http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/26/update-on-playstation-network-and-qriocity/
It has been confirmed that PSN was hacked into sometime last week. It has also been confirmed that there was also theft of data. AS OF NOW they do not believe that credit card information was stolen but they are NOT ruling it out.
Other items that may have been compromised are:
Name Address (city, state, zip) Country Email address Birthdate PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login and handle/PSN online ID.
It is strongly advised that when the network comes back up that you change your password ASAP. In addition if you shared that password with any other important account that you change that password.
Till more information comes out it is recommended that you keep an eye on your credit/debit card transaction to make sure there is no fraud going on.

I saw this on anandtech, some of the user comments were amuzing. The calls for companies like Sony to take full blame amuzed me, also calls for Sony to do more then "wait and finally tell" people whats up. Dunno about you but I would like to investigate something BEFORE I start posting all sorts of warnings.
I know some complain that Sony is responsible for the credit card numbers but in the end, all they really have to do is warn you, inform the banks and they are done. I don't feel sorry for people that don't pay attention to their CC bills, if you do, then you notice little things like someone using it.
Still, its good that Sony put out the warning, I suspected something along the lines of a hack were the reason. Why else pull the system down.

Yeah, those comments are pretty funny. I haven't commented on the posts and what not but they are crazy.
We don't know what Sony had prior to the breakin but the fact that they are rebuilding the security is good. Sony could have just done a patch job.
People need to figure out that security is not full proof and the right people can crack it if they want to.
People should put their anger towands the hackers who did it over Sony.

An update (Courtesy of Magic Box)!
Sony announced that online gameplay, PlayStation Home, friends list and chat functionality will be restored later this week for both PS3 and PSP. All PS3 will have a mandatory system update which requires user to change their PSN passwords online or via validated email confirmation.
Sony announced a Welcome Back program as a token of appreciation, all PSN user will receive a free month of PlayStation Plus, each territory will also get free entertainment content downloads, details will follow soon.
The updated PlayStation Network will have additional firewalls, enhanced levels of data protection and encryption, and extra measures to detect software attacks on the network. Sony also created new chief information security officer who reports directly to Sony Corporation chief information officer Shinji Hasejima.
The US Department of Homeland Security is helping Sony in the investigation of security breach on the PSN, Homeland Security was created in 2002, to protect American from terrorist and other threats. Department of Homeland Security spokesman Chris Ortman said the Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) is working with law enforcement, international partners and Sony to assess the situation.

This is good news.
One of the worst things about the whole hacking is that people, in a panic are simply cancelling cards and what not. They could simply watch their cards (yes it would take some effort and take paying attention to your bills for once) and simply act IF you see something wrong.
On the note of the investigation, is it wrong that I kinda hope it was someone claiming to be part of Anon. that did it and that they catch him/her? I want to see some hackers brought down a peg or two, a bit of a reminder they are not hidden and are not above the law.

Some more good news:
Sony has contracted with Debix Inc to provide US PSN and Qriocity account holders with 12 months of free identity theft protection program AllClearID Plus, users can register with the program before June 18 to receive the 12 months free subscription. The AllClearID Plus service includes an insurance policy which provide up to $1 million to cover impact of ID theft such as legal defense fees and lost pay within 1 year of PSN security breach.
We should be seeing PSN back up soon! Final Security testing has already begun!

Rumors of a 3rd hack attempt float about on some news stations but it is largely believed to be a bluff by those not even connected to the original hack.
I do hope they catch atleast some people responsible for this, simply to remind hackers that they are not above the law and are not nearly as hidden as they seem to think they are.

It started on cnet. They got a tip from someone who was supposedly was on a IRC with people planning this attack. So you can take it for what it's worth. Supposedly since this is a worldwide event a lot of governments are involed. Rumor has it that over in Europe they have a good idea on who it is.

I could believe it, I know in the US they got the FBI and some agency that was created for cyber terrorisim involved, I would not be surprised if in Europe that they have all sorts of agencies involved in it. I suspect the attack talk was just a bluff, the sad part is I am seeing X-box fans saying this could never happen to them... I almost wish it would just to shut them up. People seem to forget that no matter HOW hard you try, you can't be 100% secure in a cyber world.

There was a huge breach like this that happened to a company called Epsilon. Pretty much to the same level that happened with Sony. They had information from a lot of companies. That happened like in Feb or something. Government hasn't done much about it. Europe on the other hand has been on top of their cyber attacks. I kind of have more faith in them then our guys. There are a lot of misinformation going on about what actually happened. Like people thinking the hackers took down the network. Which isn't right. Sony shut down the server when they suspected something. If memory serves XBL was down that one time for around a month for whatever reason. Which was during the Christmas season.

I think there is a lack of action in pretty much all North American countries when it comes to cyber crime. Canada is bad as well, lagging behind in cyber defences. The worst part about the hack, aside from the misinformation is the people running around screaming about how their identities will be stolen, etc. They fail to realize that, in all likely hood, their information has been stolen several times already. That and the really bad jokes about it.

What surprises me is all the people telling others to change their cards. How it only takes 5 mins to do it. It's like it should only take you a 1 min to CHECK it. But I guess it's whatever makes you sleep at night. Yup, like I said Epsilon was hacked a few months ago, and that held info from a lot of companies. http://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/list-companies-hit-epsilon-breach-040511 I'm not sure if that's the full list.

People are just silly and over react, you know that a Toronto woman (yes Canadian did this), filed a suit against Sony US, Japan and Euro for damages to everyone whom was effected by this? I know it will fail, Canadian courts don't tend to be overly lawsuit friendly and frankly she doesnt really have a case.
Added in that the Conservatives won a majority Gov't that will influence it as well. This will take years to deal with, likely reach the Supreme Court of Canada AND then poof... it will fall apart.
I have no doubt in my mind Sony did its best to protect the data, and unfortunatly for those that were hoping Sony might open up the system again, I think this hack has really hurt that. There is no way Sony will open it up again now, all thanks to hackers.
