So, my drum major friend and I were talking about the show, and she said there's a LOT of meter changes in our 2010 show (only drum majors have the music to the whole show...). There's parts where it just keeps switching every measure...
But one of those measures is 5/8.
How would you march to things in meters with an uneven beat like that? Would you just march to the uneven conducted beat? Or...?

We played the NBA on NBC theme one year, which has some weird 3/4 and 5/4 measures in it. We just marched normally, and even if we were briefly on the wrong foot or something cause of an odd measure, once everyone started marking time it'd even out. The hardest part was stepping off at the end of a 3/4 measure because it completely goes against your instincts xD edit: You can see it here btw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMxDiiO8amw#t=3m30s

The worst we have so far is 7/4. Our first piece is the song the indoor guard used for their show, so at least there's some people that won't have a problem with it. xd But I'll definitely have some issues.
Other than that, so far there's nothing too freaky, other than 3/4 with a 6/8 feel. But we had that last year, too. (Of course, the saxes were the only ones who played that part to not be marching in 6/8...grumble.)
My friends and I think it would be awesome to march a piece called Serenade, though. xd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d30qC6bTm2o I think it would be crazy.
Edit: Oh yeah! As for marching 5/8, depending on the feel, it would probably go 123 12 or 12 123...each set of those being one beat. I don't know if I made any sense with that. xd

Usually for stuff like 3/4 or 7/4 or something, it can be evened out into evenly-stepped sets (like sets of 24 counts or something). In my freshman year's show, we had measures switching between 5/4 and 6/4, so the sets were 22 counts.

Somewhere it got a little weird and had a couple right foot step-offs, but it wasn't too bad. Who knows, maybe you'll just be at a hold during the 5/8?
I know what you mean about it being awkward, though...that song I put the link to, well, my friends and I decided to try to march it one time. It's crazy at first. xd

In show's I've done in the past our band stopped marching and did "body work" like lunges, revilays, and other dance related movements. This worked especially well in our ballade

I have yet to do a show in a normal meter. My freshman year, we had it going in some funky meter (it sounded sick though). and last year, we had our show in 10/8. We counted it one triplet two triplet three + and four +. the first two steps of the measure were short and the last two were longer. it worked out perfectly.
