The Do-Nots of Gold Making

As with any endeavor, there are do's and do-not's. Some of these are more obvious than others, such as begging- which is (arguably) the quickest way to get you into a social hole here on Gaia.

Safety

There will always be possibilities that present themselves to you that you should never act on. Again, never give your password to anyone promising you gold in exchange or claiming to be a moderator. Never exchange personal information or photographs for gold, or agree to lewd or sexual cyber acts in exchange for payment in Gaia gold. Not only will all of these compromise your account to being hacked or suspended, but giving up personal information compromises your personal safety as well.

Begging

Gaia is a community built upon forums and user interactions. Depending on which forum/guild/game you happen to be in, these interactions will be different. However, the general consensus is that beggars aren't willing to put the same effort into getting the items that they want that everyone else is, and therefore, are not worth helping. The normal reaction that a beggar will encounter is violent flaming and insults.

If you want to ask for something for free, there IS a proper way to do so, which will be covered later in the 'Questing' topic.

Free Gaia

What is 'Free Gaia' you may be asking? Simply put, it's things that Gaia gives away for free. Sometimes it may be gold, sometimes items. Usually the gold is in small amounts (100g) and the items are promotions from sponsors, however some popular items (such as Starmony) are freely available if you know where to look.

How It Works

Many free items are disclosed to the community via announcements. For example; this announcement. The key phrase in the announcement is "Watching it will get you a sweet new item!"

Gold works in much the same way.

With items that are not announced, however, they will often be noticed and pointed out by other members in the GCD forums or posted on TekTek.org where you can find them easily.

Is There a List of Free Items?

There is!

Click here to go there now.

Lists of items that are free come and go, and some are more complete than others- the list linked above outlines active offers only and details how to claim the free items.

Forums, Profiles, and Surfing

The oldest and most basic features of Gaia are some of the easiest ways to make gold, but are far from the most lucrative. Actively posting will earn you gold over time, but it will not be enough to fund a large quest on its own.

Forums

There are two ways to earn gold in the forums: Posting, and voting.

To start a NEW TOPIC, enter the forum appropriate for the topic you wish to create and click this button:

User Image
In guilds, you presently look for this button:
User Image

If replying to an existing topic, enter the topic and look for these buttons:

User Image
User Image

Once you've filled out your message, you'll have the option to preview or submit. Preview will show you what the message will look like before submitting- clicking submit will send the message through onto the forum.

If you're looking to vote in a poll, look for any topic that has the poll tag before the topic; It will look like this:

[Poll]

The poll will appear at the top of the thread. Simply read the question, choose an option, and click submit. You'll be rewarded with a small amount of gold.

Profiles

Much in the same way that you obtain gold for posting in the forums, you also get gold for posting profile comments and posting journal entries. These are also small amounts of gold.

However, be aware of 'spam' type profile comments, like this:
User Image

These are considered chain letters and are prohibited by Gaia ToS, which means that spreading these are an easy way to get yourself banned. And, it goes without saying, none of them work.

Surfing

Everyone on Gaia surfs, this is simply the act of moving from one page to another. Most of us don't pay attention to this, but this rewards you with small (usually 2-3) amounts of gold. Again, this isn't an amount that's going to get you an item you're questing with any amount of speed, but it will (slowly) contribute to your total as you move about the web site.

Daily Chance

Daily Chance is one of the easiest ways to earn free items and gold on a regular basis. Unless you're very lucky, it's not going to be a very impressive item- but it's constant and always there, and will always give you something. Not to shabby, right?

How It Works

Every day, you'll want to visit the Landing Pages. You can get there by clicking each of these tabs;

User Image

Home, My Gaia, Shops, Forums, World, and Games. On each of these tabs, you'll see on the right side of the header, a daily chance icon. This has had several incarnations throughout the history of Gaia, though it will generally look like a prize game you may see in an arcade.

User ImageUser Image

Click it, and it will grant you a reward.

If you keep up with an aquarium, visit it daily and click on the Overseer or Jaws. They look like this-

User ImageUser Image

The Overseer is usually present in the tank, and seems to be presently- however, there was a period following Halloween 2k9 in which he was absent and replaced by Jaws, so I'll leave the picture here just in case the sprites should ever change again.

Regardless of what's there to click on, they give you the exact same prizes.

Their rewards are similar to Daily Chance in quality.

There are also other options that will generally appear in your headers, and these are sponsor games and activities (appears as a television) and the cash tree, which links you to various offers to earn Gaia Cash.

User ImageUser Image

Anything of Value?

There are prizes of value in the Daily Chance. Notably, some inks which are on the more common side, sometimes larger sums of gold- and popularly, NPC underpants and bras.

Who doesn't want NPC undies?

Games

Gaia has several games which offer moderate gold prizes. More than posting but still not quite enough to fund a major quest on their own. I'll cover some of the basics of each game here, though for in depth information you'll need to refer to a dedicated guide.

Fishing

One of the older games on Gaia, you can play here. You need a fishing rod (you get a basic rod for free just for being a member) and some bait, available from Logan. The basic rod is pretty hard to work with, but it'll work if you're a beginner fishing in Bass'Ken lake. The better your bait, the better the fish you can catch, but using grade A does not guarantee that you'll catch the best fish in the pond. It just ups your chances.

Once you've gathered some fish, you can sell them on the marketplace or sell them to Logan for a profit.

The game is simple- click to cast your line, then once a fish bites, move your mouse to keep the bobber between the red lines or the fish will get away. Takes some practice and is sometimes extremely frustrating.

Pinball

Played here.

Also fairly simple- operate the flippers with the Z and / keys on your keyboard and keep the ball in play as long as possible. There are various powerups offered, which can be cycled through with the arrows and activated with the up arrow.

The down arrow pulls the plunger to activate the ball.

There are various different prizes offered depending on how many points you earn.

Jigsaw

Jigsaw puzzles can be played here.

A very simple game, choose your difficulty and assemble the puzzle. Gold awarded will depend on the difficulty of the puzzle and how many puzzles you have done already on a steady decline. Sometimes you will get a purple bubble indicating an additional bonus prize- this bonus prize is granted in addition to gold upon completion of the puzzle.

Slots

Play here.

Purchase tokens at Gold Mountain. Choose to play one, two, or three- then pull the lever on the slot machine.

If you match two symbols, you receive back what you bet.

Match three, and your winnings will depend on the shape matched and the bet you placed. It will range anywhere from five to three-hundred thousand points.

Winnings can be played, or exchanged for tickets- which can be sold or exchanged for items at Prize & Joy (Which can, in turn, be sold.)

Black Jack

Played here.

As in real black jack, the aim is to get to twenty-one without going over. Purchase tokens from Gold Mountain, place a bet at the beginning of each hand, and then as each hand progresses you'll have the option to Hit (take another card), Double Down (Take one more card and double your bet- ending your turn), or Stand (Stop taking cards and end your turn.)

If you tie with the dealer, it's known as a Push and the bets from the current hand carry over to the next.

As you accumulate winnings, these can be converted to tickets. Tickets can be sold on the marketplace, or traded for prizes at Prize and Joy that you can keep or sell for gold.

Word Bump

Played here.

The objective of the game is to click letters to form words, thereby eliminating the blocks and allowing the golden blocks to move upwards towards the top of the screen and into the goal area to clear each round. As you progress, you earn more gold and credits that can be exchanged for caps and gowns.

You also earn power-ups as you clear blocks of different colors that can be used to clear words more quickly. If moving too slowly, new blocks will drop- and as with any time oriented block dropping game, if the golden blocks drop too low, the game will end.

Electric Love Factory

Play it here.

The odd game of connecting circuits.

The objective is to finish a circuit from point A to point B, which is completed by dragging columns and rows and rotating individual pieces of the machine to make the circuit work.

The circuit is indicated by a bright electrical trail between two volts that must meet without intersecting any vampire volts before your power meter runs out. Upon completing a series of circuits, gold and prizes are awarded.

Dumpster Dive

Try your luck here.

This is categorized as a game by Gaia, but this is a luck based random item acquisition system. You can donate items to the dumpster from your inventory (click the Donate button after clicking the item- if the item is rare, Pete will ask you to confirm) and then it will go into the dumpster for other Gaians to grab. If there is a shortage of user-donated items in the dumpster, Admin will throw in trash items such as crumpled paper and paper bags.

The item you get will be something donated by another Gaian or the Admin. It can be, literally, anything- though most items that end up in the dumpster are inexpensive.

And, for any who were wondering--
--you can totally grab your own items back if you get there quick enough and are lucky.
User Image

Tiles

Played here.

The objective of this game is to make the longest path possible by connecting tiles that have something in common- such as the same character or the same colored background. Once you click on a tile, any possible connections will be visible and any tiles that you can NOT connect to will be darkened.

Smash Blox

Played here.

Smash Blox is a tournament game in which the objective is to eliminate colored blocks in groups of 3 or more to clear as much of the playing board as possible- with more space cleared and more rounds passed resulting in higher scores. This game requires that you pay to play, and you must have the highest score to get any pay-out in return.

Booty Grab

One of the most popular means of making gold on Gaia is Booty Grab. The game is played in aquariums, is very simple, and can be very lucrative if you keep at it and find a good tank or community of tanks.

How It Works

Many users display their aquariums in their signatures. These aquariums often 'glow' with the text Booty Grab on them. By clicking one of these aquariums, you'll be taken into the mini game. It's one of the easiest games on Gaia- all you have to do is move your mouse along the screen and collect coins as they fall.

Power-ups and power-downs will move across the screen (blue and red, respectively) which you can try to hit and miss at your leisure. They will increase/decrease your speed, increase/decrease the amount of gold being dropped by the fish, increase/decrease the size of the shell you use to catch coins, or increase/decrease your remaining time.

The amount of gold you make will depend on the tank you are in, the status effects you hit, and which fish happened to be glowing when you entered the game. There is no set amount of gold you can gain from Booty Grab. It can be anywhere from several hundred to several thousand per play.

Looking for Tanks?

We all stumble upon tanks from time to time, but the best place to check is the official Aquarium forum. There are many guilds dedicated to BG, though their quality and activity level varies.

Gaia Aquarium Forum
Glow threads are great to look for especially if they're advertising a specific type of tank that is known to be lucrative- such as Dolphins, Water Meats, or any type of Mini Monster.

zOMG

zOMG, Gaia's MMO, is a popular way by which to earn gold though it DOES require a bit of sense if you're going to have any luck at it. For instance, you're going to need to know how to play well with others if you want the good loot. You're really not going to have much luck doing the Shallow Seas and EndBoss on hard for all the loot by yourself on the hard setting.

How Does it Work?

Launch zOMG here.

Gaia has a decent overview of the gameplay and functions here, I recommend reading it if you've never played before.
There is also a wonderful in-guild guide here for anyone looking to familiarize themselves with the game.

The objective of the game is to collect rings, defeat Animated, and progress through the game to the completion of Chapter One (which I'm not going to spoil for you here) and help various different NPC's along the way. Where do you make gold?

For every animated you defeat, for every NPC you help, or every chest you open- you get loot and rewards which generally include gold. This can add up pretty quickly, but there are two places that most experienced users like to go to accumulate gold (and, if leveling rings still, orbs) which I will cover below. These are the two places that are generally easiest to find parties of random players, though again, you get gold for doing just about anything in zOMG. There's even a Daily Chance in virtually every area you can visit.

Papa Saw

Papa Saw is located in Bass'Ken lake, in the saw mill. In order to get in as a party leader you must have completed Gustav's storyline. The CL cap is 5.0.

You can get in sooner if you are in a party with a leader that has access.

Upon entering, it is considered common courtesy that you NOT TRIGGER THE FIGHT. The saws will not attack until you move too far into the room. As long as you stay to the left, the fight will not start. Starting the fight before everyone is prepared is an easy way to get yelled at and potentially kicked out of the party. It is also generally preferred here that the group stay together, as many people bring Area of Effect rings that become useless if party members run around and scatter the saws.

From experience, I personally have kicked party members who were refusing to stay with the group after multiple warnings. Not only does it make some of the stronger attacks moot but it makes the people further away harder to heal and damages the party as a whole. Make sure you listen to your party leader- if they request that you stay in one place, do so! If they request that you run somewhere, do so!

As always, if your party seems to be consistently dead, perhaps it's best to detach yourself from the group and seek a stronger party. Papa Saw on hard isn't a particularly difficult fight with a full crew- if the group is perpetually getting killed on every try then something somewhere is going wrong. Find a group with a dedicated healer, or a group that does a more dedicated buff check before going in. There will be good groups, and there WILL be bad groups. Don't let the bad ones discourage you. Just pop out gracefully and give it another go with someone else :3

As a leader, remember, pay attention and rid the group of anyone who seems to be pulling the group down or leeching. If there's someone not lifting a finger to help, kick them- removing a dead weight will dynamically scale the fight down to the remaining number of people, and the fight will become easier and increase your chances for survival. Always make choices for the best of your group- there's almost always people who want to fight Papa Saw and do so legitimately.

Shallow Seas / End Boss

Shallow Seas will take longer to get to, and the expectations here will be higher. By this point, you'll be expected to have a decent selection of buffs to choose from. At Papa Saw, you might be able to get away with 'All I have are these two buffs.' Here, when buff check time comes around, everyone is generally expected to be able to make a compromise SOMEWHERE to ensure that all buffs can be covered. Does that mean you have to have every buff? No, just make sure you don't have nothing but super common ones that everyone else is going to bring to a party. It will also be expected that you already know how to efficiently play in a party, mob enemies in large numbers (many groups prefer playing this way, though not all do), and that you'll have at least a few hours to dedicate to Shallow Sea runs when you sit down and agree to join the party. Once a group enters the area, it's difficult to go back and recruit.

That being said, Shallow Sea is found at the northern edge of Gold Beach inside the whirlpool. The area is CL 10, takes a long time to complete, but contains a great deal of treasure.

In order to access the Shallow Seas you must have completed the game through the Otami Ruins and be ready to take on the endboss. A good Shallow Seas run will be worth about 15k in profit (20k if you have good luck boosts) and can be repeated multiple times with a good party.

In the first area, there are five treasure chests. Two in the lower area, and three clustered together north of the tail near Queen Lorelei. In the next area, the Undersea Ledge, there are two more chests, followed by one in the area where Marshall leaves the group, and one more where the key to the Sealab is found. This is usually where Shallow Sea runs end, though some groups will kill the Robo Fish for the loot drops and then suicide in the compound its self.

Shallow Seas runs can not be successful without good buffs, good communication, and good organizational skills. It's generally accepted that only the party leader will open chests and dictate which route through the coral to take.

If your group is fighting EndBoss and going through the compound, it is generally accepted that you do not touch any switches and let the party leader decide who is stationed at which switch or on flipping duty, and that the Security Chief mobs and NeXus should not be killed because doing so causes all other labtechs to respawn.

When fighting the ACTUAL EndBoss? Listen to your party leader ;3 The fight isn't too difficult when you have a good party, even on the hardest difficulty setting.

Dead Mans Shadow

Often referred to as DMS in-game, this area is found near Bill's Ranch and is for CL10+ players. Once your rings are maxed to CL10, this is where you want to go to continue to improve them as this is where Dark Orbs drop.

You WILL need a competent party.
You WILL need a dedicated healer.
You WILL need all buffs.
You WILL NEED A SOLAR RAYS RING. Otherwise you may be eaten by a wandering Grue.

It is completely up to you if you wish to try and farm DMS as a source of gold- it is the hardest area of the game, and you will need several hours to devote to the game, particularly if you have never been far enough to be attuned to use the shortcut through the two mazes.

The enemies here are vicious and plentiful, and Kam at the end is a very difficult boss. Take your time here and listen to your party leader.

Crafting

As always, you can craft. You'll pick up recipes and materials all over the place as rewards and in loot- to convert a recipe and materials into a finished product, visit Nicolae at Back Alley Bargains and click the 'Make Recipes' button below him.

All the options available to you will pop up. You can craft your items here for the required materials and gold, then if you choose, you can sell the resulting product.

Vending

Vending should only be attempted once you've accumulated a fair amount of gold already; you really can't start vending with nothing so start from, though there are a few easy tricks that I'll cover that can help you earn gold a bit quicker so that you can start vending higher price items.

A word of caution about vending;

While vending is a great way to earn gold, there is always risk that you will lose gold as well. Vending is based on current market prices. A good deal today may end up draining you tomorrow. Careless vending will cost you.

Vend at your own risk.

Trading Pass

Before you can exchange anything at all, you'll need a trading pass. To get this, you'll need 500g and your account will need to be at least three days old. Once these conditions are satisfied, navigate to Shops > Trade.

This will bring you to the Bank of Gambino. Agatha will inform you if you do not have a trading pass, and will offer to sell you one. Simply confirm when prompted, and you'll be good to go.

If you don't have a trading pass already, I highly recommend making it one of your first priorities. Without access to the trade system, you won't be able to receive gifts or gold donations by any means other than the Gift System and you won't be able to set up any agreements where you can send items in exchange.

Easy Ways to Get Started

Low Price items and crafted items are easy ways to get started. For instance, you may choose to hoard inexpensive cash items (Such as the Little Princeling) until they inflate or you may choose to buy old promotional items that are listed low and sell them higher. This is still vending, though the margin for profit is low because the items are inexpensive.

You can also craft items (zOMG items, trash items, fish items, tattoos) relatively cheap and then sell the resulting item on the marketplace for more than the cost of making the item its self. The profit for this will depend on the item, always do your research on the cost of materials and crafting compared to the average buy price of the item.

The Exchange

More often than not, you'll find the best deals in the exchange forum. The key here is to be patient and understand that you may have to bid a bit before you get the item you want, and by the time the bidding is over, it may not be a deal at all.

The exchange forum is a great place to find inventory sales, charities, donations, or people who are leaving Gaia and trying to sell everything as cheaply as possible just to get rid of it. You can also post what you want here, what you're offering, and let people come to you.

When in the marketplace, there are a few terms you'll see.

or means Selling or Buying, respectively. T/O generally means taking offers or trading.

WTB, WTS, and WTT are essentially the same but not used as often- Want to Buy, Want To Sell, Want To Trade.

LMP is "Low Market Price." AMP is "Average Market Price." AB is "Auto Buy" and indicates the price at which the seller will stop considering bids and automatically send the trade.

Lowball is a term thrown out when an offer is insultingly low. For example, if I'm selling an item with a LMP of 2 million gold and someone offers me 500k, I lose 1.5 million on the deal if I accept. This isn't a good deal by any means and the person offering probably knows this already.

And, as always, once an agreement has been made, make sure you check your trades before you accept them. If you can't see the item you agreed to buy or the correct amount of gold, then do not confirm.

Vending in the MP

Once you have some gold saved up, you can start vending in the MP. This takes patience, and practice. There will be days when you lose gold.

Items that are good to vend are items that are either high price, such as old MC's, new MC's that are in high demand, RIG's/CI's, recent Cash Shop items, or EI's. You should also collect on any abnormally low listing you find so that you can sell the item back for a higher price.

RIG/CI's, for example, sell very quickly when unopened. If you purchase them when they're available in the cash shop and hold onto them for several months when they've been out of the cash shop, they will slowly go up in value. Once their value has gone up, you can sell them and make a tidy profit.

If looking for immediate gratification, you can look for low listings, buy them, and immediately sell them for higher. You can also purchase low in the exchange and immediately sell them back on the marketplace closer to the average selling price. The danger here comes from undercutting- as others trying to sell their wares will list their items for cheaper than yours (sometimes only 1g cheaper- though this is strongly frowned upon by pretty much everyone) and if the buy prices keep getting undercut, the price of the item can be driven down significantly.

Patience is the key with vending. You WILL need gold to get started, and some days will be better than others.

Chance Items

Chance Items are based purely on luck. Some users have great results from them, other users never will. It's up to you whether or not you try, but there is no guarantee that you will find profit here.

Random Item Generators / Chance Items are a staple of the cash shop nowadays. One comes out every month. If you want to play your chances, grab one of the items (or a bundle) and crack it open. Depending on the item, you can click through or solve a puzzle. You'll usually end up with one of several random scenarios, or progress through levels with decreasing odds of progressing further.

The epic prizes are incredibly rare, and the majority of plays will result in failure and a consolation prize.

As a result, I advise that you play these at your own risk.

Questing

Questing is time consuming, but generally worth the effort if you genuinely put some love into it. The masses can tell when you care and when you don't, and if they know you don't care they're not going to donate.

Your Thread

For general tips on creating a thread, click here. It goes to an in-depth thread creation guide.

If making a thread in guilds (for example, this one) make sure that you're putting it in the right place. The NSTG has a dedicated "Item Quests" subforum but all guilds are different so ensure that you are familiar with the rules of each guild and subforum, respectively.

If in the main forums, you'll want to post your quest thread here in the charity and quest portion of the Exchange.

Now What?

Once you have your thread, you need to actively bump it. Have your friends chat with you in it. Keep it alive, keep it active, make sure you have your quest progress up to date and ensure that the thread seems lively and fun.

Is the front page appealing to look at? Does it appear that you've made decent progress already? Is there civilized conversation going on? Has the thread been alive for more than a few days? These are all good signs that will make people start considering that you're serious about your quest, and they'll consider donating to you. If you only make one uninteresting post saying you're questing, nobody is going to care.

Your quest thread needs to be like a second home to you until the quest is completed, whether you're getting massive donations from it or not. A quest thread should be supplemental only- you shouldn't rely on it as your main source of income. Go out and play games or grind in zOMG to make your progress bar go up a bit on your own.

User Run Services

What are user run services? Anything from art shops to auctions, if it's within ToS and you can gain from it, you can do it.

What can I Participate in?

The easy answer to this, is to say search around and see what you can find. What's out there changes daily. There are literally thousands of contests out there that are either free or cheap to enter, though again, enter at your own risk. If you choose to enter a TekTek contest, make sure you're positive of your TekTek skills and not entering with no idea of what you're going to do. There are users who will pay others to bump their threads, and users who will pay you to advertise their content in your signature.

Enter giveaways, free contests, free lottos, find a free charity that you qualify for. The possibilities are endless.

What Can I Make?

Minishops are extremely popular on Gaia. A large chunk of the userbase purchases avatar art, or pixel pets or some variety of collectible that they can display in their journal or profile. If you have any sort of drawing talent, you can likely sell it.

Start a bump service. Offer to bump a thread x amount of times for a given amount of gold per bump- though, if you do this, be realistic. Don't promise 1,000 bumps because you'd be working on it forever. Smaller increments like 25 and 50 are easier to work in.

There are multiple possibilities. Find something that you have the time for, set up a dedicated thread, and try to bring customers in.
