The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is going to be 10 books long. Jordan wrote 9 of them before he died, and intended on writing another. He kept such good notes that another author who's a fan of the series is going to write the final installment for him. Anyway, have any of you read any of them?

It's difficult to explain because there's so much going on at once. Plus, I only read the first two books, and I didn't even finish the second one. sweatdrop They were good, but I wanted to read other things.

One main aspect of it is that only women can be magical. If a girl is found to have powers she joins one of the arcane guilds, which sometimes fued with one another. Men that are magical are rare and have more power than the women, but they are normally killed because the power makes them lose their minds. The main character is a magical male, and the Dark Lord tries to get him to join his side. The main character and his friends fight creatures that work for the Dark Lord.

Maybe I read too many Harry Potter fan fictions, but Rand, Mat, and Perrin remind me a bit of James, Sirius and Remus. They're all brave and noble for the most part. Rand is very interested in a girl, Mat loves to joke, and Perrin is quiet with an affinity towards wolves. Perrin is my favourite character in the Wheel of Time...I bet NO ONE would've guessed that!

I've read the entire series to date, and sobbed over the phone at my husband when I found out Mr. Jordan was gone.

The series is made of win. The entire set of books has a majestic pace, excellent sensory descriptions, and three-dimensional characters with brains - well, some more than others. The whole point of the story was to have echoes of every known culture, mythology and folklore, thus echoing the theme of an endless turning of the Wheel of Time, with each revolution throwing up echoes of the ancient past and distant future. People who dig on folklore love teasing out the references, some of which are glaringly obvious, while others are pretty sly. It's one of the few fantasy series I've run across where the women have something to do other than pout, be noble or worry. My favorite characters are still Mat and Perrin, though. Well, and Egwene. She kicks so much a** the bubblegum factory had to leave the country.

And lately the talk has been that it's going to be two more books, or possibly even three more, in order to keep the pace right and fit everything in. Robert Jordan left copious notes. I *hope* the new guy knows what he's doing. Either way, once the final volumes are out I'm certain I'll have to reread all of them, in order.

[guilty]I, uh...decided to reread all of them now. My goal is to finish rereading them all over summer break. I didn't think it was possible, but the story is even more interesting/funny when you know what's going to happen! biggrin

I didn't know that about the culture/folklore, but now that you mention it I see your point, like about how in Rand's town only women of age can braid their hair. That's very cool that Jordon wanted to include everything! cool

I think the whole point was that he wanted to write something that could be either the "correct" version of past events that became garbled until it became our legend as we know it, or could be far-future echoes of the things we know and love today. Or both! When you get far enough into the series, they flash back to the Age of Legends, and it sounds very much like futuristic scifi. It's the kind of thing to make a folklore junkie like me drool~!

It's been a while, but I've read them all. I also didn't know the culture thing. It makes sense though. It's one of my favorite series. My favorite character is Min. She's just so spunky and sweet! It's almost impossible NOTto love her!

Min is pretty awesome, I do concur. I'm on book 3 now, where she has to be "Elmindreda". LOL!
