I'm planning on getting a booth at Toracon 2011 with my friends making plushies (they'll be doing art). For the plushies, I was wondering if it's okay to use someone else's pattern, or do I have to steer clear and make up my own stuff to keep away from copyright laws? Or is this something I should look up on the con website?

I'm capable of making my own patterns if I have to.....

It all depends, I think it would be best 2 check the cons site. But if u are thinking of something like a pikachu thing its probably fine. I would check just 2 be sure.

Definitely check the con website. If it doesn't specifically list what is not allowed and you think something might be borderlining copyright law, you might want to contact the AA admin on the site.
For plushies you should make your own patterns. There might be steps to be able to use someone else's that involve signatures and complications, but if you can make your own pattern, even if it's similar but not exactly alike, you avoid all copyright intrusion.

If you use someone's pattern, check their site too.
Some people allow others to use their patterns for profit and some have disclaimers that the pattern can not be used for profitable benefits, only for personal use. I've seen some patterns that actually give limits to the number of items you can sell using the pattern. I really don't understand how they can keep up with the numbers.

As long as you're not selling the pattern you should be perfectly fine using it. Try altering it a tad though.
