The War of Spirits - 1147
5/26/12 - 5/27/12
Current Score CRAB - 73 gold, 12.0 glory. MANTIS - 42 gold, 6.5 glory. LION - 35 gold, 6.0 glory. PHOENIX - 35 gold, 5.0 glory. DRAGON - 29 gold, 4.0 glory.
--------------------
The Lion came into a conflict; the Spirits were a major problem, but now, so was the Crab. Their ambition had grown unchecked, and in their weakened state, there was no way they could fend off both opponents.
That means negotiations. The Crab were the more likely of the two enemies to see reason, so Ikoma Shiratoshi sent his best man; as it were, this man was NOT of the Lion, so it was an awkward arrangement for Shiratoshi's men.
Still, this contact had proven reliable over the years, making many excursions that weakened the resolve of the Spirit Armies, with a few carefully selected words. There was little choice BUT to rely on him this day. Sending him off, they waited for the results while the Lion prepared for further attacks against the Spirits.
Before the Crab attacked, they were kind enough to return to the Lion the beaten, broken shell of the messenger. The messenger was NOT shot, but the old saying says nothing about bludgeoning with tetsubos.
Their fury for the Lion's dishonorable tactics forced the weakened Clan out of an imperial region, showing them what it truly means to cross the Crab.
--------------------
Elsewhere in the Empire, another Clan was employing the Bayushi to aid their mission; however, the Dragon had been allies with the Scorpion for some time, so it was less awkward of an arrangement.
The Scorpion had many talents that could be exploited. One of them was that they excelled at making distractions. The Spirit Armies were very organized, but Bayushi Kanko promised the Dragon envoy that he would take care of it. Bidding farewell, he rode off with the final message: Wait one week to the hour, then attack.
Lo and behold, when the Dragon DID engage the enemy, they were extremely disorganized, as if they were without any leadership whatsoever. The Dragon weren't much on tactical warfare, but their army had little difficulty sweeping into the spirits and clearing them out of Unicorn lands.
--------------------
The Mantis had gotten word of the Crab's engagement against the Lion. Being an opportunistic clan already, they saw little issue with choosing that moment to attack the Crab, trying to take back some of the land they desired. What are the odds of finding Crabs in the ocean? I mean really.
The blockade the Mantis ran into several miles from shore proved them wrong. Their scouts had indicated that the province was barely defended, so if they could only get by that blockade, they could seize it! Enchanting themselves and their vessels with the protective kami of earth, they attempted to run the blockade.
The Crab had skeletal crews on the vessels, expecting such a tactic. As the Mantis tried to zip by on their kobunes, the Crab simply used the vessels they had under their command as roadblocks (seablocks?). Each one would crash into the Kobunes, heavily damaging them at the cost of sinking themselves.
A kamikaze gambit, but one that worked. Not all Mantis ships were damaged, due to some protective wards, but enough of them were where the rest had to abandon the mission to rescue their clanmates. When they had returned home, there was extra insult to injury upon seeing a Crab banner waiting for them at shore.
--------------------
The Crab had bushi all over the empire now. After the insult that the Lion had given one of their commanders, the unity the Crab felt pushed them to add more insult to injury (as well as injury to injury). The Lion had suffered great losses against the Spirit armies, and were currently homeless.
Crossing the Spine of the World Mountains, the Crab would target the Matsu's home, Shiro Matsu. It was currently occupied by returned Spirits, mostly Lion who did not want to stay dead. The Crab had some Mantis that had been taken hostage work for them, and sent them ahead to warn the Spirits of their arrival. They had two choices: Surrender the castle, or surrender their lives.
Presumably, the Yoritomo were executed, but it made the Spirits quite uneasy. The Crab then took up position at the pass's entrance and simply camped out a few days, the enemy growing paranoid and weary. When they were foolish enough to open the gates to engage them, the Crab decided to strike then, and as with many other battles during this war, they crushed the enemy beneath their boots.
