I would love to be a mentee heart
I don't get on gaia that much nowadays, but I can start getting back on more ^^ I get on the computer everyday, at least 30 minutes, so I would be an active mentee, and I will be able to submit work in a reasonable time frame.

@ Fergi
Yep, you can be my mentee
Hmmm, I checked your gallery Based on that self improvement meme, you've done well but you still have a long way to go for your artworks still have distinct flaws you have a style close to anime yet there are some non anime works of yours which shows potential
Here's a couple of your works which I think are your +

Improve on these styles perhaps rather than focus on anime like stuff But if you want to improve in manga style, I suggest reading a manga or watching anime as reference
Just to know where we'd start our course I'd challenge you on one art work
[ Challenge ] Theme: King of Pentacles - it's one of the minor arcana tarot cards Here's a reference: http://www.learntarot.com/pkg.htm I want you to make not a tarot card but an image about that tarot card Thus, I want you to make a landscape pic, not a portrait You don't need to color it, I'll just check on your style and how you can work with ideas as reference
- try to describe it, tell me what's on the picture and how it relates to the king of pentacles.

@Fiametta
Alright :"]
I checked your gallery I characterize your art work to be anime your + is in coloring the traditional way but perhaps your works are flawed by the anime anatomy, lack in background, and weak concept let's work on polishing your + and at the same time remedy those flaws I can't help you much in anatomy work, I'll try to give comment and pointers about it though

the background doesn't compliment much on the art style but I like the way you colored the character
so here's a challenge for me to know where we'd start
[ Challenge ] Theme: One of the Seven deadly sins " Greed " - you know what that is orientation: landscape no need to color it for now, but you may if you wish to. - relate a description of your work to " greed " - try to work on the expression

>w< awesomeness. I'm a little confused about the challenge, though, do you want it just be a landscape, like no people, or can I add people as long as there's a landscape? Also, is there a deadline for this?

@ Fergi
the orientation of the art work is landscape means width is longer than the height you can add subject of course, people and whatever
there's no deadline as long as you pass before all the mentee slots get taken. that challenge art work is your registration to get on the mentee list :"]

@Fergi
The art is good You've shown effort in adding details to your work You also showed that you understand the subject, for you've portrayed the king of pentacles well
But there are a few flaws in the composition
I won't judge your art style much, I think you can still improve it. ... are you using 1,2,3 yellow pencils or the H, B, HB ones Read about them, they'll help improve your artwork
There are a lot of stuff in your art work It's good that you placed less detail on the background mountain But I think it would be better to make it steeper and the lake more centered and wider
Having the tree on the left adds something on the composition But the bottom part is kinda awkward and you need to fix the leaves, darken it The peacocks [ birds ] on the tree are kind of merging it's tail with the leaves Make it appear more, add details, make it a little bigger, darken the lines
The cat's kinda cute But it would've been better if you did complete it's body Also the table and the kid [ The kid's kinda awkward, place him somewhere else or don't place him there at all ] Complete the base of the table
The king's clothes are good work on it's detail and I think you need to make his face more expressive [ imagine a kind and generous face ] his body needs to be bigger make him fat or muscular earth and gold are solid elements thus the king needs to compliment it's elements
Also move him closer to the camera thus make him bigger [ I'll advise you go practice anatomy through studying human poses ] Move him to the right more so that the subject is not too centered [ Rule of Thirds... google it, it helps ] [ Also Golden Ratio... it's mathematical stuff, but it helps too ]
I like the lamp it's pole needs to be thicker though and the gate needs to be lower add arrow head tips for the rest the arrow head tips needs to be not much of a triangle but more of a tear shape
Look for reference for those vines
I like how you designed the tea cups and tea pot Their placement on the table needs work to and there's something wrong about the tea pot's handle
- - - - -
You are now my mentee Congratulations ...
I'll let you work on these first
Submit in order
1. Basic Geometric Shapes and Shading - Cube, Sphere, Cylinder, Cone, Pyramid, Donut - Draw them and shade them, light source on 10:00
2. Complicate Things - Crumpled Paper, Flower, Apple, Tea Cup - Draw them and shade them, light source on 2:00
3. More Detailed work - Land scape, House
4. People - Full body of a character
* work on your style
Perhaps these maybe tedious so I'll let you work on these till 2nd week of February
Submit your journal report in this thread weekly though Just tell how you're doing

Woot! I didn't get references for anything in the piece, so that's probably one reason it had so many flaws sweatdrop I already knew what the rule of thirds was, but not the golden ratio. Is it bad that I cringed when I looked up the golden ratio? eek math is so evil, because you need it everywhere OTL I don't know what you mean by yellow pencils, do you mean like pencils you'd use for school? I'm using derwent sketching pencils, and a .5 mechincal pencil with pentel lead sweatdrop I forgot what variations of hardness I used sweatdrop The case look almost exactly like this To tell you the truth I had no idea what to put behind the fence, so I just put down some lines ><;;; I hate how it came out >< Do you want me to work on fixing that while I'm doing the assignments?

@ Fergi
about the golden ratio stuff it's similar to law of thirds [ rule of thirds follow the golden ratio stuff ] http://masaakikaji.deviantart.com/art/Fibonacci-233-121416489 check on the links it helps :"]
No need to do most of the maths Just study the concept
Yellow pencils are the ones commonly used at schools ... their the ones having grades 1,2,3 1 being the darkest and 3 being the lightest Light pencils are used for sketching, as well as light shades Dark pencils are used for shading and doing the line work
There are techniques in doing pencil shading --- cross hatching, smudging, stippling whatever, I can discuss that if you want to
.5 mechanical pencil hmmm mech pencils are often used in doing the rough draft I assume your using the mech pen for that
I usually use the light shades first before I got for the detailed dark shades [ I don't have any of my traditional works in my gallery XD ]
Lotus flowers or water lilies on the lake will be good Just look for reference images Lots of reference images I store piles of magazines under my bed Their my quick references
You may fix that challenge work it's optional but is a plus point wink

I've been looking for reference images online, on DA's awesome stock gallery heart Because the only magazines I have in my room are 20 issues of Shonen Jumps, and maybe a prom dress catalog that came in the mail to every single girl in high school xd (it is a pretty good place for references for dresses though >.>)
I'm probably going to be able to sleep today until I finish that piece xd
Noob Question Time~ Could you show me an example of something lit at 10:00? ><
