im thinking about quitting winter drum line next season... iim tired of it being all i ever do. its all i do after school, its cost me grades, a few friends and shitload of money. all the instructors ever want is more out of us, i spend all my saturdays there and im tired of not having a life at all. im also seriously considering wuitting marching percussion in the fall season and doing guard instead, it seems a lot less stressfull (at my school anyways) i can spin already, and the guard instructor isnt a pissy b**** like or percussion instructors are. anybody have any comments?

Yeah, it takes a lot of time and devotion. You kinda just have to decied what matters more to you and prioritize.

Just do what you think is right.
But it seems to me like you have enough time to get on Gaia.

Yeah, this season kinda made a lot of our winter percussion people want to quit too. We got a new percussion instructor last year, and last year he was really nice (probably because he was nervous). This year, however, he was awful. He took a cabasa part from me before I even got to try it just because he likes my friend Kara better than me. But the part I hated most was this:
My friend Brian has been in the pit for 4 years, and winter percussion for 3. He was pit section leader during marching season this year. When we voted for who would represent us during awards, he won hands-down. But Travis (our percussion guy) demoted him twice and put two juniors at the head of the ensemble just because Brian is technically an oboe player and "not a real percussionist." scream

That is so messed up. Something like that happend to me and and a friend on our band trip. He asked our instructor if he (the pit leader) and I (the assistant drum captain) could accept awards for percussion because we've never gotten the chance to on a trip and he said no and it's our senior year and we've been there all 4 years and we learn our music and we're very dedicated but instead he had a junior accept it and he's been on the line for 2 years. He could have at least let us go up with him but I expect this kind of thing from him. He even forgot that the other kid was a senior confused .
Edit:
To dezaric: oh, and about winter percussion I don't know what to tell you because we were supose to compete this year and last year but we never did. I've seen a competition and I would think it would be worth it but I know how time consuming band can be but I wish we had a chance to ompete at least one year crying . I guess you just have to figure out if it's worth it to you and you have to think about what you'd be leaving if you did. I hate to see people quit but I can understand why some do. if you do guard like you were thinking of, you'd still be in band and there's always winterguard so that might be good. I really like drumline and I've decided to stick it out no matter what because even though we go through some messed up stuff sometimes it's worth it to me to make time for playing the drums and learning more about them. When I told my dad all of the stuff that was going on balancing school , band , and trying to figure out what to do for the line my first year as a section leader he told me to remember that diamonds are made under pressure. I hope this helps.

Winterdrumline. Second hardest thing I've ever had to do besides Marching Band. Our show for this year: Tears For Fears.

It was our first competition, and we hadn't really finished our show yet. Come to think of it, we hadn't even ran the part of the show we did know yet, and there we were running it for the first time out on the floor. . The drumline had gotten their drill for the first time 3 days prior to the competition and everyone was completely overwhemled with fear.

Well, as it turns out, one of the transitions from a quick movement to a slow movement totally bombed and there we are, all of us keyboard players playing out of time and making the band sound like mush. (Drumline wasn't playing at this point) Well, finally the movement ends and drumline comes in, but WAY to fast.

Now the pit is frantically jogging to play all their parts when we switch instruments, move places, etc. And just then, I had a keyboard mallet run. I basically ran from one end of the keyboards to the other to get there in time, and was the only one who made it out alive from the run. (3 other players had the run too, but didn't make it in time.)

So, onto the fourth movement. The only tempo we have for about 45 seconds (since no one plays there) was our bassist. Guess what? His patch cord that amplifies his bass DIED and no one knew what to do. A lot of us just kinda stood there while drumline tried to do their drill out of step. As we finally get to everyone elses entrance, we all kind of just stand there, not knowing what to do because we have no clue where we are.

We end the show about a minute later after just basically guessing where we had been, playing our parts and hoping for the best. We rush off the floor, and later find out we got cut from Finals.

Later in the season we end up taking 2nd plalce, and 3rd place a lot, so we weren't THAT horrible. Just instructed poorly.

Don't quit. Keep at it. It was rewarding...all that work and stupid practice we put into it...but we had a horrible instructor....Dont quit. It really can't get much worse than what I went through...

In winterguard/drumline, hard work does not go ignored. The hard work actually gets you physically fit (if you do it right.), gets you friends, and most importantly, gives you memories.

Don't say

drumline is part of your life, big or small. no matter what, everyone has a life as long as they breathe. passion is very important to possess, excersise, and cherish.

Our wdl only reherses about 2-3 times a week so for me it's not that demanding, i might also quite it so i can get more hours at work. I feel bad about considering it because we're pretty low on good keyboard players... I know i'm not the best we have, but i'm very devoted and work harder than some of our better players. I know our instructer's gonna be mad but he'll get over it. But he might resent it and screw me over when it comes to parts for fall line... we'll see..
