Leon walked down the cobblestone street, his boots making a thump thump noise with every step. It was cold enough for him to see his breath, and he wished the army supplied him with some type of head protection. He would wear his own hat, but that would just interfere with the dress code and cause him another week of kitchen duty. Other than the punishment of having to scrub dishes, it seemed to him as though night watch was second on the list of worst army jobs. The Jews weren’t allowed out of their homes past ten at night, and someone had to keep watch that they didn’t break this rule. This was always assigned to the youngest of the soldiers, and he was out almost every week, walking through the dark streets and feeling his toes going numb from the cold. It was pointless, nobody in their right mind would break a rule set by the Nazis. The punishment for that would sometimes even result in death, if the soldier the poor person was unlucky enough to be caught by was in a bad mood. Therefore, it was a lonely and boring job.

Christine hurried down the road as the seconds ticked by. She knew the punishments for being out so late, but those weren't important at the time when she went out. Her parents had warned her about what could happen to a young Jewish girl out past curfew. She hadn't seen any of the soldiers out yet, but knew some were out there. They were always out there. She pulled the collar of her fur and leather jacket up and clasped her hands tight around her sides. It was another cold night, but the worst was yet to come. Christine quickened her steps and turned the corner. Only a few more blocks...only a few more... She thought in her head. She continued down the block and made another turn.

Leon was standing at the corner, lighting a ciggarete, when the girl walked straight into him. He stared at her for a second, suprised that someone actually tried to get away with breaking a rule so strictly guarded. He knew he should shoot her dead right there, like he was taught to do so. He grabbed her by the arm and cocked his gun. "What's your name?" He asked instead. She was a young thing, and he couldn't bring himself to kill her like a sick dog. "Where do you live?" He asked another question, tightening his grip so she wouldn't run off like they often tried.

By the time Christine had bumped into him, she knew it was too late. She knew better than to run off, so she stood as he grabbed her arm and yelled his commands. Stalling for a second, she thought if she should lie, then thought of the great punishment that would happen if she was caught. After hearing the sound of his gun, she started shaking and could feel her heartbeat quicken. "My name is Christine, I live about 4 blocks from here. I was on my way home." She said quietly, her eyes narrowed at the ground and their feet.

Leon stared at her for a moment. "Do you know what happens to silly girls like you that our caught outside after curfew? Or were you just too stupid to let it keep you from doing it anyways?" He said, a bit more hatefully than he meant to. "There are soilders on watch duty. One for every three blocks. I'm doing a mighty dumb thing, not shooting your head off right now and letting you go, so if you get caught by my bunk mate Joe, whose watching the place where your headed, he sure won't hold back in doing what I should, and it'll cost me my life as well for letting you go."

Christine started shaking even more than she already was then felt her eyes grow wet. Death had been all around her since the beginning of the war, but she herself had never been personally put in it's path. She pulled herself together and looked up at him. As she studied his face for a second, she couldn't help but wonder. "Why aren't you going to kill me?" She asked without emotion. Of course, she didn't want to die, but it was these soldiers jobs to kill people like her. He even said he could be killed for letting her go, so why would he let her pass? All these questions filled her head as she waited for him to respond.

Leon's expression turned blank for a moment. Why was he letting her live? Instead, he tried his best to smile, even if it wasn't exactly an emotion that fit into the moment. "Your kind of right, why am I letting you live, if it can cost us both our lives? I guess it would be safer if I walk you home." ,he said, "Stay close to the streetlights and walk paralel to me, not behind and definetly not in front. When we'll have to turn, I'll go first to see if anyone's there. Understand?" He then let go of her, pushed her towards the side of the building, and retreated to the middle of the street, keeping his eyes locked on her.

Christine nodded to his directions and did as he said. She noticed him staring at her, and she stared right back. Helping her or not, he was still a Nazi soldier. Letting her live and walking her home though..That wasnt anything like a soldier. Maybe he's different... She thought in her head as she waited for his movement. Maybe he's not evil like the others... Christine broke her look with him and looked straight ahead, keeping him in her peripheral vision.

Leon walked in the center of the rode the whole time. He did as he said, looking around before turning the corners, and before he knew it they were at the 4th block, if he had counted correctly. There was only one light on in one of the homes, and he figured it was the one she lived it.

Christine walked near the streetlights like he had said. She glanced at him every so often, wondering just random things about him. Name? Age? Why is he doing this? Why is he a soldier? Her mind was occupied until she noticed they were almost to her house. The lights were still on inside. She knew her parents would be worried sick about her. "The house with the lights still on." She said loud enough for him to hear.

"Well, have a good night." He chuckled, then started his way back to the block he was suppose to be on.

Christine started walking towards the door then stopped and turned around towards him. "Wait, Sir, Whats your name?" She asked. In her head, she knew he probably wouldnt answer her, but it was worth a try. He had risked his life by walking her home, and that had stuck on her.

"My name?" Leon reapeated, "I'll tell you some other time. Considering you've already broken a rule once, your bound to break them rather often. I'll be keeping a watchful eye on you."
