Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place, I'm not completely sure. sweatdrop

Since my mom saved me from having to save up for my easel this Christmas, I've decided to save up for a sewing machine so I can learn to make some lolita clothing. The prices for them are so diverse though, I have no idea which ones will be reliable or a rip-off!
So I was wondering, what's a good price for one or a place to purchase?

With my experience with sewing machines I would recomend a Singer sewing machine, dont go with Brother because I bought a Brother sewing machine and it broke on me the first day I used it X(

For prices on Singers, they range from 150$ to almost 600$
and there is plenty of prices in between.

I would say that your probably looking at something like $100-$150, minimum. What you need to do is look at the features of different machines and figure out what you need. At the very least, your going to want to be able to straight stitch, and zigzag stitch. make sure it can, in fact, stitch backwards (so that you can back-tack). you'll probably want to be able to change the stitch length, and over time, the presser foot.

A- Storebought, less than 100$ is fishy. More than $400 is a waste unless you're a pro, but by then you'll know what machine you want anyway regardless of cost. Go for about $200 range. Buy a well known brand from a well known store or at least get a warranty. My machine is acting funny, and I always know I can take it back to Joannes to send it in for repairs or anywhere else because most people know how to work that brand. As long as it's well known, singer (mine), Husqvarna/viking, it will most likely be quality and easy to find someone to fix it just in case. Warranted slips are a lifesaver. Make sure you know what it covers.

B- Ask mom's friends. Many people have good working machines that they just don't use because they have an even better one. This is a good way to get second hand machines, because why would mom's friend lie to you about it not working? Avoid pawn shops. sad

C- If you're a beginner, TELL THEM, and you will get a less confusing machine!!! My mom has a seger/progamable-embroiderer/doeslotsofothercoolstuff, and it's absolutely terrifying. A friend of mine has one that looks like a kids toy that only sews basic stitch with adjustable length and width, and mine is somewhere in the middle with lots of doodads and gizmoes for ruffling, buttons, and fancy patterns. If you want to do more, ASK! Someone will most likely be glad to tell you how to do the cool stuff on your new machine. The CD's don't help as much as seeing someone do it in real life.

Brothers are actually good machines, I have an electronic Brother I got for just under 200 2 years ago and it has never broken on me. It does decoration stitches, all sorts of buttonholes, and many other stitches (up to 150). The thing with a sewing machine, any at all, is that if you don't know how to fix them when one breaks you give up on the brand all together. I have a serger that is from Singer that gives me headaches because when that things wants a thread to break you'll be spending a tleast 15mins re-threading the damn thing. For beginners Brothers and Singers are what I always see people using, my grandma uses a Brother she has had for over 15 years >..>

Yes I believe my aunt uses a Brother and she swears by it, but I have my grandmas Singer from the 60s(yes it has broken twice, but amazingly still works great), though it does get annoying when you have to re-thread XD. I still like my super old singer better than my *returned* Brother and my aunts Brother, I guess it just really depends on the specific machine not the brand, since both are good.

hmm, I've never seen the brothers that do all that. Just the ones for super beginners that just straight stitch, the ones at Wallmart, and those were rather lousy. Those would be the only ones I have experience with though, so if you say the rest are pretty good, I'll take your word for it.

www... I am glad to come across this thread because i need to pick one up for myself. Maybe having one of my own will drown out the fear of them.
