Here is a story on a very greedy landlord. Read if you are interested and hopefully you will agree that this landlord is unreasonable and greedy.
My family is trying to sell our business because my father is going to retire. We do not own the building we that our business occupies, we rent it. We were scheduled to sell the business on the 24th of June but landlord made a very unreasonable demand of $42 000 rent a year to the man who was going to buy our business. We don't even know why the landlord made such an unreasonable demand, currently we only pay half that amount of rent a year. So of course the man was not going to buy our business if the landlord makes such an unreasonable demand.
This meant we had to try to sell the business to someone else. Luckily for us another man was offered to buy our business. This time the landlord asked for only $26000 yearly rent. So we were on our track to sell our business. But then the landlord demanded to see the man's work experience and assets and so the man gives the landlord the information and meets all requirements.
By now it is the 1st of July. We are hoping to finish the sale. But the landlord says no. He tells us that the building is part of a family trust and he must discuss it with his extended family and we must wait because his grandma is in hospital.
Fine, so we give him till the 3rd of July. Then on the 3rd they tell us the decision is still not made and we need to wait for the 5th of July. Well we wait for the 5th and the landlord says we will decide on the 8th of July.All these extensions and the earlier unreasonable demands to the people buying our business has made us a bit curious. The landlord turns out to be a lawyer, yep scary-- he knows his stuff. It is now becoming apparent that the landlord wants to take our business and sell it himself.
This is how he is legally allowed to do it. Because we are no longer operating our business, we will stop paying rent. If we stop paying rent we cannot sell our business. This makes it legal for the landlord to kick us and our business off his property. Once the landlord does this, he can offer to sell a business on the property making money from the sale of a business and the rent from a new tenant. It is Plain GREEDY. Also the landlord would not re-new our lease this makes it impossible for us to sue him on any attempts.
It is obvious this landlord is aiming for this because he is delaying the sale for so long. Now the landlord is playing games trying to complicate the situation until we no longer have legal ownership of our business. And we aren't even profiting from the sale of the business in fact all this delaying is making us gain more expenses cause we have to pay more fees to the lawyers and agents representing us. Not to mention this landlord already owns over 10 properties all which he rents out, I just don't understand why he is trying to be so greedy.
