Book One Paranormalville Chapter 1 BEGINNINGS
He stared up at the off-white ceiling, sleep was not going to come easy tonight. When did it ever for him? Out of boredom, he raised his hand up toward the spot in the ceiling where the light fixture hung, his fingers curved around the space and squeezed together as if crushing the bulb from where it hung. Sometimes the simplest things seemed to entertain him when he was tired and couldn't sleep. 'Soon,' he thought, 'very soon I will.'
He got up and dressed, there was no sense trying to sleep, not when he felt like this. Normally, he might be writing something, but no inspiration was coming despite interesting news surrounding a mysterious killer. Maybe he would meet up with this killer, seemed like the way things worked. His last book was about a very humanoid android that no one could tell wasn't human. Of course no one believed his books were anything but fiction, but he supposed he was fine with that. It was a little strange though. I mean, many of his books weren't impossible to believe. Okay, so maybe the man-eating alien trees that eventually became harmless elms under our planet's atmosphere was a little far fetched, but that didn't mean that ghosts, dragons, and the Loch Ness monster were any less true. What was strange about this killer was that his pattern seemed to mimic the Chinese zodiac. He'd cut off the limbs of a woman who had a scale-like skin condition and a blood disease, obviously she was supposed to be the snake. The second victim worked with primates and was doctored to look like a monkey. It was anyone's guess what the killer was up to. If anything, Kelly Slayer Beacon would find out. "Couldn't sleep, Kelly?" his roommate, Jazz asked. Jasper is a doctor, the only one Kelly trusts, but she also has total amnesia aside from her first name and what her occupation was before she lost her memory. She also created the android spoken of in the earlier notes (After her amnesia). Between what Kelly makes and the android, Poe, makes and sends back, and Jazz with her profession, Kelly figured he made out pretty well when he wasn't selling or writing books. "Nope." Kelly answered sheepishly. Jasper sighed, she couldn't blame him, the paranormal always seemed to find him. She found him after all. Normally, a simple case of amnesia wouldn't qualify for paranormal activity, but the fact that she remembered a bright flash just before waking near Kelly's building, and with only her instinct to guide her to Kelly. Al that led Jasper to believe he was probably possessed or a spell was involved with her amnesia. And, she wondered how someone like him could sleep at all. "Did you want something to help you sleep?" she asked finally. "Er... No, I think I'll just watch some TV."
Dark clouds loomed over head, and it seemed like it would rain soon. "Just rain, nothing more." he frowned. Nonetheless, the thought of rain was making him restless. Come on Massy, you're at work. You can't afford to be fired. So, get back to work!" he scolded himself. "Deacon, are you finished with those transaction records we might be able to fit you in to help us with a customer today." said a co-worker. "Uh, almost finished.." Massy replied. Wow. Him? Massy Deacon, helping with a tattoo? He was still just an apprentice. Though even he had to admit, a fast learner. "Well, she'll still be here, but try to finish quickly, this to help you, y'know." "Yeah..." Massy frowned. He continued to type up the records of what customers payed with, how much the tattoo or piercing was, and even the calculated tips, at last saving it all in a computer file. Finally, he washed his hands, put on sanitary gloves, and joined his co-workers. What he came to see was two other's painting permanent black stripes on a girl trying to become a tiger woman. Even her natural black hair had orange stripes. They handed him a needle gun with ink and he began working on her arm. This woman was beautiful to him, and even more so with interesting tiger markings on her. He wondered what possessed her to go through so much pain to become so beautiful. Hours pass and everyone had finished the project the customer had assigned. In another couple of years, her personal journey would be complete. Massy was the one to take the girl's payment, a check she made out to the shop. They made small talk as he jotted down the record of the transaction. Finally, she left, and left her pen behind. Massy quickly followed her, to get it back to her. "Oh, thanks, but you really didn't need to return that." she said. "I wanted to Lisa." he said. "How did you-? Right. The check. What are you even doing working there? You don't seem the type." "I like it and it pays well. I need that money for college. Besides, I have a few myself." He rolled up a sleeve, showing a dragon playing in the ocean. He lifted his shirt to reveal a cartoony monkey on his chest, and taking off his ring, revealed a small, detailed, coiled snake on his finger. "I did the snake one myself." he said. "Are you left handed? That one must have been hard to do, even if you are." "No, not left handed, just a little tough, but I managed. I am ambidextrous though." "As much as I'd like to hear more, I must be going." she handed him a card that had a cell number on it, and told him to call sometime. As he made his way back to the shop, he bumped into a man. "Oh... sorry, nurr," to which the man replied, "It is fine, I was not harmed." 'That was strange, who was that guy? He seemed familiar somehow.' Massy thought. 'That was indeed odd, he looks just like Mister Kelly, Poe thought.
Chapter 2 THE KILL
Poe, a scientific marvel in android technology, especially considering a mere medical doctor made and named him, was a near perfect creation of "a new species" mankind has been trying to create for centuries. His synthetic skin felt like normal human skin. He had pain receptors, a was programmed to understand and "feel" a wide range of emotion. He was confused still as he walked down to the cafe where he was to meet Kelly and Jazz. Just a few doors from the cafe, he found Kelly. "Hello. Did I not see you a few minutes ago? No, on second thought, that could not have been you, he weighed approximately ten pounds more, his glasses had no prescription, and I believe he said, "'Ner'... or was it, 'Nurr'?" "Hmm? Are you suggesting I may have a doppelganger, Poe?" "Perhaps. It did seem like that, because he was wearing glasses that had no sight enhancer prescription, the lenses were simply plastic." Poe said, "Are we waiting on the doctor?" "Hm? Oh no. she's already inside. I just happened to see something in the window I might buy." Kelly's eyes seemed fixed on some designer journal cover, some other notebooks, perhaps, even a printer, Poe could not really tell. "I think I will join her. " poe said at last. Inside the cafe, sat the doctor and a girl friend of Kelly's. Charlie Taylor, seemed pretty normal, she was pretty normal too considering that she had been kidnapped when she was young by aliens and they had implanted some gene fusion thing with that of a dog. Those dog characteristics were only evident at certain time of the year, and even then, only those who knew her best could really understand what was happening. "Hello Charlotte, hello Jasper." Both ladies greeted the android as he sat down. Kelly soon arrived with four journals, handed three of them off to his three friends. "Apparently, I have a doppelganger. This is for you guys. I want you to keep notes of strange behavior I may do, because it will most likely have been him to have done it. It could make for an interesting book."
It was storming so hard, if one were walking or driving in it, they wouldn't be able to see far. It was on a nigh such as this that Massy lost his parents to an accident. It always made him uneasy because of that memory. Luckily for him, Lisa trusted Massy enough to bring him with to her weekend cabin on the outskirts of the city. The downpour, the lightening, and heavy clouds, the thunder, none of it was making him feel very good. Remember back to that night, being in the backseat, his parents in the front seats, they were on the drive home from an evening mass. Lightening struck the road ahead, his dad swerved to avoid the sky born bolt, they ended up in a ditch and Massy swore he saw an angel of death swing his scythe and decapitate his father, whose head landed in the young man's lap. At first, he had been terrified, but that gave way to fascination. He told he story to Lisa, a short of compelling feeling, like she should know what happened to him. Of course he left a few details out, already knowing that people wouldn't believe him about the reaper, and that many people were squeamish about blood and gore. "Aw! You poor thing. I'm sorry that happened to you." Lisa replied. Massy just frowned, as if studying her to see if her reaction was real. "I feel strange all of a sudden." "It's just a paralyzing agent. You'll be young and beautiful forever. I'll see to that." Fear was now showing in the tiger woman's eyes, "W- what are you saying, Massy?" "The Chinese Zodiac Killer, the snake woman, the monkey man, and now you the tiger, you'll be part of my masterpiece." He advanced slowly toward her such as you'd see in a zombie film, giggling like a maniac, and laughing, "Nurr," in between giggles. Things being as they were, Lisa couldn't get far, the affects of the chemical had her stumbling in her try for escape. At last she could no longer struggle, no longer move. With some strain, he carried her over his shoulder and started a bath. Death by drowning would be the verdict. "Ugh. That was a bit of a disappointment." Massy sighed, and got his things together to drive carefully home.
Chapter 3 GLUTTON
A few days later, a story accrediting the strange serial killer ran in the local news and papers about the girl with tiger stripes being drowned in the tub of her vacation home. "They found a mysterious chemical in her blood which suggests she was murdered, and since she had tattoo markings of that of a tiger, the officials are saying it was the work of the Chinese Zodiac Killer." the reporters were saying. Kelly felt a connection somehow to the case, maybe it had to do with that doppelganger of his. He would have to look into things himself. "You're not going this alone, Kelly. I can tell you want to investigate this. I'm going too, changes are, he won't try to kill you if you have someone with." Jazz said. "Thanks, but if my heart is telling me right, he won't hurt me anyway, he wants to talk to me." Kelly said.
Robert Beafie returned to is dorm from classes with ten different snacks from the vending machine in hand, already munching on the Oreo minis when he let himself into the room he shared with a roommate. Upon entering, it sounded like his roommate had the playboy channel on or something, but that wasn't like him. As he came closer to the sound, Bob could hear it was actually his roommate and his new girlfriend. The door to the bedroom was closed thankfully. So, Bob waited for the two to be finished, munching, and eating all the snacks he bought, and even raiding the fridge while waiting. At last, the two finished, dressed, and went into the living room. "About time, Deacon! I'm going to a party, I need to get changed for it." Bob said. I have to be going, Massy. I've gotta get a little studying in and I have work tomorrow, plus a test." the girl said. "Okay, see you around Mandy." Massy said. "So, you and the University's bicycle... Aren't you upset she sleeps around? Aren't you worried you'll catch something?" said Bob. "No, to both questions. We've come to a mutual understanding that we're using each other. I use protection, and I get checked twice a month anyway, because of where I work. I'm as healthy as an ox." Massy answered. As Bob changed clothes for the party, massy went to the fridge for a snack. "You damn pig! It isn't enough when you eat your food, you have to eat mine too! I thought you said you didn't like vegetarian food!" "I don't. Your food is crap, but I was hungry." "Oh please, you could live off of the fat on yourself! It wouldn't kill you not to eat for ten minutes, our gluttonous boar!"
Since the two figure the latest victim must have known her killer somewhat to have allowed him into her cabin, they figured on talking to people she knew. They talked to her mother, cousins, an ex-boyfriend, and friends until one said that she had suddenly became fast friends with a tattooist, and since there were only two shops in the whole city, that narrowed things down some. Seeing as how the shops were closed and would be for the weekend, their search was at an end for the time being. So, Kelly worked on the killer's profile of what they knew, what questions he wanted to ask at the tattoo places and what he personally wanted to ask of the killer.
He was surprised. It had been years since he had lived in the house, but the electricity was still running. It was a good thing too, he supposed, it was perfect for his plan. Bob had gotten too drunk and passed out at the party. Massy had been called to take him home, but he had other plans and decided to take him up to the house where his parents had lived to do what he was planning to do. Massy brought tons of food, mostly take out, which took much of his latest paycheck to pay for, propped Bob up in an old chair (none of the furniture had been removed since Massy moved away apparently.) in front of the kitchen table, and waited until he awoke. "Where am I? Deacon? What's going on here?" Bob said, slowly coming to. "I figured that since you like to eat so much, I'd bring you here so you can eat as much as your want." Massy said cheerfully. "But... But let's just go back to the dorm. I'll pay you back the money for what I ate, I- I swear!" Bob stuttered, knowing something was very wrong with the situation he was in. Massy looked very angry and shoved a take out box and fork in front of him, "Eat!" He hesitantly did as he was told and had the Chinese dinner done before long. Massy shoved a bag full of McDonald's food in front of him, commanding him again to eat. He did. After awhile of this, Bob was going slower and even wanting to stop. Massy threatened to gut him then and there if he didn't continue to eat. After the food was almost gone, Bob sat moaning, groaning, and unable to lift his fork. Massy decided this was enough, and helped Bob into the car under the assumption they were going home. Massy just drove around, drove until Bob passed away, and then dumped him after a few "alterations." He was to be her of the pig/boar according to his alterations.
Chapter 4 ACCUSED
Kelly was at his desk, and the doctor was away visiting Poe when he heard a knock at the door. It was the police, apparently there was another victim. Not much was explained to him, but they wanted him to come in for questioning. He told them he wanted to leave a note for Jazz and then he would go with them. He quickly scribbled down where he would be when she returned and went with the police. Before Kelly knew a thing, they were slapping cuffs on him, reading him his rights, and waving a confession paper in his face. It wasn't until they got him to a cell and Jazz was able to visit hours later, that Kelly found out that his hairs were found on and near the victim, and also that the victim, altered to look like a pig had died of old spoiled potato salad, and that flesh was cut from his back and somehow pasted on his head and nose to appear like pig's ears and snout. "You think he might have been in our apartment and taken my hair? Or found some other way to get a hold of it? Obviously he isn't a clone or he'd actually need glasses. Poe said his glasses weren't prescription, just plastic. I actually need my glasses." "What do you mean? You aren't making any sense." "Remember when I told you that Poe saw my doppelganger, and that he was purposely trying to look like me? Well, awhile back, I began to suspect that my doppelganger is in fact our killer, the fact that I'm in here, and he's still out there kind of supports my theory. He wanted me to know of his existence. As much as I want out of here, I think this is the best place for me. I say we wait until he kills again, I think the cops realized something wasn't right, and are waiting this out too." "Okay, if you say so, Kelly."
'It's only the evening? Shoot, seems like the wait for the killer to strike is going forward on full crawl, Kelly thought. 'But since the time between kills is fewer between, maybe I'll be out of here in a few days time.' "Hey, David. There's a woman here to see you." a man called from the front of the room, "Make it quick, our break's almost over." "Did I just hear him call you David, Poe?" Jazz asked. "Yes, Jasper, indeed your did. You see, Poe sounds more like a surname, and I chose to call myself David Poe when I started work. Kelly did not tell you of this?" "I probably just forgot. Anyway, we have bigger problems, Kelly was arrested as a suspect in the Chinese Zodiac Murders."
Chapter 5 MEETING
Poe took his leave form his office duties early to keep Jazz company, and maybe help her come up with a plan to find the real killer. When Jazz told him that Kelly thought that the killer might be his lookalike, and that through a friend of a victim, they had traced the killer to a tattoo shop, Poe said, "He must! I saw Mister Kelly's doppelganger, as he calls it, close to Taboo Tattoo Parlor. I am certain that if Kelly says the killer is the lookalike, then he must work there."
"You there! Don't I know you from somewhere? Doesn't matter, get me a drink." Mr. Cox said, pointing to an awkward looking redhead. The redhead appeared embarrassed to be single out, but obeyed, coming back with a run and coke in a glass, and Cox continued to be the center of attention. The awkward red headed man blended back into the crowd.
The next day, Poe, Jazz, and Charlie had a meeting at the jail with Kelly. "Poe, Jazz, don't do anything to the guy until I'm out, don't even purposely go near his place of business. Charlie, how good are you at acting?"
That night, Kevin Cox had another party that again Massy attended. It seemed the point of this party was to get as wasted as one could, but by any means, crack, booze, whatever, until all party goers seemed to do nothing but sit and laugh. This seemed a total waste of time, he wasn't going to stay at this kind of party and have his drink spiked to find himself following the Dali Lama or something, and out the doors he went. He was met there by a girl with long black hair and a nice red dress. "Think that party is too insane, like I do?" she asked. "Yeah, resorting to drugs to have fun, that isn't a very good plan. I'm surprised the cops haven't come and busted things up yet, but the night is still young." "That it is. What kinds of things to you do for fun?" "Well, that depends," Massy laughed, "but I think one of the hings I like to do is go to dance clubs. My name is Massy by the way." "I'm Charlotte, but I'm called Charlie by my friends." "Nice to meet you, Charlie. Nurr. Would you by any chance like to take a drive somewhere with me?" "I don't have anything better to do at the moment, why not?" His car was just an ordinary Ford Taurus, light gray in color. The car looked out of place with all the German and Italian cars in the driveway. She wondered if she was convincing him, she was nervous, this man had killed people and set her best friend up for it. Not to mention how eerily similar they looked, she knew the difference thought. She could smell the difference, hear the subtle differences. She could even sense he was different. Her dog half wanted to leave him alone, but she had dealt with it and put herself under control.
Chapter 6 BEFORE THE DAWN
Kelly just knew that this was the night Massy would claim a new victim, a rich businessman. Kelly knew all of this because of what Charlie could find out. He told her to become the bait for his next target and as long as she did as he asked of her, Massy wouldn't kill her. Kelly was still worried, he was putting a friend's life in someone's hands, the hands of a killer. "I'd like to take you out, but I have plans tonight, Charlie." Massy said over the phone. This was it, the night Kevin Cox would meet his end. When He arrived at the party and saw what was going on, he felt embarrassed. It was an orgy party, or a sex party at the very least, but he was willing to do almost anything to get near the sleaze, luckily it didn't seem that he was busy at the moment. "You again. How do I know you? Are you an intern or from accounting? "No, but if you show me to your bedroom, I'll tell you anything you wanna know." Massy said, unable to believe he was able to fake a flirtatious tone. Obviously the man was open to anything that night, he couldn't believe he was doing this, but at this rate he didn't care what he had to do, just so he could get what the other party goers were doing out of his head, and get close enough to his target to kill. On second thought, he wasn't that desperate, he'd just take care of the job and leave. "So what is your name?" Cox asked, "Why are you so familiar?" "My name is not important, but I'm sure you know of my more famous lookalike, Kelly Beacon." "Oh right, the author who writes about haunted mansions and aliens and that type of bullshit." he laughed, "So that's why you looked familiar." Cox suddenly moved forward toward Massy. "Erm... we have all night, nurr... Let me get us a drink first." "Sudden cold feet? Well, okay, we'll have a drink first." He knew his way around a little and when he could, avoided places where there were people. Finally, he found a little bar, mixed them drinks and went back. Massy watched as Kevin drank his drink, and didn't stop his advances, they didn't matter, the poison would soon work. It was just as he suspected, his breath soon hitched. Kevin Cox was choking. "I'm actually pretty famous too. I believe the Chinese Zodiac Killer may ring a bell with you. Well, how does it feel to know that your my newest victim, and that you won't be discovered until before dawn, maybe later?" Massy laughed. It was good that he remembered to handle the Wolfsbane carefully when making the poison from it.
Free at last, free at the expense of another death. Kevin Cox was the rooster, he supposed he could see the connection, but Kelly really didn't like how he had been used. Now more than ever, he hoped Charlie would be okay.
Chapter 7 CLOSING THE CASE
Massy was glum. That last one had been too easy, and now he was without a purpose. No target. He still saw Mandy as needed, and Charlie was a temporary relief from the stresses he had each day. She was nice, cheerful, and fun to be around, but Massy was sure he was beginning to grow tired of her. He was starting to believe it best they stopped seeing each other, until one afternoon at the beach she did the strangest thing. She chased after a frisbee thrown for a dog, repeatedly, until Massy figured it best to drag her away. She then confessed that she had dog DNA inside her due to alien interference. He then understood. Charlie and he were meant to meet, and mabe she would even be the last. He had been beginning to tire of his little game that no one else seemed to care enough about to try to stop, since about the time he had killed Lisa. His only satisfaction seemed to be that he got his hero and lookalike involved. Massy even began to wonder if Kelly was secretly involving himself somehow. If there were pawns in play and he didn't know it.
She was told to avoid taking him to her place until she was sure murder was his intent. She was doing just that. They went dancing, to the beach, someplace new each time, but one time she could just smell he was up to no good. She tried her best to hide her nervousness, and took him to a movie, and at last to her apartment. With Massy's strange behavior, she was sure if things weren't stopped soon, she would be killed, but soon Charlie noticed something had taken his attention. A photo. Massy stared at the picture of two children, one girl, one boy. The girl was obviously Charlie, but the boy a mass of red hair, freckles and a toothy grin, well, it looked like he did at that age. "Who is that? I- in that picture?" he asked, though he was sure he knew the answer. "That's me and that's my friend, Kelly Beacon. We-" "Well played. I lost, you guys got me. Go get him, I won't try to leave... Go now!"
Kelly and Jazz were about to sit down to dinner when the phone rang. It was Charlie, she was on her way. "It's hard to explain, but I'd advise bringing Poe. It's about Massy, I'll explain more when I get there!" Charlie said breathlessly. No more than ten minutes later, Charlie had arrived. She explained about how the picture in her living room had set him off, and how he seemed to have lost all desire to kill her because of it. When I started to tell how we had been friends for years, he insisted I go get you. I think he wants to talk." "I was hoping my thoughts on him were right. I knew that if he knew we knew each other, he wouldn't hurt you. The only worry I had was if he would see that photo in time. Thankfully, he did" Kelly said. They went to get Poe, at Charlie's insistence, and went to Charlie's place to hear Massy's story.
Chapter 8 MASSY'S STORY
To Charlie, it must have seemed like I hadn't moved since she last saw me. Truth was, I paced, I watched for the cops, read, looked at photo albums, anything to keep busy while I waited. To finally meet face to face with my twin born of different parents, well, there are no words for it! I hardly noticed the others when they came in. "This is Jasper, she's a doctor, and I believe you've met Poe before." Kelly said. It was hard to take my eyes off of him, but I did so to see who he was acquainting me with. "Yes, I've seen Poe before." I said. Before long, I was told to tell of my life and I did my best to tell it as best I could. I was born to slavishly devout Catholics. We would go to masses and studies and services often, but away from prying eyes, my father was abusive and my mother didn't care, she felt punishment was totally up to the man of the house to decide and no one else's business what the the punishment was. So if I was to tell her he tried to burn my hand for not taking the garbage out, she would say it wasn't her business, and ignore the issue. I was too scared to run away, and too scared to move away once I was old enough, but a few months later, on a stormy night, my parents were taken from me by an agent of death, that wasn't the first time I had encounters with the supernatural, my parents had decided it was merely dreams of demons playing tricks on me, but I swear it wasn't just as they claimed, that's why I fell in love with your books, you knew of things I had begun to believe were only delusions. I don't know what made me think to do the murders, but I didn't hurt animals or anything, I love animals. In fact, I became a vegetarian soon after my parents died. I suppose when I unwittingly helped some guy in my dorm commit suicide by giving him a couple of my prescription sleep aids, I not only saw how easy it was to kill, I saw how death could be a blessing. My friend who killed himself had been assaulted you see, he had told only a few people but I was not one of them, nurr. He couldn't live with what they had done to him. That's when I started thinking of way to get yo to see me, I thought of a few things, but death seemed more and more the way to go. I'll quit now, you've talked to me and I was beginning to bore of killing anyway, not to mention the interesting people in your life, it helps me see people in a new light, to see that there is hope. It seemed like Kelly went to talk it over with the others to see if they could trust me, or if they would involve the police. If they wanted me arrested, I suppose I would go quietly.
"So, what do you think? Is my doppelganger telling the truth?" I asked. "I'm not buying it." Jazz said. "I did not detect a lie, but some of the emotions I sensed from him could not compute with the selection programmed into my emotion grid. I do not know those emotions." Poe said. "He's probably a sociopath. Most serial killers are, that's why you couldn't detect a lie, Poe." Jazz said. "All I know for sure is he seemed to brighten the moment you arrived, it's strange." Charlie added.
Chapter 9 DISAPPEARANCE AND CONCLUSION
Against my better judgment, we called the police and had them take Massy away. There was no mention of him in the news anywhere the day after. It was so curious that I had to look into it. Not only did I find no arrest record, but I couldn't find his record for attending the college, or employment with Taboo Tattoo. I even discovered that people he killed were listed with different causes of death than were originally reported. I asked around about him different places, and no one knew him, not even his arresting officers. I was beginning to believe I had dreamed it all up, but Jazz and the others remember Massy, and I have no idea what happened. So, changing the names of the victims and killer, I published a new novel and got Massy's story out there, and a few days later got a visit from Massy himself. As he tells it, "Okay, so I was taken in a squad car, right? I thought I was imagining it, but I heard popping sounds, quiet at first, then louder. Suddenly, I was standing in the field behind my cousin's house in Summer Valley Park, one of the neighboring towns, and she and her husband are the only ones who know of my existence other that you and your friends. So, I guess that means I'm free." I guess I was sort of happy about this outcome, though Jazz was not. Massy was decided on moving in with us which Jazz only agreed to because we could watch him better.

Book Two Memories Chapter 1
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
“Happy Birthday Kelly!” Jazz, Charlie, and Poe exclaimed.
“What about me? It's my birthday too, nurr. And the happiest one I've had since I was eight.” Massy said.
“Happy birthday Massy.” Charlie and Kelly said.
He just smiled as he bit into his cake.
They had to admit, Massy with his vegetarian diet and sort of strange nonexistent existence, had an odd effect on the lives of Kelly and his friends, he now had to be included in on their adventures.
Thankfully, Massy was somehow able to get back to college and back to tattooing though it wasn't with Taboo this time. Apparently they didn't want him because he was a nobody to them.
“So, what were your parents after, naming you, Massy, do you think?” Kelly asked.
“I don't rightly know. It's not short for anything or mean anything as far as I know, but the best I figure, is that it sounds like Mass as in the type of church service they liked to attend. Too bad I wasn't the perfect son they were hoping for.
Kelly thought he'd had it bad with a mother who was never around, and his father having died a few years before, but this was a reminder that some had things tougher. The way he figured his mom was probably halfway to Ethiopia by now, it was a wonder where she always got the money for her travels when she became tired of staying in one place.
The party lasted into the night and everyone remembered back.
Chapter 2
ANNIVERSARY
Jasper vaguely remembered a “Look out!” being shouted as a flash went off. When she woke, it was a chilly evening and she remembered nothing but her first name and well, that she was a qualified doctor. It was strange, she had no ID, and that she was in some strange alleyway.
“Uh, Ma'am? Do you need help?” a man's voice called out.
“W-where am I?” she asked.
“Let's see, well, you're in an alley near my apartment building. That doesn't help much though, does it?”
He walked down to her and offered her a hand, she took it and with their combined strength, she was on her feet again.
“I'm Kelly Beacon, and you are?”
“I'm Jasper.”
“Jasper... Is that a first name, or a last name?”
“First. I honestly don't know what my parents were thinking, of course I don't know much about my past.”
“You're an amnesiac? You don't remember anything else?”
“Well, there was a blinding flash before I woke up here. Also, I don't know how I know, but I'm a qualified doctor.”
“It's hard to believe that was two years ago now.” Jazz said.
“Yeah, our anniversary.” Kelly beamed.
“It's our anniversary too, our month anniversary. One month ago you and I met face to face.” Massy said.
“Has it really been that long? Seems like longer.” Jazz frowned.
“Hey!” Massy growled, “I know what you mean by that!”
Chapter 3
ABDUCTION
It was a calm evening, Charlie had gotten up during the night to go to the bathroom. When she returned to her room, there was a light with a strange glow shining into the room. She saw the craft the light was coming from, but she noticed the light was pulling her ever closer to her window. She didn't think it was possible but it pulled her through the closed window without breaking it, and the next thing she knew, she was waking up in a cold cage, scared and with many other children like herself.
The best she could figure was that they were from all over the world.
Suddenly there were tubes in the ceiling and they were all sucked up inside them. She landed on a hard table and straps immediately hooked around her, holding her in place. If she weren't so terrified by it all, she probably would have screamed, she could hear that others were.
A light moved along her body like a picture scanner. Then technicians in suits came in to examine her.
“She is a perfect match.” a voice said.
“Worry not little one, we are altering your blood so that you may one day be able to preserve our race.” a particularly soothing male voice said. One technician lifted a helmet from his head. He was very human in appearance, one eye was light blue in color, the other was a kind light brown. The only things that stood out and showed he was different from a human were upright ears that looked like a fox's, and a bushy fox tail. It turned out their race was half human-like, half dog-like, or fox-like.
“You and I will meet again one day.” he said, and slipped his helmet back on.
She was then injected with something that spread a warm numbness throughout her body, even her hair tingled, but that didn't last long.
“The injection was just to introduce our genetic composition into your body, now this next part, the fusion process will hurt. Zurnomic rays will be shot into your body. It helps to bring about the fusion.” said another technician.
The rays were like an electric pulse, with beams that shot into her body.
Her teeth bulged into strong canine teeth, but retracted a moment later, returning to normal. Her eyesight remained the same, her sense of smell grew stronger and stayed, her nails grew out into dog claws and melted back into normal nails. Her hearing became so much clearer, a small pair of ears popped up and didn't disappeared. Her transformation was soon complete.
The fox-man who had talked to her before, led her down to another room. “You are now enough Zurnomian to help our people repopulate our planet. We will return, but only when you kits are fully matured. We will have only grown a little older. I am Nexaron, but you may call me Nex.
From this room, Charlie could see outside. They were high over her neighborhood, the flight back was a slow downward descent. They beamed her back to her room.
Chapter 4
CONSTRUCTION AND ATTACK ELMS.
Kelly was still only a struggling writer, he had published one novel previously about Bigfoot being capable of hiding until it wanted to be seen, but it wasn't selling well, even for being billed as fiction. Jazz's only client at the time was Kelly himself, so she needed a hobby.
If he hadn't been so concerned with the missing persons reports which he felt in his gut was abnormal, he might have asked Jazz what was with all of the computer parts, scrap metal, and wires she was bringing into their work space.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the city, some forty trees looking like elms crashed on earth. They were not elms, but Beltrunes, carnivorous tree aliens, all spread out throughout the city. Each were hungry, each waited for prey to come to them. An hour after Aldaire, the eldest Beltrune, was in place in a city park, a human, walking a dog, walked by and he ensnared them with his bare roots and silenced both quickly, before slicing them and shoveling them inside its split in its trunk where its mouth was. Quietly it burped up a watch, a set of keys, and the leash buckle and collar, burying them quickly.
Then calmly it sat, digesting and satisfied.
When Kelly began seeing missing pet signs, he really began to wonder about things and took a hike out away from any person or building and found a strange craft tube-like in shape, crashed out there.
“I knew it had to be something eating people and animals!” Kelly said aloud, though no one was around.
By the time he got back home, he could see the Doc was busy fusing metal, a few wires, and panels dissected from computer towers into what looked like a metallic torso.
“Be careful with that stuff Jazz, we don't want a fire in here. We've also got a problem, aliens have crash landed and I believe they're eating people and pets.”
“A meat-eater, eh?” Jazz said, “Wonder how they’re hiding?”
“I don't know, but I managed to take some paneling from bits of the crash.”
Jazz was surprised to find that from the texture it felt like strong plastic, yet was soft and almost sponge-like to the touch. Almost like human skin! With a few tweaks she could make it more skin-like and use it as skin for her robot or android... whatever a humanoid machine was called.
“I didn't get much closer, in case whatever was in that ship was still hanging around.” Kelly continued.
“Good idea, but how are we going to find out what these creatures are, and how to stop them?”
“Should I show you the crash site? Maybe you could find some clue I couldn't.”
“Yes, and I can study this paneling.”
But, knowing that going was risky, they asked Charlie along hoping she might be able to sense danger, besides, the common thought of strength in numbers.
The three walked around the wreckage and Charlie sniffed the air.
“It smells of some kind of decay. Plant decay? It's mostly coming from over there.” Charlie said. Pointing toward the broken ship.
Not sensing any danger, they ventured closer to the craft, Jasper picked up a stray branch.
“Ouch! It cut me!” she said and set about bandaging her slightly bleeding hand.
An elm branch did that?” Kelly asked, “Now I’m really concerned here.”
Just inside the opening, they could see a few uprooted elms that were beginning to rot.
“These must be alien trees!” Kelly said.
Charlie sidestepped dead trees and investigated the interior further.
“Are you sure you should be doing that? It could be dangerous!” Jasper exclaimed.
“Relax, it's not like this thing can take off, punched full of holes like it is.” Kelly laughed going inside.
“Okay, if you get hurt, don’t say I didn't warn you.” she said and stayed on the outside and frowned in at them.
Charlie bumped a button and the inside lit up, the engines made no noise, but all three could feel vibrations from it. “Awesome!” Kelly laughed.
“You guys should get out of there.” Jazz warned again.
Kelly decided another button looked interesting and pushed it. The paneling on the outside seemed to harden up and get thicker.
“Whoa! It must act as a shield of some sort. It'll be interesting to examine this material further.” Jazz said.
“Now she's gung-ho.” Kelly laughed again. He pushed the button again and the shield shut down, and after about ten minutes of button pushing, they shut the craft back off, gathered more panels, and left for home, safe and sound.
Kelly decided to check up on the missing persons and animals reports to possibly figure out how much time the alien trees had been around. It seemed they had crashed about a week ago, and many had moved each day. How many had survived the crash was still unknown, but if he had to guess, he'd have said the craft could hold up to fifty of the creatures, while Jazz was running her tests on the panel skin.
“So, the question now is, how do we go about killing these things?” Kelly asked.
Caanar, another Beltrune, sat waiting for something to come along, the earth birds had been tasty snacks, but it was ready for something bigger to eat.
“Are you sure it's back here?” Kelly asked.
“Don't you trust me?” Charlie shot back.
“Okay, okay, sheesh.”
Caanar shot a root out at one of the humans.
Kelly suddenly sailed through the air, grabbed by his ankle.
“Hey, put me down!” Kelly yelled.
“Why should I listen to you? You're nothing but food, Meatsack.”
“When I said, 'Put me down,' I didn't mean insult me, sheesh. You aliens seem to have a way of making a guy feel lesser.
“Let go of him or I'l make you wish you never sprouted!” Charlie snarled. She readied the flame gun and aimed at its upper branches.
“I don't negotiate with food!” the tree hissed.
Charlie pulled the trigger and the treetop was ablaze.
Caanar dropped Kelly and beat her branches to put the fire out. Kelly hesitantly joined Charlie, he had hoped to talk it out, but it clearly thought of them as food and nothing more. He figured others probably tried too.
“That's one down.” Kelly frowned, it still wouldn't bring back those she killed or the ones her friends ate.
“Caanar has been destroyed.” Aldaire said, as if the others couldn’t detect that for themselves.
Obviously satisfied with what she had learned from the panels, Jasper continued with the building of her android, adding an arm. Kelly and Charlie came home looking beat up and wore out.
“What happened to you guys?!” she said when she had looked up from her work.
“Those damn trees, that's what!” Charlie growled.
“We managed to kill three of them, and I got slammed around a lot, but I think we learned how far they can reach.” Kelly said. Jazz cleaned their cuts and gave hem a full check over, making sure they hadn't broken anything.
“Make sure you bring me next time.” she replied.
Then she quickly set out to see if the arm she constructed worked using an electroshock wand, she was able to test the arm, move it, it worked!
“Wow Jazz! Sure you weren't a scientist before you lost your memory?” Kelly asked amazed.
“Hmm...” was her response, as if she never considered it.
“Those glorified cattle are getting wise to us somehow. We have to do something. We can't let them just pick us off.” one of the Beltrunes yelled to its friends.
“But how? The ones who killed our friends have shown us no weaknesses yet.”
“We wait, they will reveal it.”
In the Beacon household, Kelly lie asleep on the couch. Charlie took up residence on the floor by Kelly's feet, and Jazz slept in an arm chair. All three deep asleep. It had been one of those nights.
Kelly moaned, the light of the sun was too bright, even from behind his closed eyelids, but the smell of breakfast was gently pulling the sleep from him.
If Jazz was the one cooking, for once she wasn't burning it. At that thought, he sat up and joined his friends.
“Good afternoon sleepy.” Jazz said. ”I cooked.” Charlie said. “We should hurry and eat, then go on the trail tracking those things again.”
They did just that, Jasper going out with them.
This time they managed to kill five in a day, but not without seeing the end of a meal of one tree dining on a person they were too late to save.
The three were sure that would be in their nightmares for the rest of their days.
When they got back to the apartment, Jazz quickly set about looking through her junk to find the other arm of the android. Tiredly she set to work.
“So, I figure there were 40 of them not including the ones that died in the crash. We're down to about 30 now. Think we should step it up? The more we get rid of, the closer we are to ending this.” Kelly said.
“I can't think about that right now. I have to leave.” Charlie moaned. He couldn’t blame her, she had a job and was moving into her own place, away from roommates, so they said their goodbyes.
“Our food is fighting and winning, we must do something.”
“I encourage everyone to move to one location, move toward me, we can fight together against the humans who would kill us. Move under the cover of night.” Aldaire said, spreading calm throughout his people.
Charlie and Kelly moved out alone while Jazz stayed behind and worked on the android.
Despite some of the setbacks, like hostages taken, it was a pretty successful mission, eliminating 15 meat-eating trees.
“Is it just me, or did these trees seem to have a harder time moving around?” Kelly asked.
“Could be your imagination.” Charlie said.
Charlie went back to her place, and Kelly returned to his, while the doctor worked all night on the android. He was complete, save for not a hair on his head and no artificial nails, by the time Kelly was up in the morning.
The four went tree hunting as soon as they were ready to go.
“My guess is that because of their killing pattern, they are all gathered in the park in the center of the city.” Kelly said.
“Data says with 98% accuracy that Mister Kelly is indeed correct with his estimates.” said the android that Jasper had come to call Poe, after the writer. He still had a monotonous voice of a machine.
They headed toward the middle of the city, there, toward the entrance to the park, they could see many elms. Kelly didn't think there were so many elms in this park before. In fact, he was pretty certain that the tree in the very center of the park hadn't been an elm, but was now.
In silence, the four moved into the park but all stayed close by each other.
They could hear creaking and snapping sounds as alien roots shot out, the trees were in fact hardening and moving slower. They were now able to dodge them.
“Amazing! This must be how we got our elms! Our elms are distant relations to them, maybe?” Kelly exclaimed.
“Somehow I don't think now is the time to be thinking about such things.” Jazz said.
One managed to pluck Poe from the ground, but the android stayed motionless.
“What's this creature is up to?” one channeled to Aldaire.
Suddenly it seemed as if the “skin” on Poe was bloating up and hardening. Aldaire's roots were the first to petrify, and it spread. He dropped Poe as he writhed what parts of him hadn't completely hardened.
“Aldaire! He's in pain! What did you monsters do to him?” one tree couldn't help yelling out loud.
It wasn't long before the center tree was completely hard and blackened, and suddenly it burst into ash, like you'd expect of a vampire killed on the Blade movies. Charlie, the doc, and I were amazed. It wasn't long at all before the others started showing signs. Poe simply said, “I had knowledge of how to destroy them with their own technology. When their own shields are on, if they were to come in contact by their roots, it acts as a sort of disease that only harms their kind.”
Later we destroyed any evidence of their crash, ship and all.
Chapter 5
PARANORMAL PARANOIA
It was his birthday, or had it passed there too? I decided to call him anyway.
“Hello?”
“Kelly?”
“Uh, no. I'll go get him, nurr.”
“Hello?”
“Kelly, who was that? He sounds like you.”
“Ah Mom... That's not all you called to talk about, is it?”
“I wanted to wish you a happy birthday, but seriously who was that?”
“My new roommate. He also happens to be my doppelganger.”
My poor son, drawn to creatures and things from beyond, just like his mother.
That's one reason I had to leave him and his father. It started for me the summer before my freshman year at college I had moved on my own to America from the UK, my home, and met his father who was two years ahead of me. I had always attracted them before, but Dan had encouraged me to seek them too. It didn't get dangerous for me until we got out of college. I had always hoped Dan and I would marry one day, but I suppose that it was safer we hadn't. We still had Kelly, and ended up in love.
Anyway, because according to “It,” whatever it is, I'm still not certain, It thought I was too dangerous, coming closer to learning something no human should know. So, I was beginning to be followed by creatures in league with it.
The imps burned down one of the houses we lived in together and we had to move.
There was one time and only once that I met It. It looked like a normal person except for it had really pale skin, and no face. It was about average male height, thin build, and wore casual clothes, the only unusual thing about what It wore was a hooded coat that almost looked like a ceremonial robe of sorts.
“Cynthia Slayer.” It somehow said, “I see my imps didn't harm you. That's a shame.” The voice of It was like that of a man. I have no earthly idea how It could speak to me without a face, but I was a bit frightened.
“Frightened? Good. You might want to lay off finding Us, you might learn something that will kill you.” he said again.
“W- w- what a- are you?” I asked, finding my voice.
“Something ancient. Something that can't be killed.” he smiled (though I'm gobsmacked at how a faceless creature could, but It seemed to.) “I believe you may have heard of my cousin who is tall, slim and makes people disappear, or my brother from your homeland that drains his victims dry.”
I had heard stories in England of a strange time when kids cut through a cemetery on the way to school. The headmaster sent some off home sick, the ones that were worst off anyhow. It was an unsolved epidemic, the police searched the grounds of the graveyard every night as soon as one of the boys explained of the shortcut they all took through it. And it was revealed the sickest children's blood was drained somehow. One night, a cop heard a dog yelping and walked quickly to the dog. When the officer called out to a figure, it turned with no face and disappeared. The dog died of blood-loss and the case ended unsolved. That was many years ago, I think before even my grandparents were born. I had looked the story up for myself not long after I was told of it.
As soon a the recognition just dawned on my face, It was gone with no sign of ever having been there. A part of me wondered if it actually happened.
As time went on, I didn't outwardly pursue the paranormal, but I couldn't turn back completely not since I knew vampires and sirens and mystic springs exist. I should have known that he had meant, I couldn’t even research such things. In one such event, a good friend of mine was killed, drained dry of blood without a mark on her. I knew then it was time for me to leave, but the creatures still follow me.
“So how are your friends? Did you have a big party?
“The party is still going on, and they're fine.”
“Kelly, you haven't seen any strange hooded men around, have you?”
“No, why Mom?”
“Good. I have told you about that Boogeyman before haven't I?”
“Not this again Ma, you know no one else has seen it, right?”
“Just... just be careful, okay Son?”
Chapter 6
IMAGINARY FRIENDS ARE REAL
It was a hot summer day. Too hot. Massy was going into his sixth year of life and didn't have many friends to speak of. And his parents would of course dismiss this first encounter as some kind of heat induced delusion. The truth was that it started day before little Massy had been imagining himself an ideal friend. A friend who would be there for him until he would no longer need imaginary ones, animal-like yet human enough to be able to interact with objects like he could if need be.
This friend was a Chimera of sorts, furry skin, a human-like face and head with a longer neck and a couple of giraffe-like horns that were almost covered by thick and wild hair. Hands that had strong stubby fingers, a bear-like torso, and reptilian legs and tail. It had wings that were not normally visible, and pretty much folded out only when in use.
It sort of scared little Massy, not because the creature seemed a threat at all, but because it was almost exactly as he had imagined it to be. “Hello Massy. Do you want to play?” it said with a screechy voice. It's not as bad as it may seem. It was a nice sounding screech likened sort of to a bird sound.
Massy only nodded slightly in reply.
“Race you to the slide!” it said, suddenly running toward the large slide in the overgrown patch of the lawn.
Massy's parents watched on from the patio in dismay.
“Our poor son, he's seeing things.” Mrs. Deacon cried.
“It is very hot, Dear, we'll just have to see if this continues, if it does, I'll handle things. “ Mr. Deacon promised.
The two reached the slide at the same time.
“What's your name?” Massy huffed practically out of breath.
“Well, what name do you like?”
“Mitch.”
“Whadda ya know, so happens to be my name. You're a good guesser, Kid!”
Massy was sure that the being was pulling something, he was never good at guessing. No matter, he would continue calling him Mitch anyway.
The two had their fun, sliding, swimming, and wrestling. At last, it was time to go in for the evening and Massy's parents made sure he had plenty of water with dinner which didn't help his bladder during the night. He had one of his accidents, but bedwetting would continue to be an occasional issue with Massy until he was sixteen.
On this occasion, Massy got slapped, which was a fairly light punishment to what he was used to.
The next day, it was another hot day, not as humid, but still hot, and again Mitch was around to play.
This time when they saw each other, Mitch flew in from a high tree branch. His wings folded and disappeared when he landed.
Only Massy's mother was around then to see him playing with something unseen, which she reported to her husband when he got home.
Massy was dumped in a tub of ice water like one would if they were suffering a high fever or a heat stroke. He was forced to stay there until his father saw shivers and chattering teeth.
As time passed, Mitch seemed to grow stronger, and was actually able to move things, the two also learned how to play together without his parents knowing, but when things like cookies, candies, and other objects went missing, Massy was punished and Mitch would get angry.
Finally, one day Mitch said. “You'll be going to school soon, you'll make friends there, and with your parents being the way they are, I can't stay.”
Massy was sad, he was angry, but he really couldn't see another way. They cried as they said their goodbyes, and that fall, Massy did make friends at school, though things remained imperfect at home.
Much to his surprise, Massy saw Mitch again years later with a kid only a few years younger than himself, only this time, Mitch went by the name of Sam.
Chapter 7
KELLY
Ever since he could remember, Kelly wanted to write. He didn't always see himself as a novelist, in fact he saw himself interviewing and writing down the words of some war vets, or reviewing some book or movie for a newspaper.
He always used to play interview with his action figures, parents or any friends he might have had. They moved around a lot after a fire burned down one house they lived in. His mother swore she saw imps light the fire. That's when he became interested in the paranormal. Kelly planned to interview any ghost or creature he came across. He was 8 when he got his first pair of glasses, and ten when he moved to the city he calls home now. Charlie and Kelly became fast friends when they met, and soon after, Charlie was abducted and altered. He was 12 when his mother left them, but the paranormal began welcoming him and showing themselves to him. Kelly began developing novel ideas from his interviews and soon developed his own writing style which sometimes still displayed his interview type style in his first novel and sometimes leaked into other novels. Things didn't seem like they could get happier, but they didn't last. Soon after high school graduation, Kelly's father grew ill and died. Some fast acting cancer was the ruling and Daniel Beacon was buried not even a year after being diagnosed.
Chapter 8
PROJECT K.O.K.O.R O.
“How are the adjustments treating you, Poe?”
“I am doing well, Jasper. I felt anger for the first time yesterday when a man in a car almost ran me down because he was talking on a phone while driving.”
“What did you do about it?”
“I waited until he stopped, and walked the rest of the way across. I was still upset, but did nothing further and let it go. Was that good?”
“Yes, Poe. You don't want to get so angry that you'll hurt someone. Even humans have trouble with that emotion sometimes.”
This was it, K.O.K.O.R.O. was so far a success. After all of my research in both the realms of science fiction, and real robotics, I had found a way to make emotion chips that really worked. I was going to slowly make a chip for each emotion and slide it into place in a plate I had made for such a thing. Still, such a task as teaching him love and emotions of which are a combination of certain emotions, (boredom would probably be a hard one to teach too.) it wouldn’t be easy. At least he knew how to detect lies by way of drops and rises in blood pressure and heart rate. A trait Poe picked up on his own. Some things were a mystery and miracle with him.
How to explain these emotions I have no words for? How does one explain to creatures who have never known emotions? I had only known what anger was by definition. Such “feelings” are strange to me.
I am indeed thankful for my creation, though I may not understand all that I am to learn in this existence, I do wish to learn.
This was what our visits were usually like, a checkup of what I have learned, maybe a new emotion chip, and sometimes an outing to some nature scene, a visit to a little care, or some showing of a play or movie.
On my own, I sometimes retrace those steps to try to understand what emotion she was trying to teach me if any and I go to work and change when I need it.
Poe really is a miracle, to think building him started as a hobby, now he's a life time project. I haven't figured out how to work it so he can eat yet, but I'm hoping when I do have that figured, that food and drink will be broken down to help power his cell.
I find it strange that I was able to do this, I'm just a medical doctor, well... If my only vague memory of my past can be trusted that is.
Chapter 9
DISCOVERY
I posted my stuff on blogs, in conspiracy and supernatural magazines, different publishers, got many rejection letters, but I continued to try. I was in the middle of writing my second book when I got the call from a publisher.
They wanted to publish me, but they wanted me to change a few things such as changing the story to fiction, he just couldn’t believe me that I would sit down and talk to Bigfoot, he also wanted the name of the city to be different and the other human characters names changed in case they hadn't wanted to be involved with the book. But I would be contracted to them, a fairly new publisher in my own state!
They put copies of my book in stores across the county, but my first book didn't make much profit, it must have shown my rookie mistakes of editing and style.
When I finished my second book, the book about the alien trees, I'd like to think I improved some, and it sold a little better. I had made it!
I was just starting college. I had no idea what to major in, but I knew it was an excuse to get away from the parents. I honestly don't know how I got in, when I hadn't made any scholarships. But anyway, I had gone to one of the town bookstores to look for something to read. My eyes fell on a couple of books by someone local. Some strange stuff about aliens and Bigfoot and ghosts.
I skimmed through the books and found them interesting, deciding to buy two copies, or two of the three books. But it wasn't for a while that I saw on and inside cover a picture of the author. He looked like me, but with glasses. From then on I would find fake glasses with similar frames to whatsoever Kelly wore in each new book. The other copies I bought that first day went to my first loves as they like paranormal stuff too.
Chapter 10
END TRANSMISSION
“I promise Mom, I'll be careful.” Kelly said into the phone. Each person was different, a mom who saw things as being out to get her, a son who writes about his strange life, a woman who wants to regain her past, a machine who wants to feel, a woman who was forced to change, and a man who despite his past, wanted to be known. What would their futures hold?
“Yeah, Okay. You be careful too. Goodbye.”
And so ends the transmission between mother and son.
The birthday party had games further into the night. And as they partied, Cynthia got ready to travel to a mystic spring said to purify one's very soul from illness of most kinds of nature.
At last, before the glow of the morning light, the party was partied out, and Cynthia was taken by car to her hopeful destination.
