[A] and [B] were inseparable their entire lives. Everyone knew who they were and what was going to happen between them, before either of them knew themselves. Although high school did mess up their relationship, a shadow of a feeling still remains, deep down inside them in a place neither of them realize exist.

[A], after high school, went to college in France. Paris, the city of romance, was her first and only choice, seeing as she knew from the off that she needed to get as emotionally detached from [B] as possible. In her mind, the only way to do that was to find other men to take [B]'s place in her heart. It didn't quite work, at first, but soon she started to forget about [B], and her life seemed to go back to normal... as normal as an American living in France could get, that is. Now, at 28, [A] has a charming, handsome, and wealthy French boyfriend with a degree in law and a budget the size of all of Europe. Not only that, but he has a heart of gold and loves [A] with every ounce of his being. And [A] knows that.

Meanwhile, back on the home front, [B] has done quite well for himself, to say the least. With a doctorate in medicine, his successes gave him enough money to invest in a small ranch. No beau as of yet, but plenty of heart and just waiting for the right girl to come along. [B] still misses [A] a lot, but he's satisfied himself with the fact that she probably wasn't the one for him anyways, and that there is surely another girl out there even better than she. While [A] has forgotten him completely, [B] uses his memories to compare other girls to his experiences with [A]. However, now that [A]'s father is ill, he is worried that perhaps things may not go as smoothly as he knows they both want.

Name: James Kingsley
Age: 28
Pic:
Personality: James has always been an intelligent young man. He was seen as the 'Town Flirt', always goofing off, hitting on Girl A then Girl B and so on and so forth. There was only one girl who really owned his heart but she wasn't around anymore, so he became a womanizer. However, James has not forgotten who he truly is. He's loyal, caring and protective of those he loves... James knows when to be serious and when it's ok to play.
History: James was born in Chicago and loves it there. He was always in love with A but never admitted to anyone, even himself until he was 14. They were together and those were the happiest two years of his life. Then she left and he was alone. Again. James did what any man would do, he got with any girl he could to get over her... but her face was the only one he'd ever see. He did what he always said he'd do, he became a doctor and bought a small ranch outside of the city. He has an apartment in the city, but prefers his ranch... now she's coming back and he isn't sure if he could take it...

Name: Katherine Simon-DePortaux
Age: 28
Pic: (do you prefer realistic or anime?)
Personality: Katie used to be the popular girl, the one that knew everything about everyone at any given time. She had a lot of friends and was very social; however, after going to France, she became more withdrawn and conservative, quieter, and more thoughtful. She's still very friendly and comfortable around people, but there's an air of confusion about her, like she's lost or unsure about what's really going on. Her heart is very set on her boyfriend, though, and she's generally very determined and steadfast about what she wants. She has completely forgotten about what used to be with James.
History: Katie was born in Chicago, but was very deeply rooted in her French heritage ever since she was a young girl. Fluent in both languages, she became very popular very quickly once she started school, especially in the male population. Of course, there was only ever one for her, and everyone knew that. She shared the heartbreak when she left, of course, but got over that quickly after meeting Grégoire ('Greg', as she so lovingly calls him), who essentially mirrored James in every way... and he was rich, too. Now, her papá has cancer, and she doesn't quite know what to do (she doesn't know that James is her father's doctor).

Tell me how you feel this weak.
Are you cursed? Are you blessed?
Are you still inside the mess?

James yawned loudly as he made his usual rounds around the hospital. He cracked his neck and turned when he heard someone call his name. A pretty young nurse ran over to him, holding a clipboard. He flashed her a flirty grin before slipping his number into her palm. The nurse giggled and smiled before walking away. He watched her for a few seconds before looking at the room number on the clipboard and walking over. He wasn't sure why, but he didn't bother looking at the name. He had no reason too.

James walked into the room and at that point opened the clipboard, "Hello. I am Dr. Kingsley and I will be your attending physic-... Mr. Deportaux. Why are you here? Is everything alright?" After receiving dumbfound looks from everyone James cleared his throat. "Oh right. Sorry." He skimmed th notes and got to the diagnoses. This... wasn't good...

Katherine Simon-DePortaux
┗━━━━━━━━━┛

It was nearing four in the morning in Paris when the phone rang in the residence of Katherine Simon-DePortaux. Groggily, the petite blond got up from underneath her warm covers and headed out into the hallway, where the phone rang loudly from its place on the wall.

"Oui...?" she asked tiredly, trying to rub the sleep out of her eyes. "Who is it?" Suddenly, her eyes jolted awake and her heart began to pound. Gripping the phone tightly, she asked in a hushed tone, "Mamà...?! Why are you calling me this early in the morning? Do you know what time it i-- no, no I didn't get your message... No, Je n'ai pas entendu*... Pourquoi, what's going on? What's going on with Papà?" She listened intently to her mother's hurried explanation, the words passing through her mind in a confusing blur. Fainting... bruises on the skin... urinary test results... hospital, doctor... When the verdict finally came, all Katie could do was blink at the air.

"Chéri, chéri are you there??" her mother asked frantically after a moment of silence. From the bedroom emerged Grégoire, equally sleepy and most likely twice as annoyed. He only gave Katie a questioning glance before heading to the kitchen for some milk.

"Mamá, I think I'll... I'll call you back..." she whispered, hanging the phone back into the cradle and pressing her back against the wall, her face stained with tears. Greg came back, and, upon seeing his girlfriend in distress, rushed to her side, his face full of worry.

"What's wrong, Mon Chér?" he asked fearfully. Katie leaned against him sadly.

"Papá has cancer," she answered quietly. "They think, they're not sure. He's in the hospital now... I have to fly in an see him, Greg. Tonight. Where is my bag?" She stood quickly, but Greg grabbed her hand.

"But dearest," he protested. "We're going to sign the deal on the house tomorrow!"

"Make it wait!" she insisted, pushing past him. "My father has cancer! I have to see him as soon as possible! Please, Grégoire! What will Papá think if I stay here when he's dying?" She pouted miserably, and Greg sighed. Reaching onto the kitchen counter, he retrieved his cellphone.

"Fine," he replied. "I'll leave my secretary a message... I'll book the flight from my phone... Katherine... I'm sor--" He was cut off when Katie kissed him on the cheek gently.

"Mercí," she replied with a smile. "Je t'aime, Grégoire**..."

The next day...

The Chicago airport was jam packed with people as Katherine pushed through the crowd in search of her mother. There! The familiar face stood out in the jovial crowd, a solemn phantom who could only offer a weak smile as the two women embraced. There was only a silent exchange, a nod, and they headed outside into the sunshine.

"Forget the bags," Katie said quietly once they got into the car. "Let's go right to the hospital, okay? I want to see papá."

[OOC: Sorry it's so long, lol. *No, I didn't hear anything... why? **I love you, Gregory]

OoC: I loved your post! Ahahaha

That night, James didn't get any sleep. For more than one reason actually, first of all his worry over Mr. DePortaux, but also because he'd brought that sexy lil nurse from work home with him and she was quite the pistol, to put it nicely...

His alarm went off but he was already in the shower, thinking of what he could do to help the older man. Mr. DePortaux had always been like a father to James, whose own father had ran off before he was born. James sighed and got changed in his jeans and black v-neck before heading to the hospital. He was too talk to the DePortaux family today to explain everything and their options. It wasn't a conversation he wanted to have for many reasons and frankly, Katherine was the last of his concern. That was when he realized she'd probably be there. James groaned in agony as he entered the hospital, earning him a few odd looks. He smiles sheepishly, apologizing to those who were staring at him then went to his office where he'd meet with the family. James, however, had never bothered to take down the old doctor's plaque(sp?) that was on his door so it read 'Dr. Simmons' and not too many people knew his profession, merely that he was doing rather well for himself. James walked into the office.

It was nice enough. Spacious, could easily fit four or five people. It had two chairs in front of his desk and a sofa against the wall behind those chairs, I case there were more people. Behind his desk hung his four degrees, including one in psychiatry and on his desk was a photo of James holding a small boy - a boy who looked very much like the good Doctor. James yawned and tapped his fingers in anticipation for when the DePortaux family would arrive.

Over the years, James appearance hadn't changed too much. He still dressed rather casual and he still had raven-black long hair. A few things were different though, he was fit - well, more than he used to be, and he had a faint tan line on his ring finger... was he ever married? It was hard to say.

The ride in the car was one of complete silence. Neither woman could look at the other, neither knew what to say to the other. It wasn't awkward; the women were simply sharing the pain, understanding each other's grief. Katie could hardly believe she was here again. It seemed like ages since she had seen either of her parents over anything other than Skype... neither of them had changed much, really, but it still seemed to Katie like a bad, bad dream.

"Mamá," Katie said quietly. "Are we almost there?" Her mother only nodded, slowly, focusing on the road. Katie glanced at herself in the side mirror. True, nothing had really changed over the years, other than her hair. She had cut it very short after moving to Paris... it was more modern, more fashionable. Her hair, once almost to her buttocks, had been chopped off and replaced with a bob the moment she set foot in France. She had grown much slimmer, too, the curvature of her younger years almost gone now that she had to fit in with the lean French women. Her glasses, however, remained... although she had recently upgraded to a very chic Dolce&Gabbana frame to replace her plain black one.

Dressed in a slim-fitting black suit and tie (admittedly very boyish, but she couldn't help her taste), she blinked her large blue eyes a few times to hold back the formulating tears. She didn't know where they were going; she wasn't familiar with this part of town, but she knew it was far from home, on the other end of the city. Her immediate personal belongings clutched tightly in her hand, she took a deep breath to compose herself as her mother coasted into the parking lot.

"Try to hold it together, Katié," her mother warned. "Try not to react too badly." Katie nodded, thinking her mother meant the state of her father. Imagine her surprise, however, when they turned the corner and stood before a doctor's office.

"Doctor Simmons?" Katie asked, sounding slightly distraught as a giggly brunette in a nurse's uniform approached them. "I thought we were going to see Papá!"

"Please take a seat," the nurse said with a broad grin, eyeing the door to the office mischievously as she gestured towards the benches in the waiting area. "The Doctor will come out when he's ready." She knocked lightly on the door and announced that there were visitors outside, then disappeared in a flurry of snickers and almond-scented hand soap. Katie rolled her eyes, when suddenly she realized her mother was crying.

"Oh... Mamá..." she said gently, pulling the older woman close. "Please don't cry... I'm sure everything will be alright. If anything, we can fly Papá to the cancer hospital in Lyons... you know how good they are." Closing her eyes, she added, "Papá is very tough. I'm sure he'll make it through..."

James was lost in thought when he heard the knock in his door. He glanced up to stop his assistant telling him about the families arrival, "thank you Sarah." James stood and pulled on his coat before running his hand through his hair and taking a deep breath. He walked towards the door and looked at Mrs. DePortaux, "Mrs. DePortaux. Will you please step into my office?" He could still smell Sarah and althought it sent a slight chill down his spine he maintained his composure. "Right this way, ma'am."

Once everyone was inside, James sat at his desk and spoke softly. "first of all, I'd like to extend my services in any possible way. I know this must be a tough time for you and I am here for you any time of day." He picked up Mr. DePortaux's file and flipped it open. "I have some good and bass news. We have found the source of your husbands pain. Its a very, very rare form of cancer. Basically, over time these little metal shrapels - think of them as metal splinters, have formed in his chest and pierced his heart. The bad news is that we caught it too late. Normally we could use a treatment to remove them but somehow, his heart has actually mended with these metal shrapels. Removing them would kill him in the spot." James looked upset, sad at this. "Your husband has approximately one month to live. There is nothing we can do, aside from insure his comfort. I am so sorry ma'am."

During this entire ordeal, he hadn't even glanced at Katherine. It wasn't to be rude, he just simply didn't notice her and her mother was more important. "Do you have any questions?" He hated this part. Most patients found a way to pin it all in him, to blame him for some disease he had no control over. James just hoped she wouldn't.

Everything was silent for a moment while Katie comforted her mother. Yes, it seemed hopeless, but there was nothing that could be done now but to wait for the verdict. Perhaps it wasn't so bad... perhaps it could be fixed! It was this shard of hope that Katie clung to as the door opened, and the doctor stepped out.

At first, Katie didn't recognize him. He was much taller, fitter... and besides, she hadn't been wearing her glasses, and her eyes had been blurry with tears. He said nothing to her; only when Katie's mother stood to greet him was there any kind of interaction, and even so, it hadn't been aimed at her.

"Oh... of course, James," Mrs. DePortaux replied, wiping her eyes with a tissue that Katie had handed her, slightly dazed. This was something that she most definitely had not been expecting. But she was determined not to let this little... turn of events take any time away from hearing about her father. After all, it was him that she had flown in to deal with. Not... this. So, instead of remaining seated where she was after her mother headed inside, she followed, not even meeting James' eyes as she took a weary seat on the couch while her mother sat up front, by the desk.

While he spoke, she didn't... glare at him, exactly. He wasn't looking at her, so she took the opportunity to watch him as he vaguely explained her father's condition. It sounded serious... indeed, her father was a veteran, so his injuries were plausible. Nevertheless, it made the ultimate sentence hit that much harder, when the problem seemed so simple. He sounded so calm about it, and it was infuriating her. At his final apology, her mother burst into a heart-wrenching fit of weeping, and Katie stood abruptly.

"Like hell you're sorry," she snapped, putting her hands on her hips as her heels clicked angrily against the powder blue tiles.

"Katherine!" her mother scolded, obviously embarrassed at her daughter's sudden outburst. "Show some appreciation! You didn't even say hello! Whatever happened to common courtesy? Vous êtes une femme française; montrer quelques manières!*"

"Vous n'avez pas ennuyé pour me dire que James était le médecin de papá!**" she replied angrily. "Comment pouvez-vous me prévoir de vous montrer courtoisie quand vous ne pourriez pas faire même cela? J'ai pensé nous étions ici d'aider papá, ne pas compliquer ma vie!***" With that, she turned on her heels and stomped out. Mrs. DePortaux gasped; even though she doubted James had understood a word that had just been said, she was mortified all the same. She turned to him.

"I am so sorry," she replied, her eyes teary and her face red as she stood. "Just... give her time. I'm going to be with Richard... She knows the room. When she calms down, perhaps she will come, too." Standing, the woman walked out.

Meanwhile, Katie had disappeared around the corner. This was too much. First Papá, and now she had to see him? She couldn't bear it. There, hidden in the corner of the hallway and the bathroom, Katherine began to cry.

[OOC: Sorry for all the French, lmao xD Here's the translation: *You're a Frenchwoman; show some manners! **You didn't even bother to tell me James was Papá's doctor! ***How can I show you courtesy when you can't even do that? I thought we were here for papá, not to make my life complicated!

There were a lot of things about the young doctor that no one knew. The fact that he had learned French - for Katherine (when they were dating) was one of them. He couldn't speak the language, but he definitely understood it. He almost called Katherine an insolent child for attempting to make this about her but refrained. James merely shook his head at Mrs. DePortaux's excuse. "What yiur daughter thinks means nothing. She is not my patient, therefore she is of no importance to me. However, if her behavior continues I am afraid I will forced to remove her from the hospital." When she left, James sighed. This was going to be tough. Before he could truly think of this, his door closed and he heard the lock click. He looked up to see Sarah quickly disrobe then jump him. James smiled, "can't control yourself too much huh?" He chuckled and they had some "fun".

A while later, James was making his rounds and stepped into Mr. DePortaux's room. "Hello sir", he asked all the general questions as well as some specifically for the older male. After making sure that Mr. DePortaux was fine and not in pain, James stepped outside. Another nurse approached, this one a perky young blonde.

James flashed her a flirty grin and the two spoke for a while before he left - with her number. He checked on all his patients, making sure that they were all fine. James returned to Mr. DePortaux's room and spoke with the man, just random conversation about their lives and such. It had been a few years since James had communicated with anyone in her family. It just felt odd. James turned when he was called away. "Excuse me sir. There is someone here to see you." James immediately lost all the seriousness and beamed with pure joy. Without another word, he practically rushed out of the room. A shriek of happiness would be heard and then James' laughter.

James and small 5 year old who was there to meet him left to James' office.

Mrs. DePortaux was shocked at the reaction that James gave, and wrung her hands anxiously as she stood. "Yes, well... that would be appropriate, I guess... but... please do go easy on her. She's in shock because of this, you know? She hasn't been the same ever since..." The woman trailed off thoughtfully, her eyes distant and awkward. "Well, nevertheless, you do as you see fit with... this situation. After all... this is your practice, and you can do what you please..." She seemed detached as she waddled through the door and in the direction of her husband. On her way out, she noticed the nurse from earlier, and when the young woman disappeared inside with the tell-tale, expecting smile on her face, Mrs. DePortaux could only shake her head in disappointment. What had happened? Everything seemed to have changed since the two youths had grown apart...

Meanwhile, despite everything, the tears Katherine had held in the entire flight weren't as many as she had thought they would be. Ever since... well, ever since she had migrated to Paris, she had pretty much learned to control her emotions, to get over things quickly. She regretted yelling at James... it wasn't his fault that her father had this condition, this cancer of the heart, nor was it his decision that the elderly man had only a month left to live. Suddenly, something began to vibrate in her back pocket. It was her phone. Greg was calling.

"Oui, Greg," she said into the phone, wiping away her tears and cleaning her glasses on her white blouse. "I'm sorry... I was about to call you... yes, it really is cancer, of the heart. The doctor said that Papá only has about a month left to live." She blinked at the question she knew he would ask. "Yes... I think I will stay here for that month, I must. I'm sorry." She ducked into the bathroom and began to rinse her hands and her face to refresh herself, pinning the phone between her ear and her shoulder as she wiped the smeared makeup off of her face. "I will be staying with my parents while I'm here, so you don't have to worry about a hotel... no, I don't need any money, thank you." She dried her hands on the towel and stepped out into the hallway, oblivious to the child-like laughter coming down the hall.

"I know... please come visit me if you can get time off of work, I really need you here," she continued as she began walking down the hall, rummaging through her purse. Her eyes turned away, she couldn't see James (and his plus one) coming in the opposite direction. Taking a deep breath as new tears began to form at Greg's reassuring words, she said, "Yes, I love you, too, so much... I miss you already, my heart is breaking, chéri. Oui, je t'aime, I love you. Bye, my love. Bye." Putting her phone back into her bag as she produced a lipgloss, she was startled to see James with a child, motioning to walk past her.

"Wait...!" she said, reaching out to stop him. In her hand was the makeup that James would recognize as her favorite cherry lip balm, back from when they were still young, reordered a thousand times since then. Despite her gesture, however, her eyes were still icy as she said, "I'm very sorry for acting so inappropriately before. I was... I was upset at the verdict, and I know it's not your fault that... that this happened." She glanced at the little boy who was looking at her with a youthful curiosity, and suddenly, she warmed up . Smiling down at him, she said, "Hello there, young one. On a little rampage with daddy, are we? My, my, aren't you handsome?"

She only assumed James was the father, there was no way she could no otherwise, and quite frankly, she didn't care. She reached into her purse and pulled out a piece of French chocolàt, which she handed to the little one before looking back at James. "I'm going to see my father," she said coldly before turning on her heels and going in the direction from where James had come. She found the room quickly, and was relieved to see her father looking normal, at least.

"Daddy!" she exclaimed, rushing to his bedside.

"Princess!" he replied loudly, a broad, American grin on his face. "Come to see me die, eh? Did you bring your boyfriend? He still needs my blessing before he marries you, and besides," the man added with a grin. "Still need me a lawyer to make my will, haha!"

"Oh, daddy, you shouldn't joke like that," Katie answered sternly as her mother looked on her sudden Chicago accent with a disapproving frown. "You know this is serious."

"Oh, princess," the man answered reassuringly. "If I can't laugh, what else can I do? Oh, and did ya see Jimmy yet? Gotta say, with all those cute little nurses around, he's grown up to be quite the pim--"

"Richard!" Mrs. DePortaux interjected. "Be sensitive, for once in your life!"

"It's fine, Mamá," Katie answered casually. "It... doesn't matter anymore. What matters now is Papá and being with him in this sad time."

"Oh come on!" the man protested, grabbing his cane with one hand and swinging his legs out from under the covers. "You act like I'm already dead! Let's go out into the yard, eh? Get some air." He smiled at Katie. "And then you can tell me all about what my grandkids are gonna look like in a couple of years."

James and the young boy walked into the office and took their respective seats. The boy eyed the chocolate before placing it on the desk. "Daddy? Who was that girl?" James looked at his son, "someone I used to know. Don't worry about it Alu. Now, tell me about your day."

Alu smiled happily at James, and once more, James was reminded just how much the young boy resembled him. It was like looking in a mirror to the past - except for Alu's eyes. Those were an emerald green, like his mother. The little boy went off into a rant that James had trouble understanding but knew enough that he understood the jist of it. When Alu continously mentioned a young girl's name James smiled, "do you like her?" Alu blushed furiously and looked down, which caused the older man to laugh. "You're only 5 Alu and you like a girl... how adorable." Alu glared at his father, "did you ever like anyone daddy? Aside from mommy?" James rested his head on his hand and nodded slowly. "Once. I was in love with her, I thought we'd always be together." The little boy was growing more and more curious, "what happened daddy?" James shrugged, "things change. People change. I am not the same man I was then Alu and it's because I have you. Something I am thankful for every day. Now, eat your chocolate."

Alu blushed and lowered his head, "im saving it for Amber...", that made James grin. "That her name?" Alu nodded vigorously and James chuckled. "You're just like me. You hungry?" Alu nodded and James stood, picking up his son and taking him out. He looked over at Sarah, who surprisingly enough behaved around the child. "I'll be back in an hour." Sarah nodded and James left, stepping out into the street.

James and Alu went to the local McDonald's, James didn't like the food but Alu enjoyed it so he put up with it. James ate french fries, listening to his son tell him about his weekend with his mother and how they had gone to the zoo and they got ice cream and all sorts of things. James pictured Alu's mother and was glad that she was treating the young boy wonderfully, not that James had any doubt in his mind she wouldn't. Tanya had always loved Alu and would never hurt him. That, James was certain of. The reason for the seperation was a simple one - James wasn't as emotionall available as Tanya would have liked...
