sensei was going to follow through on his threat to fail her, or just give her such an abysmally low grade as to make it very difficult for her to stay, but either way, she wasn't sure her father would let her stay at Ouran in an environment that tolerated such toxic attitudes.
So Juni decided to climb the bell tower. It had been taunting her all term, daring her to take the challenge to come up. But she had been being quiet and well-behaved. Well, if she was going back to her family, she figured she'd better remember how to be a bit badly behaved, just so she didn't get smothered under a dogpile of cousins.
