The United States is a self-proclaimed "democracy" but yet it continues to possess colonies: Guam, American Samoa, United States Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The United States needs to give these territories independence because it makes the United States a hypocrite!!!

I lived down in Puerto Rico for a while. I think it should be granted if that is what the people want, while I was there, there was some discourse among the people.

Puerto Rico is my country and it doesn't belong to the United States. Puerto Rico has been a colony for 512 years. The first 400 years under Spain, and 112 years under US colonial rule. We are a different culture than the United States. We don't even speak English as our mother tongue and no one really wants to.

Neither do a lot of people in the United States. Speak English as their "mother tongue," I mean.

I can understand how you'd want Puerto Rico to become independent. That's something to bring up in front of Congress, you know, other than Puerto Rican statehood. Personally, I think it's up to the Puerto Rican people to decide, and not up to people from the States.

I think we should just ask the people of those territories what they want. Some of them, if not all, probably want to be part of the United States. While we have seen better times, we're still a great country. I'm sure the standard of living in these places has gone up since they became U.S territory.

I doubt that Puerto Rico will ever be a State of the US. We are too different from the US. Our culture is Latin and the United States is an Anglo-based culture. If statehood comes to Puerto Rico then you better be prepared to have Spanish as an official language of the country along with English. Trust me if you go to Puerto Rico, you feel like you are in another country. I love my island and I don't want it to be part of the US.
