A friend said in order to travel to countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia, my husband & I need an official marriage license that we are married in Islam. And honestly, we're not married in Islam. We had a non-religious (but legal) wedding ceremony with like 10 people :/

We plan on getting married in Islam when he immigrates to America (insha allah)

Is there truth to this? In which countries?
What about when going to Hajj, what prove do we need saying we're Muslims? ((Since non-Muslims are not permitted in Mecca))

That is a very, very good question.

In the case of marriage, to the best of my knowledge, marriage before Islam is still recognized and does not need to be reasserted. That is, the marriage of the sahabah before Islam was still upheld and considered valid.

In the case of proving that one is a Muslim, I am not sure. I know that in some countries, your religious affiliation is included in your passport. However, in America, that is not the case. Nonetheless, many American Muslims manage to preform the Hajj with little trouble, and Allâh knows best.

To be honest I'm not sure about Saudi in general, I really don't know.

I do know that when going on Hajj, a certificate of your being a muslim is probably necessary, seeing as non-muslims are indeed not allowed to enter Mecca. As a revert especially I suppose it'd be wise to have this certificate. I don't have it myself, yet, but most mosques here provide them and ratify them. I believe I'll need one when I go to Mecca with my husband insha'Allah.

While we are married, Islamically, we don't have the certificate at home because we don't have a civil (legal) marriage and the mosque cannot give us the certificate until we also have a legal marriage. Until then they're keeping it safe for us.
