When Leslea Newman released her landmark children's book, Heather Has Two Mommies, about non-traditional families in 1989, it sparked a national uproar.
But what if Heather had three mommies? Or two mommies and a daddy? Or two mommies and two daddies?
Could any of those family situations be legal?
That's the question being raised by California State Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) in a new bill that would eliminate the rule stating only two people can be legally be considered the parents of any one child.

The decision that a child should legally have more than two parents is one that will ultimately be made by the courts, and the bill instructs that it should be done only if it is in "the best interest of the child."

While it may not be specifically aimed at poly relationships, it certainly opens up doors if this is passed, does it not?
Thoughts? Opinions?
I'm hoping it passes and does whatever legal things it has to do to make such a thing legal there, then Canada takes it as a hint. I personally would love to be legally considered a part of the children's upbringing in my relationship no matter if I birth them or are married to one of the parents or not. It would be great to provide the children with the insurances and such that are provided through employers for families even though you're not biologically their mother or father. I don't see any downsides to this beyond some possible custody issues (it's bound to happen sometime unfortunately).
