So, I've been feeling down and I knew ATG was the right place to find those that care. This coming Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, my family and I are putting our family dog down. I guess we should have been expecting it sooner or later. She is 15 years old, a Shetland Sheepdog that I've had my whole life. I don't remember I time without my Oreo. She's like a sister. A month or two ago, she developed a tumor in her sinuses. We knew from there it wouldn't be good. It was one of those situations where "you'll know when it's time". And it's time. She's mostly blind now and just not having a great life hence the decision to end her suffering. I just can't fathom a time without her. She's always been there when I needed a fluffy hug or just someone to cry with.
As a way to remember her, I've decided to keep one of her tags (a little red fire hydrant that has her name and phone number) and make it into a necklace. It's a sweet gesture and I've been def trying to enjoy my last few days with her as they get narrowed down. Just needed some support and some cheering up. I know it's horrible to be going through this now with thanksgiving. it just sucks.

I'm sorry to hear this really sad I've lost too many loved pets to count and it's just ...really hard. I think that's a great idea to make a necklace. I really don't know what else to say so... *hugs*

I remember losing our dog that was like a brother to me. I stayed home from school and everything. It's hard and it sucks and I really wish things didn't die, however such is life. It sounds like you're actually dealing quite well with making the last few days ones that are great. I'm not sure if you're going to watch as they put her down, but if you do, it's heart wrenching! Just horrible to watch! I remember watching a dog that was violent and attacked it's owner get put down, and I cried. There's nothing to compare watching the life leave something. If you choose to be there and comfort her as she passes please ready yourself for that moment. *is almost in tears thinking of it now*
I think keeping the tag and making it a necklace is a wonderful idea. For a while I wore my dogs choker chain as well, but my parents worried it would catch on something and choke me to death, so I hung it in my room forever. Now that I have kids it's safely packed away in a box.
If you have any questions, or anything else at all that you want to talk about, then by all means, I'm sure I can safely say for the whole guild, we're here for you!

Holy smokes, she lived to be 73 years old (converted), a good, long life. Make sure to keep all the good memories.
Stay strong. :3

Aww *hug*
A good dog is one of the best things out there. The love of a good dog surpasses the love of any person.

I saw a chart in a vet clinic and the whole 1 human year is equal 7 dog years isn't true. It's also different for different sized dogs. Here is the chart! I found it fascinating, and a bit upsetting because it was only last week, to learn that the whole 7 years thing is bullshit.

Oh, I'm so sorry, that is something that is really hard to deal with. My last dog, whose name was Wilbur, my parents had before they had me. We finally had to put him down when I was in fifth grade. I watched them do it, and I personally advise that you don't. It was bad, I cried for days after the fact.
The necklace is a wonderful idea, the vet that put down my dog wouldn't relinquish the body for us to bury. Instead, we buried the collar and tags. To this day, I wish we had done different.

Losing a pet can be heart wrenching. Losing one slowly to illness or injury even more so. Stay strong. The tag idea sounds great... and if you can get a little of her fur, maybe put it in a locket. That is another way to remember her.

I'm def not going to the vet's. I'll say goodbye here and that's where it stops. I simply can't do it. My mom and sister are going to take me shopping after to take our minds off it. As long as I don't think about it, it's a little bit better. Thanks for all the stories. It's nice to know I'm not alone. And, according to GRM's chart, she would be 83 (medium breed). Again, thanks guys.

Anytime! Do you have lots of pictures with you and her? Pictures always help! I had plenty of my dog and I when I was a kid, and it made it so much easier when I would miss him.

My kitty died of undiagnosed leukemia while I was on vacation and the one before him my mom put down without telling me. I recommend going with them if you can, it's something I feel terrible about still, not being there for them. -Formerly La Belle Isolde-

The grass is always greener...
You should do what you feel you can handle. If you think you can handle being beside her while she's being put down then go. If you think it'll be too much for you to handle then don't go.

I didn't say she had to >_>
I just said if she can. It's a hard thing to do, but it really upsets me that Blacky died alone and that I never got to say goodbye to Frisky. -Formerly La Belle Isolde-
