Sign up for an account on an image hosting site such as photobucket.com or imageshack.us
Upload pics to that account
Link to them on Gaia.

For current profiles, click edit my profile layout, click picture and go to the URL tab. Then copy/paste the URL of the image you want to use and save.

 In addition to the above,
If you want images in the part of your profile where all the text & stuff goes, go to, via the tabs & drop down lists on the purple bar above, "My Gaia" >> "Account Settings" >> "About Me" .
Also, in order for the picture to show up, you have to use the following code, without the *s :
[img*]url of the image goes here[/img*]
If you want to be able to stick pictures all over your profile, I believe you can still do that by going to "Preferences" ("My Gaia" >> "Account Settings" >> "Preferences") & changing your "Profile Theme" to "Current".
In regards to OV8ION's comment, I'd definitely recommend using tinypic.com to host your images.
