For me, it's the first time I really really really really really really want an item worth millions of gold and I'm having trouble not buying other random stuff. >__<
So how do you stick to your goals without getting sidetracked?

Honestly, when I started questing, I refused to quest anything over 100ish K, because I knew I would get sidetracked. But when I finally got over that and started questing things 500+k (( a large amount, to me)) I would periodically send my money to a mule. Now I just don't bother with sending it away; If I want something bad enough, I don't get sidetracked. cx Or I just refuse to enter the MP. That works as well.

I think of just how badly I want that item. orz And the fact that I want to prove that I can see something to the end instead of slacking off until I just quit questing helps matters. o:

Well, the way I see it, if you're not saving all -- & I mean ALL -- of your gold to buy the item that you're questing for, then you can't want it that badly, can you?

I don't get side-tracked because i'm extremely cheap and refuse to buy anything that would break my even number, what ever it might be at that time.

I agree that if you want your quest item badly enough then you should be able to stop yourself from spending the gold on anything else. If it helps, put your gold on a separate account.
If you REALLY don't think you can live without spending some money on yourself, set milestones where you can buy stuff. If your quest item is 1mil, maybe buy yourself something worth 5k when you reach 100k. Then you can buy something worth 10-15k when you reach 250k. I set up a system like that to motivate myself through my minis quest and it's working so far :3

I might try that if I get too too under-motivated. O:
