Lolita is to cosplay what an H&M dress is to a sexy-cop mini-dress.

That being said, have any of you ever worn a regular lolita/kodona outfit to a convention as a costume?

Do any of you own cosplay quality lolita or themed lolita outfits for the purpose of cosplaying?

Do you despise cosplay?

Or do you shuck* the bonnets and run around in ninja attire for the weekend? Got pics?

How do YOU feel/do/interpret cosplay?

*Shuck: toss aside, abandon, leave at home, don't wear, etc.

If there's a post like this, please tell me!

Because it's such a new style that's just starting to bud into mainstream, I wouldn't cosplay it. All that would do is cement the notion that it's just a crazy costume and not a fashion.

Besides, it's my weekend gettup for trolling the streets of the international district and pike place market. Why would I wear something I can wear every weekend to the most photographed freak show of the year?

People can judge (and do) the girls who wear skimpy costumes on Halloween or to conventions, but really? Year round, Mon-Fri I have to be a professional little lady and Sat-Sun I get to be an empress. Halloween and Sakuracon are my only times to be a jaw dropping, barely clad heartthrob and not feel insecure about it.

And THAT is why I do cosplay, but NOT lolita. Or anything demure and graceful for that matter.

Hmm, honestly I don't know since I don't know much about decora, but I think it too is a regular weekend fashion thing and not cosplay. But if it's not YOUR regular fashion, then yeah, I suppose it could be cosplay.

Sorry, I meant cosplay quality or themed lolita outfits. Like Alice or little bo peep themed or made of shiny or cheap cosplay quality materials. Hinata sounds like a cute cosplay though. What did you mean by tried? Did it not go so well? I've had a few costume disasters myself ^__^;

I enjoy looking too... unless it's really bad crossplay, ha ha!

Shuck: verb. (slang) To toss aside and abandon an article on ones person for an occasion, situation, or circumstance. "I like to shuck my work clothes and hit the town in club-wear on Friday nights." And all I mean is do you cosplay something that isn't even remotely similar to lolita, like ninja (hinata counts) or sailor scout, etc. smile

Yes. Yes it is. smile

Have any of you ever worn a regular lolita/kodona outfit to a convention as a costume?
I have worn lolita to a convention [several conventions in reality], but not as a costume or as part of a cosplay. Usually, if I go to a convention, I wear normal streetwear [so I can take photos inconspicuously!] or a costume [mmn, I-no]. However, lately, I've been going to a lot of conventions with fellow lolitas, or running panels at them, which means I end up wearing lolita instead. I don't see anything wrong with it, since. Well. It did spawn in Japan, and it's not like I wouldn't wear it to hang out with those girls if we were elsewhere.

Do any of you own cosplay quality lolita or themed lolita outfits for the purpose of cosplaying?
Not exactly. I have a zombie-themed guro outfit I wore to a Zombie prom at a bar last year, and I own some "cosplay quality" pieces from Bodyline that were purchased with the intent of wearing them out clubbing, though. Alcohol + sweat + potential puking ... no thanks to wearing brand for the night. The zombie outfit is closer to cosplay in the end, because it was made specifically for that event, out of materials that I wouldn't mind pouring a ton of fake blood all over [ie: cheap fabric and a home-made sailor cutsew]. I also wore vampire fangs when I went to Oni-con, because it was Halloween and I was meant to be a vampire. Again. Not really costumey aside from that one detail.

Do you despise cosplay?
Not exactly, no.

How do YOU feel/do/interpret cosplay?
Cosplay is just about having fun playing dress up on a different level from lolita. There are a lot of commonalities, even though they're not remotely close to being the same thing.

A lot of new lolitas start as "cosplay" lolitas, or only wear lolita to conventions. It's a place where social standards and norms get tossed out the window [sometimes, not for the better], so they feel safer in being "weird" and "unusual" in that environment. It's sort of the same reason that people feel comfortable enough at conventions to walk around in nothing but their underwear [don't understand this phenomenon].

Anyway. Lolitas at conventions who are "doing it wrong" won't have to hear it from me. They're there to enjoy themselves, and I'm certainly not going to rub their faces in the fact that their dress has cheap lace, or that their converse don't match their skirt. They're just having fun.

Now, if that self-same lolita posts online, I might offer some critique. But that's not the same thing.

That being said, have any of you ever worn a regular lolita/kodona outfit to a convention as a costume?

I have worn it, but not as a costume. I have also worn my favorite kimono, but not as a costume. I wear them as outfits and I wear them to a place where I won't get as many funny looks. That said, I try to get good quality cosplay that I can wear every day, too. I wore my Black Order coat to class multiple times in high school. My dad didn't like lolita, so I had to ease him into it by only wearing it to conventions at first.

Do any of you own cosplay quality or themed outfits for the purpose of cosplaying?

I own a cosplay quality one that I bought at a costume shop in Japan. I do not own any themed lolitas. I own a pink OP, which is probably more cosplay quality than anything...I'm thinking of turning it into a guro lolita, but I don't really want to do that to a dress...I also dressed up as Allen Walker in lolita...that was fun...

Do you despise cosplay?

No. I like it...I know some people who like it too much...I'd prefer to spend my money on lolita now, so I'll probably be wearing more lolita to cons, because it's the most beautiful apparel that I own. Actually, I might skip the cons all together and spend the badge and hotel fees on lolita...

Or do you shuck the bonnets and run around in ninja attire for the weekend? Got pics?

A Pictue!
I'm the one with the red hand. I made that hand out of a gardening glove and a lot of duct tape. I made it duct tape fingernails with duct tape cuticles as well. I even embedded a plastic cross in the center. I'm so proud of it! love making strange props and accessories!

How do YOU feel/do/interpret cosplay?
Cosplay is fun. I don't make my own costumes. My favorite part of being a character is putting on a show and acting like that character while in that costue. I like theatre and acting, so that's how I look at it. There are people who cosplay lolitas, but I'm not one of them. When the weather is nice, IO wear my lolita to class, but I live near the sea, so I have to be careful...

Oh wow. I didn't even think about that when I posted before. You're right, there's lolita panels and photoshoots and meet ups. I just assumed that all "lolita" at conventions are in coquettish maid costumes, but there are lots of true lolita. If I was going with others or to a panel or meet up, I'd lolita at a convention too.

And cosplay quality for the purpose of practicality is something I hadn't thought of either. Way to save quality clothes from puke!

Also, I saw ur zombie pic. Nice.

That being said, have any of you ever worn a regular lolita/kodona outfit to a convention as a costume?

No, because then when I wear quality lolita, people will assume I'm still cosplaying, and I want this budding fashion to have a fighting chance in the US. But I agree with spuntino, that there's nothing wrong with wearing lolita to a convention. People aren't always cosplaying, it could be for meet ups, panels, etc. I don't consider that cosplay. It's real lolitas meeting in a place where they can blend in without the stares.

Do any of you own cosplay quality lolita or themed lolita outfits for the purpose of cosplaying?

No. I do have the skimpy alice dresses for halloween, though. :3

Do you despise cosplay?

Love it actually.

Or do you shuck* the bonnets and run around in ninja attire for the weekend? Got pics?

I'm a bonnet shucker, since none of my costumes have anything to do with any existing fashion, anywhere. Unless you know of some strange land where people dress like Tekken characters on a regular basis.

No pics, I'm camera shy. I have one cosplay pic in the pic thread. That's all you get. For now at least.

I cosplayed as Harley Quinn from Batman and I wore a black and red dress that was very "Harley" but still lolita at the same time.

Do you despise cosplay?

Nope, as long as they are accurate and have work put into them.

Or do you shuck* the bonnets and run around in ninja attire for the weekend? Got pics?

I dont cosplay often, but when I do its usually lolita themed or from video games like Bioshock(scary nurse people) or something cute like Pokemon, so its hard to say. Yes I do have pics of me as Harley,

Sorry I really knew what shuck meant, I was trying to be funny...I guess I failed. Sorry...

And yes I have wear my very lame attempt at lolita before. BUT since it was Anime Expo, most assume I was cosplaying. But as for Hinata cosplay. I had everything ready...then changed my mind at the last minute sweatdrop

I wore lolita to AX, but I don't consider it as a costume because technically it's considered as a fashion. (If not in America, it is considered as a fasion in Japan.)

Do any of you own cosplay quality lolita or themed lolita outfits for the purpose of cosplaying?

I use to own cosplay quality lolita. Now, I'm just an AP fanatic.
(No, deco lolita is not cosplay lolita. It's a sector of sweet lolita. It's only considered as cosplay lolita if your dress is poorly made with cheap lace.)

Do you despise cosplay?
No.

Or do you shuck* the bonnets and run around in ninja attire for the weekend? Got pics?
No

How do YOU feel/do/interpret cosplay?

I think cosplay is great, if a person can pull off the character well or just have a fantastically made outfit.

have any of you ever worn a regular lolita/kodona outfit to a convention as a costume?
Not as a costume. But I have worn it. Sometimes I feel a little disappointed that I am wearing lolita to a convention, but that's only the disappointment of not having finished my costumes.

Do any of you own cosplay quality lolita or themed lolita outfits for the purpose of cosplaying?
No. But I do intend to make a themed lolita for a cosplay group. As I sit in a corner drawing and not making eye contact all the time, and am constantly in the company of my big sister who cosplays Marluxia (Kingdom Hearts), I got sort of absorbed into being the Namine for her group.
There has been talk of doing a Wonderland world form Organization, and I plan on making a "White Queen" shiro loli inspired by Namine. With a little silver crown, of course. I'm thinking twisted wire and ribbons at this point.

Do you despise cosplay?
Not at all. I have the greatest respect for cosplayers who do it well. And I seem to be surrounded by them.

Or do you shuck* the bonnets and run around in ninja attire for the weekend? Got pics?
And I do cosplay myself. Mostly Sadako and Sweeney Todd recently. Oh, and I do intend to wear Mary again. And yet everyone thinks of me as Namine. My current Namine is terrible and I will not photograph it until I replace my wig and make a new dress.

How do YOU feel/do/interpret cosplay?
Cosplaying is making clothing to assume a character. If you aren't a particular person, just a girl in a frilly dress, you're not cosplaying. However, if you make a dress and try to act "lolita", if you don't normally, that's pushing it.

@firelily808- Oh... Yeah, I see that now... It was funny, I'm just dense... That and I'm so used to people not knowing what the heck I'm saying half the time... ^__^;

Anyway, you should wear it sometime! Hinata is a cute character to cosplay!

@vampiredroid- Nice pics! Especially that second one.

@ everyone else- Thanks! This is really insightful, and I get to know you all better too!

@Razeasha- kimono pics? I've never had the opportunity see anyone wear a real one to a convention before (probably because I've never held still long enough to get through the tea ceremony line...) but I'd like to next year. I know someone is bound to wear one. So elegant yet so complicated...

I'll try to take a few over winter break...I have gotten nagajuban and obijime, since the last time I wore one. I usually only wear them for special occasions...

Well, many anime/mangas wear casual clothes but that doesn't makes the clothes a costume since almost every kind of clothing is already worn by a character so everything could be counted as cosplay. People seem to forget that cosplay means costume play, to count something as cosplay it would have to include being the "charater" as whole and not only wearing clothes like the character got. That is the reason why any kind of fashion where you are yourself and not somebody else from the personality/acting not a cosplay.
