DESCRIPTION
Kojiro is of average height for a Rokugani. Like most of his clansmen, he has black hair and brown eyes. He wears a black silken mask over his head (like the Dread Pirate Roberts) None of his features stand out particularly, and he has a minute tattoo on his arm that reads "Husband of Bayushi Koyuki."- it is the only way Koyuki can recognize him. He looks like his age (which is 22)

Strangely enough, Koyuki can recognize almost anyone who is not him, due to the fact that they are more recognizable in some way than Kojiro. A member of the Shosuro acting troupe was fascinated by this and tried to impersonate Kojiro three times. The first time, Koyuki claimed that his hair was a length too long. The second, his walking was too rhythmic. The final time the Shosuro actor attempted this, he was told that his scent was too clean to be Kojiro. Koyuki has never had to check anyone but Kojiro for the tattoo.

Kojiro's armor is black trimmed with red, the opposite of most Scorpion schemes, but popular amongst those who are normally scouts. His Kabuto has a half mask attached to it and has two pincers rising from the brow.


BACKGROUND
Place of Birth: Yasuki Shiki, Junkin Province, Crab Lands
Current Residence: Trail's Respite Village, Hizoku Province, Scorpion Lands

Kojiro was born near Yasuki Shiki in Junkin province during the Scorpion Exile. His father, Jiro sent his mother, Ikue to live with her mother, Yasuki Minako, as he did not want to endanger her or their child in the exile, nor did he want his child to grow up as a hostage to the Crane. Thus, Kojiro spent the first three years of his life as a Crab. When Jiro returned to Rokugan with the rest of the Scorpion Clan, he reunited with Ikue and Kojiro and brought them to Trail's Respite Village in Hizoku province. Kojiro grew up as a Scorpion, although he did visit his grandmother now and again as he grew older.

Like his father, Kojiro was trained in the Bayushi Bushi School. While he was attending the facilities, word was leaked of his Yasuki heritage, earning Kojiro ill will amongst the contingent of Crane students at the school who adhered to the ancient grudge held against that family. Kojiro won handily against his peers, but several of their older brothers came to the school to restore honor by dueling Kojiro, putting the Kakita techniques on display for the whole academy. After Kojiro's Gempukku, he was married to Bayushi Koyuki, a daughter of a prominant citizen of Ryoko Owari Toshi who owned a profitable shipping concern.

During the War of Spirits, Kojiro was assigned to be the yojimbo for his great uncle, Soshi Taisen. Taisen was a hot headed, argumentative old shugenja who delighted in getting his younger relation in trouble and thus further increasing his dueling skills. Fortunately, Kojiro's skills as an archer and a scout were needed elsewhere and he was eventually replaced.

Notable People in Kojiro's Life:

Yogo Sanjuro: Sanjuro has recently replaced Masamune as the oldest relative that Kojiro is involved with. During his life, Sanjuro betrayed his father and took a position as an Emerald Legionnaire. He served dutifully and loyally during his lifetime and was rewarded with his daughter's marriage into the Asako family. The Asako family tried to gain a measure of revenge for this insult by arranging for this granddaughter to be married into a Bayushi family, but this came to nothing as he had broken his curse and his descendents were free of it.


Bayushi Masamune: The oldest, is Kojiro's great grandfather. He got Lost when attempting to retrieve an artifact from an agent of the Shadowlands. He also supposedly teased part of a secret from his Asako relatives, enraging the kami of the water against his line.

Soshi Taisen: Kojiro's grand uncle. Taisen admired his Matsu father and took his name upon gempukku. Hot headed and aggressive in the extreme, Taisen did his best to make the burning lands, the burning lands. Things were worse after he learned that his son decided to marry into the Asahina family and took their name.

Yasuki Minako: Kojiro's grandmother. After the death of her husband and son during that fateful expedition, Minako has withdrawn from the world to a point. She still helps teach future Yasuki about the art of the deal and the like and is often visited by her granddaughter Arisa.

Bayushi Jiro: Kojiro's father. Jiro has long served as a scout in the Scorpion armies and has somehow managed to survive the most turbulent events of the past decades. Mostly due to not being tremendously noteable. He now teaches in the Bayushi school.

Bayushi Ikue: Kojiro's mother and Minako's daughter. The mother of three was born to the Crab clan and married off to Jiro to cement a profitable alliance between the two families. Ikue didn't expect her fortune to change so greatly, but she has weathered the decades well. Now her time is mostly spent managing her eldest son's wife, Koyuki.

Bayushi Koyuki: Kojiro's wife. Koyuki was born to a rich Bayushi father and a Daidoji mother in Ryoko Owari with key dealings on the River of Gold twenty five years ago. Koyuki expected to be married to a man of promise and ability. Instead, she got Kojiro. With little recourse, Koyuki has striven to motivate Kojiro into developing higher ambitions for himself. She recently gave birth to the couple's first child, Kentaro. Koyuki is also an author of some ability and a tremendous gossip. This may explain why she is far, far away from Ryoko Owari right now.

Bayushi Kentaro: Kojiro's son. Kojiro has yet to meet Kentaro, but he hopes to rectify that soon!

Yoritomo Rin: Kojiro's first love. They met in the Yogo libraries while Kojiro was researching information on how to deal with Masamune. A marriage was arranged between the two as they recieved permission to ignore the long standing rule against Yogo family members marrying within the clan. Unfortunately, the needs of diplomacy reared their heads and the contract was dissolved when Rin volunteered to marry a minor Yoritomo lord in order to gain allies for the Clan in the Mantis' courts.

Utaku Kazuhiko: Kojiro's younger brother. Kazuhiko possesses many of the same skills as his brother. Due to Koyuki's abilities, Kazuhiko found himself married to a minor Utaku of some influence not long after Kojiro's marriage. Kazuhiko has attended the Ide Duelist School.

Utaku Kirano: Kojiro's sister in law. Lamed in an accident during her youth, Kirano attended the Ikoma Tactician school due to the fact that she can no longer ride a horse in combat. Deeply cares about Kazuhiko, is friendly with Kojiro, and loathes Koyuki.

Yasuki Arisa: Kojiro's sister. Arisa found herself married, with Koyuki's aid, to a distant cousin in an attempt to rekindle the alliance that brought prosperity to both sides. Arisa's skill in using her family's native blandness has been a blessing in the Yasuki Courtier school.

Yasuki Inomoto: Kojiro's brother in law and distant cousin. A Yasuki Taskmaster, Inomoto has little of the business acumen or wealth of his relatives. Inomoto also indulges in habits and attitudes that are more common with the Hida family than with the Yasuki family.

Yasuki Gintaro: Arisa and Inomoto's son. A one year old.

Synopsis: The story of one Phoenix and her affairs with several Crabs set before and after the Day of Thunder. Long story short, the Crabs end up fighting themselves to death after they find out they are all in love with the same woman.

Along the Banks

Synopsis: A retelling of an ancient story involving a priest and a river spirit. Noted for the fact that it makes the priest more vulnerable than in other tellings of the story.

A Truthful Account in the City of Lies

Synopsis: Koyuki once had a rival who dared her to publish an honest story instead of make believe fiction. This is the book Koyuki wrote that detailed the secrets of several noble women, including her rival. After the resulting duels and retirements to convents, it was decided that Koyuki should perhaps find a new life far, far away from Ryoko Owari.

Betrayal's Curse

Synopsis: This is a story of a love triangle involving a young shugenja, her childhood friend, and the shugenja's Turtle betrothed. The speed with which Koyuki wrote the book after her marriage is astounding. Koyuki chalks it up to the inspiration of Benten.

The Tales from the Village of Gentle Rest
Synopsis: A collection of vignettes involving travellers passing through a small village that is located along the roads leading into and out of Scorpion lands.

DESCRIPTION
A man who stands, if caught standing, at 5ft10" he is very pale for he spends most of his time inside in his workshop.


BACKGROUND
Kagae was born into the Kaiu family of the Crab clan where he as all Kaiu's do attended the Kaiu engineering school for his childhood. Here he learnt the crafts of armour and weapon smithing. The grandeur of engineering and history then the revered tactics of battle and Kenjutsu. Then the whispered secrets of the shadowlands and traps.
He passed his Gempukku quite easily in which he designed and built an improved ballista but forgot to hand over the plans for it afterwards and it now sits in a Kaiu workshop being studied to reveal its secrets.
After he passed his Gempukku Kaiu Kagae retreated to his workshop for several years becoming known in his family as a hermit who barely ate or left his workshop. He became quite anti-social during this period due to his lack of interaction with other humans bar any servants that delivered food to make sure he did not starve himself by accident.
All attempts to marry him off failed also due to how distant he seemed always wanting to be back in the warmth of his forge. One day his father came in with great news that Kagae things were packed and he'd go to the Jade tournament to win himself a great status. His knew he'd agree also that it was a great idea no need to say his goodbyes and remember to send letters.

Slam!

Kagae now found himself with a bit of a dilemma as he couldn't return home until he had attended this Jade Tournament. 'Oh well' he thought to himself as he grabbed his belongings and begun his travels to the Jade Tournament.

Blessing of the Elements (Earth) - Blessed by the Kami of Earth, she receives discounts on xp used to raise Earth Ring and Traits, and may spend a void point as a simple action once per day to gain an additional +0 wound level for 3 hours.

Hands of Stone - Her hand-to-hand techniques are particularly devastating. She keeps an additional damage die in unarmed combat.

Higher Purpose (Healing) - She cannot abide by the suffering of others and will go out of her way to assist those in mortal danger, even if it means putting herself at risk. She may gain 1 xp per session if she works towards this goal.

Magic Resistance (4pts) - The kami are extremely reluctant to answer prayers invoked against her. Shugenja add +10 TN to spells targeting her, and she receives +10 TNtbH against AOE spells (but not any natural effects caused by those spells).

DESCRIPTION
‘Mysterious’ is a word used to describe pretty much any Dragon, but on first, second, and maybe even third impressions that is exactly how Masuyo appears: just like any other Dragon. Her quiet, unassuming features make her difficult to pick out or remember. She isn’t too tall or too short, her hair is as black as the next Rokugani, and her eyes as almond brown (though they still shimmered with the telltale Kitsuki ‘pierce’ that always looked as if they were boring into the very soul of those that looked at them). Indeed it could be said that she was really quite bland... among other Dragons. To the rest of the Empire, however, Dragons tended to stand out regardless.

Her lean, muscle-toned body and dark, weather-worn skin told the tale of a hard life in the northern mountains. Though her robes are always simple, she frequently (and proudly) displays two intricately etched tattoos; one of a white/gold/emerald dragon “crawling” down the entire length of her back, it’s head and talons curling back upward at the very base of her spine; and the second a series of firmamently connected runic curves and symbols spaced with cherry blossoms, starting at her shoulder/breast and running down her right arm until it ended with an infinity knot on her wrist (looking as if the kami themselves had artfully practiced calligraphy upon her in each of their colors and then watermarked it at the tip).

DESCRIPTION

Her mothers delicate features are shown in Nahomi's long ebony hair and high cheek bones, but most of a resemblance ends there. Her father has lent her serious eyes and a sometimes expressionless face. And often she cannot help but look serious even during light jokes, even if she is enjoying them. Alabaster skin often gives her the appearance of being cold, however, having grown up in the mountains, she has a natural immunity towards common cold nights and even some nippy winters. Her eyes are a dark greenish grey, almost cloudy, and perhaps this is why people see her as different. Or it could be a small birthmark on her left temple. Standing just shy of 5'4", and of lightly built athletic body, many wonder how she can hold a sword at all, but most wouldn't doubt she could hold one well.

To help hide her unsettling appearance, she often wears a mask that covers her eyes and the top half of her face. It appears to be of the same green colour as her armor, and has several black lines around the eyes which disappear underneath her hair at her temples. This also helps hide her birthmark.


BACKGROUND
Mirumoto Nahomi was born the only child of Mirumoto Utaemon, a Jade Legionarre stationed in the north of Dragon lands near one of the Towers of Flame. Her mother, Mirumoto Fei was a beautiful courtier, more interested in diplomacy than fighting. Shortly after Nahomi's birth, Fei tragically died, and the village was left to help raise the child when her father was away.

From a very young age Nahomi could tell that people treated her differently. Although too young to understand, her appearance caused unsettled nerves for those around her. Something just didn't feel right.

Many of the women within the village said it was because her father treated her like a boy, and that he had meddled with her fragile mind at such a young age. Worried that she found no interest in learning the delicate feminine activities or those that would make her an ideal wife, yet flourished in those that involved getting dirty and spending too long away from home among groups of men, studying Niten.

Many of the men said that it was because some part of her had been lost, or captured, during the death of her mother, and that she was harboring some sort of curse. And that her mother had not died purely because of childbirth. Speculation of course.

But in Nahomi's eyes, it was as though they just couldn't stand to look at her. Examining herself in puddles of water, she wasn't ugly, nor did she show arrogance or hurt towards others. She was a kind person. But over time she accepted that she would always be an outsider, and as such spoke little although always listened.

Her mother had collected scrolls, parchments and books from across the lands. It seemed, after looking through old boxes, that her mother had been keenly interested in the spirit realms and the threat of attack from the north.

It wasn't paranoid interest though, often bushi from the village would spend time on call to reinforce the northern wall, or to run messages, or guard the supply caravans that headed up the difficult paths that led up the mountain.

Receiving word that her father had passed away in the north during a small skirmish with the yobanjin, after having missed out on seeing Nahomi pass her gempukku (at the age of thirteen), it seemed as though she had no place within the small village anymore. It was with prodding by her aunt that she finally set off to study the world.

Although her skill with a sword were impressive, and the coolness with which she studied her opponents unnerving, she was a learned girl. With long days spent studying Niten, or the various lore that interested her, she soon outlearned children of similiar age perhaps passing up on childish activities to spend time alone by a stream.

A close friend of her father, having promised to look after Nahomi if anything had happened to him, helped her continue her studies. After a few years of watching the girl improve, he explained how her natural curiosity and skill with a sword could make her a Jade Magistrate one day.

He is perhaps the only person who see's beyond her outwardly unsettling aura. Having suffered a similar childhood.

Having turned eighteen, and with no prospects of her extended family marrying her off, she has grown attached to her lonely lifestyle.

Perhaps she searches for why people treat her so differently, or to find out if her mother had been taken by some evil, that held a small part of her soul hostage.

DESCRIPTION
Yukimitsu is usually an easy-going and fun-loving guy, enjoying a good joke and seeing humor in every situation. He likes to socialize, whether his chosen audience wants his attention or not. Because of his need to entertain and to be entertained, he's drawn towards geisha houses. The music, the laughter, the stories. He only has good memories of staying there.
The dark side of his personality comes from anything revolving around his grandmother. It's a complete taboo, along with talk of his parents. In fact, his family tree is something better left out of any conversation. Yukimitsu also has no intention of talking about what happened to his left eye. If he can, he'll change the subject. If not, he just won't speak.
His travels had been pretty stress-free, making his fear of a seizure all but disappear. He had not had to talk about it to anyone before, so the first seizure with any new companion is usually an interesting one.

BACKGROUND
Yukimitsu's childhood was pretty laid-back. He grew up fishing along the coast as the ships surfed across the ocean in the distance. He was always helping out around the entire village, without a thought to his own health or safety. He was loved by everyone in his village. The key word there is "was".
No one had known what became of Yuki's (as he had been adoringly nicknamed) grandmother. She had disappeared on a trip to the Crab Clan's lands. When Yuki was 14 and a full-fledged bushi, his grandmother returned home. Yuki had thought it was a sign of fortune. He had thought that the gods were congratulating him on a job well done. It was not so.
As he embraced his long lost grandmother, he had felt cold metal pierce his left eye and blind it. He remembered holding his eye, blood running down his hand, while his grandmother laughed as if possessed. Congratulations, my darling grandson. She had said between her cackles. I hope you like my gift. Courtesy of the Shadowlands. With that, she disappeared again. Not without leaving some of her evil behind, though.
Yukimitsu was now looked down upon, not only for his now useless eye but for the Taint that was sure to call him in as well. He lost all of his friends and his fellow bushi felt sorry for him. The only refuge he had was in the form of his parents, who were also looked at with suspicion.
It went on for a few months before Yuki decided that he had had enough. The looks and whispers were driving him insane. Not to mention that he was having seizures from the high amounts of stress it caused. He left by the light of the moon, leaving a note for his parents to find when the sun rose. He wasn't about to completely dishonor them by becoming a masterless wanderer, however. He found a lord to serve and traveled the land and seas for him.
It was completely possible that he would meet his grandmother again. Next time we meet, he vowed, I will take more from you than just an eye.
