Lately,
all the critiques I get have been harsher and harsher.
If not that, I am ignored.
This is on another website, mind you, but it hurts all the same.

Especially when I see someone of lower skill level being dished with compliments and the like.

Am I just really that bad?
Gone so downhill that a stick figure is better then my art?

I know I am just being whiny but it does hurt.

Keep in mind that usually people aren't very harsh with artists with lower skills than a very talented artist. People that just started drawing (or whatever) need to hear good things about his/her art in order to keep wanting to do art.
Talented artists usually get critique, because people feel that they want to know what they could've done better. I'm pretty bad at explaining this in English, but I hope you get what I mean :]

I understand but can't they at least give something that doesn't make me feel like I flat out suck and can't get better?

If the site isn't full of other anime styled artists most people will usually come down hard on anyone who has any semblance of the style in their artwork. The only reason I avoided a lot of this was because I started out by showing life drawing and oil painting so people were aware that I had working knowledge of realism and wouldn't get into the standard "why don't you draw some other style" kind of argument.

I'm sorry you feel down though, art's kinda funny like that. You'll go through periods where your work seems to hit and others where no one will give you the time of day. Just have to tough it out and keep working.

Well I personally dont' see how your "sucks" in any way, i'm quite jealous smile
But is this DeviantArt? Because people can get pretty mean on there.
I know how you feel when someone who doesn't have nearly as much artist skill as you is getting a BUNCH of views and favorites on their art when you might only have like….30 views cuz that's how I am gonk But i've learned if you submit your art to a bunch of groups alot of people view it and that equals awesomeness twisted

But if people are getting harsh about critiques then just simply ignore them, disable critiques on your work and just know that those people are acting harsh because they are jealous and they feel frustrated with themselves.
Just keep on drawing, and never give up on your incredible art skills heart no matter what others say about it.

I think the issue is that people don't know how to give constructive criticism. They merely dish out harsh criticism, thinking that they are being truthful and helpful when they are not. Do they tell you how they think you could improve? Or do they just tell what they think is "wrong"? Do they highlight the parts that they like about the piece? Or not at all?

Don't let them get you down, you are a good artist. Granted, everyone (and I really mean this) has room to grow, so you shouldn't let the harsh comments get you down.

Oh god Lune, your a wounderful artist, and you do such lovely water colour. Let me confirm for you, your an Amazing artist!!! with so much talent! Your colour choices are beautiful and your sketchs have such lovely movement in them.

Let me point out how being an artist is hard! Despite what some people may think. Were constantly subject to creticism and are rarely appreciated when we do something good. As artist people like to look at our art work, and try and point out anything and everything that can be wrong with it. With out, so much as, taking the time to point out all the good things in it neither... which for me is very important because I find many artist have low self estimes in there art work, because of stuff like this. This is why I find it important to point out good aspects in a drawing even when theres things to correct. Constructive criticism is good, but some people take this to a hole new level and try to be mean just for the sake of bringing you down. This may be trigered by jelousy, or maybe even the fact they don't like you being happy with what you did (*shrugs* I don't understand myself, but theres are people out there like that) But these people are SOOOOOOOO not worth your or anyones time.... I can assure you all the artist we've invited or allowed in this guild is because they had talent. Peoples level of talent is naturally mesured in different ways... no ones level is the same... but every artist here has something that strikes us as impressive, refressing, beautiful, funk or intriguing in there art work. No one here is worth bashing I think. And personaly, I think if the only feed back your getting is negative or people bashing your art work, that these are the types of people you should be accepting cretizism from... Because they may just be putting you down for no reason, and in the long run, thats not good for any artist moral.

Maybe don't post there anymore lune : 3 Your a great artist, and I don't think your moral should be brought down by people like that, specially cause the artwork you do is amazing... I fail to see how people can really bash you so much... don't listne to them.

I also think it's because criticism is so easy. Not everyone means to say harsh things or sound mean, but I think it's often just that when you get to a higher level of art, the problems become more obvious.

The way I see it there are kind of three levels of art. Beginners, advanced, and pro. most people in here I would say are at the advanced level and that is the hardest to be at.

If you're a beginner, everything looks so wrong that people just accept it because there isn't a whole lot you can say is wrong without saying that nearly everything is wrong and I like to think that most people who give critiques are trying to be helpful so they won't point all that out to a beginner.

If you're on the pro level, there may be things wrong with your art, but they are so tiny that only the artist can see them. In which case they will usually fix them so their art is near perfect.

The advanced stage is the toughest to be in because your art is starting to take on pro level qualities and so now, people will naturally start to compare it with the perfect pro work that they have seen before, weather they mean to or not.

It's rough to always be getting harsh criticism, and it's a shame that sometime there are just jerks out there who want to bring you down. But if you think of it, realizing that they can only point out so many problems because they are comparing it to pro stuff, then it's kind of a compliment. It means that you're getting closer and if you can take their critiques with a positive attitude and perhaps a grin of salt, to weigh out the jerks, then you could really learn a thing or two. Probably not from them or anything they say, but just from thinking about what they say and trying to apply something new to your art. When you take criticism well, you kind of teach yourself what you need to know, and before you know it, you're pro. biggrin

The most successful people compare only with themselves. It's hard as an artist, because you always have to look around to see what everyone else is up to. An artist's job is done when he cannot improve anymore, which can happen at a high or a low level.

I never kept many "close" friends on internet but some people have more support for their art simply because they've got more people around them or their style is more favourable. The main purpose of art for most people is simply to have something pretty to look at...stick them in a gallery of modern art and they probably want out. rofl

I find personally that I feel like I'm not improving, a lot. But all it takes is a look at something else I've done recently to prove that I have been. I also find myself having to push myself harder to actually improve, and not slip in to doing the same old thing all the time. If you feel like your stuck in one area, try something new, that you don't devote a lot of time to. You'll find yourself improving fast in that area, and it'll be easier to feel like your getting somewhere again.

One thing I notice from lurking is that better art tends to get more subjective criticism than poorer art, which leads to it looking like more criticism overall, because every new person will have different ideas about what they like and don't in your picture.

Like, if someone draws a girl with one leg shorter than the other and an inconsistent light source, then everyone asked to critique will say that there is one leg shorter than the other and an inconsistent light source. But when there aren't such blatant errors, people will start to pick out little things that they, personally, find to be weak points in your art - one person might want more detail, another think that the face looks a little off, another might take issues with your choice of colour, and so on. You read that and come away feeling like you've done everything all wrong, but it tends to be the case that there are far fewer actual errors, and it's more a matter of nuances than right and wrong.

That in mind, I think broader critiques are generally a sign that you're improving. When you post amateurish art, people won't critique too deeply because that's not what's beneficial at this stage. You point out the biggest, most fundamental problems, give basic advice and encouragement to keep people going. There's no point in highlighting every single mistake, because it would be far too much information to work with, and also probably just make the artist pack away their paints and give up. Once you get to a higher level, more detailed, pernickety crits are given, because that's where the focus on improvement lies.

I also think that if you're posting better art for crit, people assume you really do want thorough critique, rather than a couple of compliments paired with "you should make your shadows stronger". People expect that you have enough confidence in your art not to need the compliments so much once you've got to a certain level of skill, and therefore if you're asking for criticism, you really want criticism. I think I just said the same thing twice in two different sentences. Never mind.

And, of course, you do get people who don't much know what they're talking out being blunt and nasty through resentment. This definitely happens more the better art is - I think people want to reassure themselves that they're valid as artists too, despite you blowing them out of the water, and I guess really bluntly pointing out everything that's wrong with a picture is a way to reassure yourself that they're not so awesome and you can get there too.

Hope that makes you feel better. (:

I do agree with what hellosara said.
And in my opinion, when your an intermediate or professional artist, some people would give you harsher critics. Probably some of them are their opinions on what their ideal kind of anime is.
I had posted many pictures on the forum, picture post. And considering I'm not a beginner, people would point out critics that are to their likings.
They give out harsh critics that would struck me, and sometimes ignore me at all. And in my most recent post, they never EVER told me, "Good job." or "Keep it up," or a simple word, "nice."
Sometimes, I also feel like as if they tend to really look and find out errors in my picture that they will critic. It's harsh.

As an artist like you, I guess being ignored isn't that bad when you post pictures.
It just means that people cant find anything bad about your picture and tend to just leave it like that. ^^
Don't worry, the only thing artists do is improve.
