International Confederation of Wizards British Seats
Department of International Magical Cooperation

The International Confederation of Wizards is the wizarding version of the United Nations. British seats on the International Confederation of Wizards are probably selected by the Minister for Magic, possibly subject to the approval of the Wizengamot.

The International Confederation of Wizards is headed by a person who holds the title "Supreme Mugwump". The first appointed Supreme Mugwump was Pierre Bonaccord. However his appointment was contested by Warlocks in Liechtenstein, due to his opinions on stopping Troll-hunting and rights for Trolls. Liechtenstein, who had been dealing with several nasty Troll communities at the time refused to attend the first conference, causing trouble for the new institution.

In 1692, the Confederation instituted the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy to hide the wizarding world from the Muggle world. After weeks of discussion, they decided on how the wizarding world would retreat into hiding, including the covering up of various magical beasts and eliminating them from the Muggle consciousness.

AUGUST TANZIL MEYLIAN LI
24 years || Slytherin alum || muggleborn
Professor of Wizard Law
Staff Member in the International Confederation of Wizards

_______________

August took a deep breath and rubbed his temples before grabbing his wand and cleaning up around his desk. He sorted through the piles of memos on various trading agreements that were expiring and stacked the reference materials on the ground by his desk–he could take it back tonight before the archives closed. Over the last few months, the beverage of choice in the corner of his desk had turned from tea to coffee. The vials of empty girding and wide-eye potions in his wastebasket were piling up.

This was the third week in a row that August was at the Ministry every day. If he wasn’t in a meeting or teaching class at Hogwarts, he could usually be found at his desk, poring over texts and references for various educational documents and curriculums across the magical schools. After the giant staff turnover last year, Delegate Isay Archibald had fired one staff member and another two had quit. August had been reassigned to him at the beginning of the year. If August wasn’t training someone or interviewing someone for the position, he had plenty to do keeping up with interviewing another staff member.

Right. How much time do I have to eat? He was expecting the latest copy of the Exchange Program Proposal to come back from internal review this afternoon–Probably enough time to get a few papers done Besides his work for the Confederation, August was behind on grading. He had a stack of papers awaiting grading that he simply hadn’t been able to get to. (Not to mention August had the awkward position of informing Delegate Archibald that his sons had not turned in their Wizard Law homework whenever asked.)

August was trying, very hard, to not bring work home. Rhea was home recovering and taking care of Jun and newborn Maris. It meant when he was home, he was able to be emotionally and mentally there for his family. But it sometimes also meant he was at the office even after lessons. He had to go home and sleep at some point–his suit changed every day, and he was never caught sleeping at his desk. But the wear and tear was showing, despite his best attempts to suppress it.

He opened the pack lunch he’d brought, smiled at the cute note Rhea always included, and ate as he looked over papers and wrote feedback for his students.

Alarick no longer worked in an official capacity with the Ministry, but he did like to drop by every once and a while, see how things were going, say hello to a few friends. Which is when he was surprised to be walking by and seeing August working. Alarick stood outside August's door and looked at the kid working. He knew August had just done quite a bit of work with Hogwarts, and now was here working away. He had 2 kids, and a wife. Alarick sighed, he had seen this before, heck he was this before. Devoting your time to your work, so you could provide for your family, while also not being there with your family.

He walked in, took the stack of papers from in front of August (not wanting to take his lunch of course), and moved them to the floor, before sitting on the desk where he had just cleared a spot. "Hello there September! Another long day huh? You should really install like a hammock in here or something, take a nap every once and a while."

Amanda didn’t know how she had ended up being the one having to review several internal proposals, but there she was, red pen and highlighter in hand as she read through each one, marking up the pages with various underlines and circles, adding her own thoughts or questions into the margins. Perhaps this responsibility fell into her lap not only due to the fact that she had a knack for thinking things through and offering her opinion, but that she was also really good at it. Not quite the type of work the blonde had thought she would be given; however, she didn’t hate it. In fact, she had fun with it at times, seeing what type of proposals were being made within different departments of the Ministry and what projects or foundations were in the works.

Once Amanda finished up, she packed them all into her bag and delivered each proposal to their author one by one. From a distance, she could see that someone quite familiar sat on August’s desk. “Alarick,” she greeted with a head nod. “What brings you to the Ministry on this lovely Tuesday? Don’t have any students to teach?” she asked, half jokingly. The two had gotten to know each other about as well as Amanda would allow a colleague to know her, which after more than 20 years working in the same department, was actually pretty well. It sure didn’t help that she allowed her personal life to mix with certain other employees in the Ministry, such as her ex husband and her current husband in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

“Here, this is for you,” Amanda said, handing over the copy of the Exchange Program Proposal to August. Looking over the young man, the blonde frowned slightly. “Man, you look tired.” Tired was an understatement. August had looked like he hadn’t gotten a decent night’s rest in weeks. The bags under his eyes drooped and his skin looked paler than it used to.

_______________

August took a moment to recognize that he was being addressed and that he was "September". Another day August might have corrected him. "It's....August, sir." But of course Aldrick's father of all people would be a troll who couldn't remember his name. "Ah a...hammock." Sonora would love the idea, simply for the hammock. "I'll...take it into consideration."

And he did--For all of two seconds. If August had enough time to take a nap, he would go home to his wife and kids. Besides, even on days when he was alone and took a nap on the carriage to and from Hogwarts castle, August didn't feel so much like he was sleeping as resting his eyelids. If he had time to take a nap, he could go home and get some proper rest.

Thankfully, Amanda's arrival meant he didn't actually have time to ask if Alarick was just there to socialise or on serious business-- because one was a distraction he could ill afford even if necessary, and one was even more work and he was already going to get out late tonight.

"Thank you, Mrs. Drage--err, Amanda," August accepted the binder. His smile was polite and perfectly professional, but she must have seen past that. Well, Amanda had always let personal and professional blend a little. "It's just for a little," he said, as he had said two weeks ago. "I'll be fine. I'm still getting used to the different work styles."

It sounded perfectly reasonable. Two, not even three months was barely a long time to be in a position, and this was nowhere near the amount of work August had had to put on other projects he’d been on in the last seven years with the Confederation. Plus it wasn’t like this delegate was particularly difficult to work with–Isay Archibald, all flourishes of fashion, was charismatic and jolly on the floor of the International Confederation of Wizards or in meetings, was still uncompromisingly fair and remarkably thorough, and a stern taskmaster. He got things done, and August seemed to have an ability to predict where he was going with things and produce work that Archibald liked.

August snuck a peek at the first page of the returned proposal, skimming the memo on the first page and almost sighed audibly in relief at the positive note. Revisions would have to be made, of course, but they were on track. "One moment?"

August produced a thin folio that he had set aside earlier to hand to Amanda. "I just found out the Minister is meeting with the President of the American Magical Congress next week. If he would bring up the Exchange Program to the President, we can start building support for the program before the Confederation meets. I have a few documents with the basics, although they've yet to be copied with the official letterhead." He hoped that the notes were okay. He hadn't exactly had a chance to triple-check the copy and fix the prose, but hopefully it fulfilled the purpose.

While Amanda looked it over, August quickly finished off the comment he was writing for the student and set the grading aside. This particular paper was the start of a multi-part project he was starting with the 4th years: pairs of students would take on a case from Modern Magical Law: Concepts, Cases, and Controversies, and thoroughly explore the case, its context and history, the decision, the precedents it cited and created, the controversies. They'd be tasked with synthesising the legal concepts--including tying them into content covered over the course of the year--, reading original case documents, and creatively telling the story of the case. It was a big project, but it went a long way to bringing a lot of information together and creating a real experience. It was just poor luck that it meant he had to get all the proposed topics feedback before the end of the week. Just...more grading. Well, August had been a diligent student and expected the best of his students. He would put in as much work as they would have to.

Alarick shrugged when Amanda asked why he was there, "I came by to see my dearest friends here at the ministry. It's not like you all come visit me in my Hogwarts abode." Nor would he want them to, he figured if the ministry started showing up at Hogwarts it would cause much panic in the school, including his own...and he would probably know what was happening.

When Amanda also said August looked tired Alarick sighed, he had rather hoped he was just imaging the fatigue coming from the boy. He looked over Amanda's shoulder, ever curious what was happening with the Americans, and chuckled a bit, he didn't think the kids would enjoy this mix up, all the official documentation notes about the exchange program - well they might enjoy the idea but. Alarick shuffled all of August's papers in a stack, "September my boy, trust me when I say this: You need to go home and have some talks with that wife of yours. Women are very helpful to talk to in these stations. Very smart they are. Did I ever tell you about the woman I met with a taser? Man she was stunning." Alarick tried to break the unease of him having stacked away all of August's work, with his excellent taste of puns.

"Maybe you need to step back in life, and if I remember correctly that wife of yours is quite head strong, very passionate and lovable. I'm sure she has several opinions about your current work schedule. It's best not to anger the wives, September."

                                                  ╚═════════════════════════════════════╝

Amanda chuckled at Alarick’s response as to why he had visited the Ministry of Magic. “Somehow I don’t think you want us to visit you at Hogwarts,” she responded. Plus, it wasn’t like she would have been particularly thrilled with spending her free time going to see the professor while he busied himself with teaching or grading. Walking through Hogwarts for the first time since graduation, however, seemed a little more inviting. She wondered how the school must have changed over the past thirty years, or more likely stayed the same while most of the professors changed. She knew of some of the professors who were still there through her children, and there were some others with familiar faces as they were students with her. For the most part, though, she was sure the castle and its paintings and ghosts were all pretty much the same.

Amanda nodded at August when he thanked her for the binder. Although he smiled politely, as one did in an office, she noticed how dead he looked inside. The blonde had experienced her fair share of burnout throughout the years, but she never let hers build up quite as much as August let his. A frown formed on her lips when her colleague explained that he had still been getting used to the different work styles. Yet, she accepted the thin folio that he handed to her as he presented the opportunity they’d have for the Exchange Program. The woman opened up the document and scanned the writing on the pages. As she looked through them, she felt Alarick’s eyes gazing behind her. “Hey, this is classified. You’re no longer one of us, remember?” she hissed as she shifted away from him to block his view. If he didn’t know her as well as he did, Amanda may have come off as intimidating in that moment. However, they’ve worked together for so long, so she was sure he’d make a goofy remark.

Much to her relief, Alarick had shifted his attention back at August and lectured the young man about needing to talk to his wife about his schedule. “Did she tase you? I’d love to have one of those now,” she commented sarcastically. However, he did have a point. “He’s right, you know,” she agreed, turning to look back at August. “About how it’s best to not anger the wives, but also about your schedule. You really can’t do this to yourself much longer or your health, work and relationships will all deteriorate.” If Jacob had overworked himself this much, Amanda was sure to have given him an earful.

_______________

As Amanda looked over his memo and August finished grading that assignment, August looked up to find Alarick stacking--shuffling? Reorganizing his desk. Oh. Lovely. He'd have to check that...later. He did at least make up for it with one of his classic puns. Ah, Archibald just didn't tell jokes like Lorien. Amanda sniped in a punny follow up as well that had August smirking. He wished he had a retort as well, but his mind was cluttered with project proposals, Exchange Program details, Trading Standards specifics, and other work miscellany.

"Rhea and I are doing very well, thank you," he snapped, stifling back a more acerbic 'At least I'm not the one who missed my own daughter's birth.' Even so, August tried to stifle the worry bubbling up. He did not need Alarick Lorien-Knapp of all people lecturing on taking care of his family and wife!

That noted, Alarick Lorien-Knapp seemed to have entirely too much time on his hands now. August remembered just a few years ago when Mr. Lorien was never at home, when he was always in some foreign country, working to improve the life of wizards everywhere. He was still doing good work, teaching the next generation about ethical charmswork. But now he attended family picnics and what not. Plus he had entirely too much time to visit and taunt August with his free time.

Why is he bringing this up? Did Rhea bring up counselling? Or separation? No! She would talk to me before that! , he thought. August missed Rhea, which meant she probably missed him too. But work-wise, schedule-wise, they were managing. It wasn't like he had 14 kids at home whom he never saw, and he talked to his wife once a week–Oh moron dosha August did not want to even be on the same scale of parenting as Alarick was. There was no way he was doing what Alarick did to Mrs. Knapp. He refused to do that to his princess. He missed time alone with Rhea, just the two of them, no kids or other family after them. He missed time alone with his kids. Even if it was just reading a book as Jun slept... was it working two jobs? Or the addition of kids? Wren had 4 kids…well, siblings, but dependents nonetheless. No, Wren would just say his solution was to “don’t give a s**t” and that was strictly not helpful. Sona had two kids–well, Violet and another on the way– how did she manage? Sona would want to talk this out, figure out his feelings and take things slowly, build up good habits. August did not. He had work to do, and he had to get it done fast.

“It’s just for a little,” he assured Amanda. Well, that was a blatant lie. August knew by now that there were always more deadlines. If the Exchange program passed, he would have a lot more work helping to pin down the details of curriculums and logistics of student safety and all those details. Even if he didn’t, there were always programs that needed discussion and the attention of the delegates. The work of a staff member was never over, only more or less busy. “I do have to thank you for the project idea though. Group projects are a lot less grading.”

Besides, this was what he had signed up for. He couldn’t leave either of these careers behind–working with the International Confederation was good work and he enjoyed the intellectual challenge as much as he did working with people across the world. But teaching and mentoring students was such a staple in his life, he couldn’t imagine…not teaching. Even if he’d only been a professor for a year or so now, teaching just seemed like a calling.

When even Amanda pointed out that this schedule wasn't sustainable though, August felt he had to confess. He hadn't gotten sick yet, but he knew if he did, something would fall apart. He sighed and led the way towards the break room for a cuppa, dragging Alarick with him so the older man would stop fiddling with the stacks of work. There was hardly anyone in the office currently anyways, but it just didn’t feel professional to gripe about his work at his desk. Plus if they wanted to grill him about his work-life balance, then he may as well get some coffee. "Thank you both for your concern. If the proposals could just grade themselves, and someone could just stay for a few months--I need someone who can actually stay on. I get Archibald is demanding, but until we get a good team that can stay, I’m stuck balancing a whole team's worth of work.”
