So I decided to draw a self portrait. I'd already drawn a character based on myself, so I just drew it in a similar way. I want to keep it relatively simple looking, so I don't want to use too much shading on it. I think heavy shading makes things look too dark and gritty, and that isn't the mood I want to convey. Here it is:

How does it look? What's good, what's bad, and should I change anything?

no I think it looks great : 3 You did a really good job with the proportions, I only have 2 segestions to make it even better. The first of wich, is I think you should take out the top line that marks the top of the shoulder... only because by doing this, it makes the shoulders really look like its a separate piece from the body(isolated from the body), when really its only the arms that apart from the body not the shoulders, so yea I think if you take that out it could really help your image look better. : )

Also I know you don't want to add shading but I think that the image could really give us more that "wow" factor if you lightly shaded a bit, just to give your forms more volumes. Cause right now your image looks kinda flat but thats only because you didn't put any shading. I think if you put a little shading, just in the shadows to help creat some volumes in your image you can really make it stand out more 3nodding

Now I understand what you mean about to much shading on it makes it look gritty and stuff, so I just found you a couple examples of how you can do it lightly just to show off some volumes and forms with out it getting

notice how the shading is very light and not dominant at all, we don't get the gritty feeling as much but it still helps define more the forms and volumes of the muscles under neath : 3 I definitly think your drawing would look amazing with a modification of that sort on it!

You did a really great job on your drawing and I can't wait to see some more of your work : 3

its getting better now cause your emphasising some parts, by adding shading your showing some forms are further out then other parts. Example, by adding a shadow under the head your showing that the head is further out then the neck... but it still seems a little to suttle... like your holding back from going to far out... possibly because your scared of ruining your image? is that it? If it is, maybe photocopy it and try adding shading to the copy version... but I think you still need to make your shadows bigger... not necessarily darker but just more large so we really get more of a sense of forms from your shapes... I did a quick example to show you what I mean, your lighting probably won't give anything like this, but its just an idea of how you can make the shadows larger to show off more of the volumes of your forms

BTW: The arm looks great now that you took out that line : D !!!! It really looks much better!!!! heart

And the good suggestions keep coming smile Thank you. But I'm not sure if I want to shade it quite as much as you did because it shows off my pudge a little too much sad

Thanks! It's still getting better, though, I think. Here's the latest stage:

Huh. My neck is kinda shorter than normal I think, and it might be exagerated by the position of my head in this. I might also have made the top of my back a smidge too high, though. At this point, I don't think it's worth changing.

I know my body is amazing, so of course I'm honest about it biggrin But honestly, thank you. It's always good to be supported regardless of my love handles.
I had no chest when my middle was thinner, anyway. So everybody should just like it. razz
