Islam and science are often portrayed as opposing forces, but muslim scientists have brought a few scientific discoveries. The first ones I noticed were in an old chemistry book ciing the works of Geber and the second was in my math manual which cited that the tangent wasn't an Indian invention. This conflicted with my then media-influenced (it was 2k3 or so) view of Muslims and it helped spark me into discovering more about the Arabic world in general, so I thought I should make a thread and share what I know and see if people also have something to share.

Among those I know are:

The first written example of the scientific method is traced back to the region of Turkey. It was coined by Geber, a Muslim scientist.

The alembic (irronically used to distill alcohol) was invented by Muslims to purify medicines and perfumes.

The acids and bases used to purify and shine precious metals were refined by Muslims exposed to acids and bases under Roman rule.

The trigonometric functions other than Sine and Cosine (tangent FTW)

The astrolabe was invented by Muslim scientists to find the Qibla wherever they were.

It's amazing that so many inventions are Muslim, yet receive no credit.
(The Indians are to blame for copying/improving most of those (they did invent the Sine and Cosine, though) and exposing the West to it first via trade)

I think the Western world believes that science and religion should be separate b/c of all the turmoil the Church created in the science field. In Islam, the Quran is the springboard for Mankind learning more about the Creation and finding solutions to problems. Science and religion go hand in hand.

Science and religion go hand in hand.

It's true. While many Christian denominations never change according to science, most other faiths adapt themselves or learn to interpret the same scriptures differently. Being faithful doesn't mean forgoing the discovery of the world no matter what your creation myth is.
Many Christian creationists do make me LOL when they try to interpret the bible literally. Even Muhammad made it so that time flowed differently in heaven so that the 7-day myth would be believable. It was a brilliant interpretation that made everything fit together and work according to the scientific discoveries of the time (they already suspected the earth was older than 6'000 earth years old due to astronomical evidence. Plus the Arab world never adopted a flat-earth theory.)

I still wonder how religion would react if we found life (sentient or not) on another planet.

However I got to say that Muhammad pbuh never wrote the Quran. Allaah made His Creation as He Saw fit and He revealed the Quran (which tells about His Creation) to Muhammad pbuh through the Angel, Gabriel. Muhammad pbuh could not read or write.

And He found you unaware (of the Qur'ân, its legal laws, and Prophethood, etc.) and guided you? (Ad-Duha 93:7)

The seven day idea of the Christian was b/c the Bible said Allaah rested on the seventh day.

This doesnt fit into Islam b/c Allaah states in the Quran He Doesnt Sleep and He Needs no rest.

Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter . And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. [This Verse 2:255 is called Ayat-ul-Kursî.] (Al-Baqarah 2:255)

We have our Juma'a on Friday which was the day the Creation was assembled and Adam pbuh was created by Allaah SWT.

Islamically speaking there was creation on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Allaah was finished with His Creation before Satuday, the seventh day of the week.

Al-A'raf - 7:54
Indeed your Lord is Allâh, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days, and then He Istawâ (rose over) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty). He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly, and (He created) the sun, the moon, the stars subjected to His Command. Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment. Blessed be Allâh, the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists)! (Al-A'raf 7:54)

I love the fact that Islam is a religion that promotes science. Muslims also invented Algebra and performed some of the first eye surgeries for cateracts. I think that they should get more credit. People today look at Islam as a backwards religion; they need to be reminded that the followers of Islam brought many of the modern practices into the world.

I'm sorry to say the concept of Zero was ''invented'' in it's written form was invented by the Babylonians, which were assimilated by the Persians in the 500s' BCE.
Arithmetic principles were known in central Africa in 18'000 BC. This is another principle the Babylonians ''invented'' a written form for.

I used quotes because the Babylonians didn't invent anything per se, they just wrote down oral principles for the first time ever in their scriptures.

idea I like giving credit, but only to the real innovator(s). idea

Also, I'm really glad they invented the first soap not based on ash. Washing myself with dirt seems counter-intuitive, even if African tribes demonstrated mud is quite an effective cleanser and great for the skin.

Well its not 'clean' but it's good for the skin.
Have you never heard of someone getting a mud bath or a mud based facial?

Mud can help clear acne, skin conditions, make skin smooth, improve circulation & help reduce signs of aging.

But dont just go to your garden and mix dirt & water then smear it on your face! Facial muds are made from specific natural ingredients.

Just to complement Apple Juice's post, mud cleans by grabbing onto dirt as it dries, forming a crust. Chipping off the dirt then removes any impurities from the skin, such as sebum and oil. It takes soil with a high proportion of clay, though. It's the first form of effective self-cleaner and many nomad tribes in Africa and the Middle-east still use it to this day.
Most spas have started to offer it instead of dermabrasion, since it achieves similar results without being very invasive.

Algebra and Distillation are both cool.

Interestingly, the word Algebra comes from the Arabic "Al-Jabr", literally: "the act of binding or connecting two separate parts", especially when mending something broken, such as a broken bone (or even a broken heart, figuratively). For example, the Arabic word for an orthopedic cast is "Jabïrah".
