lol, I wouldn't think it is unusual at all. Its the same wealth and family hand in hand driven idea that can be thanked for much of what we know in todays society.
For example, guilds had a large hand in the creation of what we know as cities today. And elitism exist in a wide range of forms from the "in" crowd at schools to another family first business, the Mafia.
