I think just staying clear of them is definitely the best way to go. That's why I pretty much ONLY dwell in guilds.
Most of the forums on Gaia are more cliche-ish, elitist, & cruel than any middle school or high school social scene that I've ever seen or heard of. It's just not fun & not okay & not "cool" how people treat other people in most of those forums... The people there who don't accept you & treat you badly are complete scum, & you shouldn't try to please them & change yourself to make them like you, because that's letting them win; it's letting them defeat you by being completely childish, lame, assholes. If you change yourself & your behavior around to try & make people like
that think you're "cool", then what does that say about
you?
