I went to Wal-Mart the other day and found some nice ones. There should be pattern books that show what they look like and the number so you can find it in the drawers

Simplicity PatternsMcCalls Patterns

McCalls has some good medieval mix and match patterns that are pretty good. And I don't remember them having zippers involved either.
Also see if you can find some theatre costuming books. That's where I got a few of my ideas from, then I stole the bits from different patterns, just to keep the sizing right.

Simplicity, McCalls, and Butterick all have medievalish patterns... not usually the most accurate, but easily modified. Zippers can be exchanged for grommets, Elastic can be replaced with drawstrings, etc. If you mix and match, you can come up with some pretty nice things, too.

another good way to get patters is off of people in your group who sew. Normaly they will help you make a copy of their pattern and fix it to better fit you. I do this quite a bit and the funny thing is I get all my patters from most of the men in my group.

I find that a lot of the patterns readily available at the average walmart are, if not exactly right, easy to alter.
