Presumably we'll find out eventually. I don't think they've explained that yet. (*gasp* unless I missed something!! *furiously rereads recent chapters*) It obviously has something to with Father though. Apearantly he has control over alchemy?
If anyone else has more insights I would love to hear them!

If anyone else has more insights I would love to hear them! Their Alchemy is different. Father cut off the "Eastern Alchemy" The one Ed and Al uses, but Scar's Alchemy is Western, and so is May Chang's. Unless May's is Eastern and Ed and Al's is Western, but you get the basic picture right?

other way around; Amestrian alchemy is Western, and Xingese alkhestry is Eastern 3nodding but i think the reason Father was able to "turn off" the use of Western alchemy is because he's directly related to it's creation. remember, Ed, Al or Marcoh (can't remember which) explained to Mei that Western alchemy uses the power that comes from the teconic plates underneath the earth, but Mei then goes on to think that this assumption/teaching is incorrect, and it's something very different.
there's also the fact it's been implied Hoenheim taught/advanced Eastern alchemy, and Hoenheim is able to use alchemy even when Ed and Al cannot. he may have taught the Xingese the specific alchemic method to oppose Father.
EDIT: to continue, now that i'm not rushing to go eat dinner...
when Mei thought that it wasn't seismic energy that powers Western alchemy, she commented that it was more like the power of many people moving. it's hard to say if this was referring to the amount of people living in Amestris, especially since Amestris conquered neighbouring countries in order to make itself bigger, or if this was actually a nod to Father and the souls of the people of Xerxes inside him (as well as the Homunculi).
come to think of it, Father has all those pipes, cables and tubes everywhere inside of Central, and if i remember correctly, he's been seen connected to them for some known reason at some point or another...

Unless May's is Eastern and Ed and Al's is Western, but you get the basic picture right? Amestrian Alchemy is called "alchemy" and Father has control over it. Xingese alchemy however is called "alkahestry" (or at least I've encountered it translated this way) and it is not under Father's influence.

Ahaha, You explained it much better than I did. sweatdrop I'm still waiting for a really comprehensive explination of the roots of Amestrian alchemy and how it is related to Father, though. I hope we get one before the manga ends. I would be really annoyed if it is never explained more thoroughly.
