So. I wasted over an hour of my life writing crap!! WARNING SPOILERS DUH OVARR HEEEREConstructive crit would be rlly great. Good job! It was well written and quite entertaining. Also, after reading it, I can now see that Ling being fused with Greed is no accident. Greed is Ling's sin. Nods in satisfaction.

I love the storybook feel to this! Man I wish you were in my dojin circle! haha I had all the pages splayed out in my mind as I read this!
With that aside I enjoyed this very much. I love how you wrote all of this in a seemingly perfect-stitch way. I like how you didn't try to make it a perfect ending. You just put it how it would be and how it will be.
I like to focus on the tragedy of his life as I write myself. It always strikes a pin in my side when I see people have him marry Lanfan. As much as I know they love each other the writers don't realize that its practically taboo. the emperor could have whatever he wanted but he wouldn't be respected if he took her into his harem.

Glad to have the approval of the infamous Crimson Alchemist 3nodding Greed is definitely Lin's sin, they're good together.
@ greedling, saaaaaaaaaame. I hate reading fanfics ('cos, no offense to anyone, and I know I'm being a huuuge hypocrite, but most of them are so OOC and fangirly and just... crap.) so I don't read them often. But I'm aware of the huge amount of fanfics which just idealises everything and just ignore parts of the original story to suit themselves.
Like, Lin and Lanfan getting married. You're right, it's impossible for two people with such a huge gap in the social ladder to just be together, never mind get married. And as Bubbles says in one of her fics (sorry, I worship her fics, it's unhealthy), Lanfan would hate being an emperor's wife anyway, because it's just sitting in bed waiting your turn. And Lanfan's not made for that.

I like VERY FEW fanfics that twist story line besides SIN HEARt and a few LJ buddies of mine who would kill me if I said otherwise *cough* sky_dark*cough* aww shes not that violent~
*cough* anyways where was I? oh yah... I appreciate a good well written AU but an AU is just that: alternate Universe - Alternate outcome.
I can understand them makeing an AU where Lanfan is a princess candidate (Does anyone else realize xing has a LOT of incest going on?)
That being said Lanfan in the real FMA world isnt of the emperors blood so even if she was a noble there would be no possible way she could become a candidate unless: there was no princess for the clan and even then she would have to be the most beautiful of the nobles to be elected. Lanfans an average looking girl.

I think I've thought about the incest but not very deeply before. I assume that people from the same clan are loosely related but not closely enough to turn out babies with three heads and stuff like that xD
I think I also assumed that the emperor wouldn't take a wife from his own clan. But now thinking about that, that'd make no sense 'cos then you wouldn't be giving your own clan a shot at being the next emperor.
*is enjoying v. muchly this conversation* I love hearing other intelligent peeps' views and interpretations of pairings and situations and stuffs.

Is it safe to say that Xing is FMA version of Las Vegas? Laughes really hard. Seriously though, China does have a rich history and culture. I would love to know more about it myself but I already have to much "catching up" to do as it is. It sucks that I can't multi-task. Frowns in disappointment.

xingnese culture: The emperor takes the highest standing woman of each clan as his wives. If there is not a princess then the purest most beautiful nobel woman who is considered worthy would become the replacement for the princess.
THERE IS TONS OF INCEST *shivers* He would be marrying his half sisters and possibly his full blood sisters. =_= *feels sorry for Ling*
But remember that Xing is a pharmacy nation. They might be able to cure genetics diseases with a simple transmutation.

I'm Chinese (by blood but not by nature - a banana you might say, yellow on the outside but white on the inside xD) and I know nothing~~ But awesome, you study the place!!
Eeewww. That's kinda, urrgh. Poor Lin. Full blood sisters. EEWWW. But yeah, I s'pose, their medical alchemy is pretty advanced. So if any kid ends up with three heads it can get fixed? xDD
But I suppose Lin is used to this kind of thing and it's the norm for him. BUT STILL. EEWW burning_eyes

Mhmm *nods* I'm mostly studied on japanese and norse culture right now but I decided to move on. Im a writer/mangaka so I have to be well studied.
Well think of it this way, he grew up in a culture where that was acceptable. Love wasn't taboo amongst genetics, just amongst rank. There is more males in his country (since its based off china) so Gay and Bisexuals are common. There for they arnt considered a big deal like in other countries. Its just a life style. In amestresia however the individual who was gay or bisexual would be shunned and denied certain privileges.
The same goes with incest however. a royal can only be in contact with other royals legally. There for as long as their society has been substained they have always been inbreeding. HOWEVER he have sex with whomever he chooses. Say Lanfan or Ed. He could have a one night stay or sleep with them daily but Ed would never be welcomed to court and if Lanfan ahd a child it would be considered a b*****d; a fatherless boy.
So, if it was common inn your culture would it be so disgusting to your eyes? Ling grew up with it so he probably doesn't understand how it is wrong.

A concubine and wife is the same thing when we bring in the harem. a concubine is basically a lesser wife while the empress or queen is the main wife both are wives though. Here is the thing though. -A empress is of highest rank; sometimes even considered a higher rank then the emperor. she or he is the high wife and will be the one who gets the most attention from the king as well as a political ground. She can deny and tease the emperor to a certain level. - A consort is a lower rank wife. Her job is more or less a whores and mothers combined. She or He is to help the king relax, pleasure the king, please the king, see to the kings every whim, grit their teeth if the king feels to punish them, raise his children, educate his children in his wanted way. Ed and Lanfans status wouldn't change from sleeping with Ling. their status would stay the same public or not. every one has their personal views though and may think down of them or highly of them. Ahaah, I get it. Different ranks of wives. Anatolia, huh? You may not be talking about China at all but if Xing works like that it would make sense. It would be cool for Arakawa to write a book on the little details of the FMA world. I mean, there's probably stuff in the profile books but only the 1st has been translated into English.
