Some people are freaking out because a few characters who weren't meant to be white in the first place are black. OMG, huge surprize there ~sarcasm~ What bothers me the most is the people who said they didn't mourn Rue's death because she was black. These people seem like possible murderers to me, no joke. Who else is pissed off at these "fans"?
Long Live Rue

I've heard about that too. Its just people being stupid. They were mad that Thresh, Rue and Cinna were black. NEWS FLASH: Two of those characters were mentioned in the book as being dark skinned. The other wasn't described as being black or white. Now, I myself didn't imagine Cinna as being black but I didn't really care as long as the actor did a good job at portraying the character and I thought he was great. I cried when Rue died and I find it revolting that others didn't just because of her skin color. Come on people, I thought we were better than this. I am very disappointed with those so called 'fans' and hope that they realize how stupid they're being about all of this.

I saw tht every where and it mentions specifically in the book twice about Rue's color(if I remember correctly)...once when Katniss sees her the first time? <----iffy on tht and second when the muttations of the dog/tributes, Katniss says in her mind, "And worst of all, the smallest mutt, with DARK glossy fur, huge BROWN eyes and a collar that reads 11 in woven straw. Teeth bared in hatred. Rue..." now I got tht straight from the book...and most ppl with dark hair and brown eyes r black...except me! I imagined Cinna at least being dark like mixed so tht's ok too. I just don't remember where it said Thresh was black, but idc, I'm not racist like other ppl out there! ppl calm down! It's a black or mixed person, looking at them is not gonna kill you! we are not in the 1800s anymore

That's silly. I always pictured Rue black anyways. Didn't it say she had Dark tan skin in the book because I remember it that way?

I dont understand y people are making a big deal over Rue being black.... in the book she was discribed as haveing dark skin.... there is no reason people are mad about her being black!

I'm absolutely upset that people are upset that Rue is portrayed by an African American actress. Rue's death WAS sad regardless of her race. It really goes to show how much racism in America hasn't changed all that much. I myself imagined Cinna to be partially (maybe half or a quarter) Asian.

Yeah I don't understand that at all. I mean personally as I read it I didn't imagine her as specifically black but I did imagine her as dark skinned from days in the sun and I mean when I found out the actress playing her would be African American I just thought 'hey that's a really good idea' the same with Thresh and Cinna. I liked it and cried when Rue died. I never have understood racism.

If I'm not mistaken most of the citizens of District 11 are African American I think and Cinna I forgot but Lenny Kravitz was the perfect Cinna!

Yeah I imagined Rue as African American in the book. Katniss said she was dark skinned.
And also at the part of the interviews, Katniss describes him as dark skinned, like Rue.
But I myself imagined Cinna as similar looking to Adam Lavine. But I wasn't mad he was African American in the movie.

o.o Link? I never even heard about this. If anything though, it just proves what we already know: racist people are illiterate... Rue is exactly how she was described in the book. Same with Thresh. So... People are idiots. :/
Cinna and Portia surprised me. For whatever reason, I pictured them both as white. BUT Katniss is described in the book as having olive skin and grey eyes. So is Haymitch, and he's also supposed to have dark hair. So... where's that protest? Anyway, casting was done really well over all, and people are morons.
@BjordahlKathryn1991: Yeah, the series says that about District 11 several times. Same with District 11 tributes from other games.

I didn't even know about this until reading this thread! I always knew that Rue was supposed to be dark skinned so I didn't have a problem with it. I'm pretty sure that District 11 is full of African Americans after what I saw in the movie. I honestly don't understand why people are freaking out. It actually upsets me that people don't like Rue just because of the colour of her skin. It's really not a big deal after all. In fact, it's just plain out silly! Get over it people! There is nothing wrong with dark skinned people. I am actually rereading the Hunger Games and it even says that Rue is african american so they actually cast her quite well!
