D&D is just Nanobots; you can heal, do magicsz, and all kinds of things. I shall go into depth basing stuff off of D&D 4E!

Healing surges

Healing surges is magic. You can heal a stab wound, burn wound, magic or otherwise with just some down time or encouraging words. This is becuase you have nano-bots coursing through your veins; they can preform micro repairs and accelerate healing and the mitosis of cells, but they preform an even more important role, which is chromosome shape repair. You get cut right; you might form a scar, or scar tissue. Humans aren't homogenous blobs made up of one grey material; we are made up of individual pieces. Even if you did heal the likelihood of scarring is rather high, meaning that while it heals it heals into a useless, sometimes annoying blob of scar tissue, and you never get full recovery.

Even worse, things like mutations and cancers can develop as a result of scarred tissue, as the chromosome expression is messed up and while the genes themselves don't change the cell memory does, causing different shapes and sometimes disastrous effects.

Luckily, nano-bots help prevent this; it causes apoptosis in cancerous cells as the body can recognize impaired cell function (this merely expands on it, as it can have a tough time distinguishing cancer cells from regular cells, but more importantly doesn't know how to kill them specifically) and with nano-bots rather than relying on a one size fits all method (like radiation which effects the whole body, or pills, or something like gets absorbed through the skin and into the blood stream) these can micro target.

More importantly, it can heal wounds; rather than relying on the present, possibly damaged and scarred cells for mitosis, the nano-bots essentially store a blue print of your body on a regular basis and repair from that. So for instance, if you did have a scar and it got removed, your body would repair that back to the way it was, going off of whatever was present and then replacing this.

While one COULD control their innate physiological controls with this and turn into a dragon (which they eventually do) then you could do anything you want, but again, it's a FEELING; you feel a certain way and do things, it's an art and not a science and you don't recognize your potential.

This is also why it only responds to massive trauma; you can grow stronger, get older, age, but only when massive cell tissue disruption occurs do you heal. You could theoretically make yourself live forever in peak physical condition (some races do, or for hundreds of years) but again, it's a feeling, not a science or innate understanding of how it works despite possessing some neural control over the basic actions of the nano-bots. If you knew it wasn't just a "feeling" then your power coming from "divine zealotry" or "primal instinct" would mostly be absent, as you would know that it was all science and just advanced technology, not witchcraft as it appears to be.

What is required however, is food; you need sufficient energy and biomass to replace damaged cells AND to power the nano-bots (they are carbon based and absorb a little bit of carbon from your bloodstream as a result of food, among other proteins as they use highly complex DNA computers) although your metabolisms are REALLY low and you don't need to sleep or eat as often.

The nano-bots gain power from your body and from your food, transforming it into energy and existing roughly 50 per cell and all through your bloodstream and other fluids, but there is also usually a hive brain, in the center of your chest.

This is grow into an individual sense an embryo and given it's propensity to map out an entire body it knows roughly where a chest is and a sand grain sized little super nano DNA computer (trillions of terabytes, potentially) that is powered by your own body and constantly "living" off your body, like a small parasite, serves as a central brain for the rest of your other bots.

These transmit messages wireless, and while this allows nanotechnology and psychic powers to a degree as you could effect someone wirelessly, this is mostly attributed to voodoo and not the wireless behavior and communication of your nano-bots.

Just as your body has information of your DNA and all the animals that came before you, your nano-bots have this and so, so much more, being able to remember your bodies changes on a regular basis and activate a healing ability to repair them just as they were 24 hours ago (this is why raw sleep and resting can heal wounds).

While you could always be repairing yourself and never age, this simply does not happen with every race; very few believe themselves to be immortal or capable of it without having to first achieve some arbitrary sense of "glory", and therefore do not feel they can gain this magic lest they go out and adventure and earn it somehow.

It's more or less an advanced form of OCD; everyone thinks they need to worship and pay sacrament to their gods, but they do not; magic swords do not give magic power, you merely feel this way.

Magic

Yes, you got magic. But this is again just innate physiological control; anyone could have these powers, and your "power source" is just your "feeling". Mages feel it necessary to say words to cast spells, scorers need crazy dances and sheer awesomeness (high Charisma) and pallies and clerics feel the divine inspiration around them. Barbarians and other primal characters feel their "primal instinct", and controlling nano-bots is much like a primal instinct, or moving your pectoral muscle or pinkie toe.

Often you find links among these feelings; mages can do much more, relying on analytical approach and written down phrases, the word themselves not possessing magic but you, where as divine individuals tend to be able to heal more often or incite physical vigor in the form of strength (avengers, clerics, pallies, battleminds etc.)

Primal individuals tend to spout out electricity, which is fitting given it's "instinctual nature"; the nano-bots give off an electrical discharge and raw "feeling" tends to present this. As well as improved strength and healing and whatnot.

Shapeshifting is a little more tricky, but given that all races simply have transformed and stayed that way due to ignorance of how they could be any race theoretically, as long as said creature does not change mass it's entirely plausible to do. As well, illusion projections are not impossible and imagining something someway is easy enough to project, as light photons are rather easy to produce.

Fire and Cold

Fire and cold are hard to produce, specifically, becuase of their abilities and strength. However, you need not only heat something up or cool it down, and given the large energy you have from the nano-technology, it's entirely possible (encounters and dailies wear you out, for instance, and takes more "energy" or zeal to do).

Thus while you cannot make nothing from something you can create fire or ice from given objects and draw from the air to make things or create fire.

Races

Races are rather simple. After the post apocalyptic event took place humans went on and mutated, but not normally; they got to choose, and their nano-bots made them able to change shape. It happened over a long period of time and these people could be anything they want, but becuase they believe they are dragons or humans or elves so much, they are.

They could all live forever, grow rock arms or become 10 foot giants, but they don't feel that they are this; you are limited by their feelings. A true hero might find new powers as he goes on, or grow wings; but they were capable of this the whole time, as are all others, and they feel they could grow wings as anyone can.

Humans now might feel that they are innately born to be kings, or rulers, or to be able to fly; with nano-bots, your inherent wants would naturally push you in that direction, although you wouldn't understand how it was controlled.

With full mastery and realization you could do whatever you want, including mastering every discipline, including magic and all, except you would need sufficient bio mass for the energy.

Due to your magic, your groups of people don't try to invent new technology; you don't need a gun, as you've got magic, and hey, magic would be better anyways. You lack understand but possess meager control over base physiological reactions, and thus shooting out fire does not require a blowtorch or flying doesn't require machines.

While many inventors come up with things on their own, they need other information; technology builds on itself, and computers allow newer technology to advance for instance, and without a billion people working on new tech all the time technology advances very slowly.

You have weapons and gear perhaps, but you could do so much more, but instead rely on base nano-technology given to you rather than developed and only realize how to control some of it.

And not all die; minions die rather quickly and others are weaker.

It's not that they lack the ability, so much as they do not realize it; just as you do not realize your full potential and are but scratching your full potential.

Zombies

Zombies are creatures who have the nano-bots in them, but obviously didn't heal correctly. They reawakened as zombies due to slow roasting or nano-bots malfunction and now roam around as nearly empty shells, controlled by nano-bots; while said zombies COULD heal all the way back, the point is that everyone thinks they are limited. You need an awesome sword of wand to preform magic, or magical energies; yet encouraging words from a warlord will heal a broken leg good as new!

In the end, you have complete control of all, but due to your own idiosyncrasies, thoughts of being a specific thing and type classing yourself and not understanding the true power you limit yourself.

Yesh you do.

But you as a character feel that it must be gotten or derived in a certain way, such as from a spellbook, and don't realize just how powerful the nano-bots actually are.

It's like only making fireballs when you could fly and shoot out laser beams.

To each their own. xp

Except these peeps are just stupidsz. xd

Seriously, magic has been around for a while and NO guns; you can bring the dead back to life and grow back arms but man, guns are just a little too complex for potions and stuff.
