What's you favourite fantasy creature?

Personally, sidhe are what I like best. They're faeries that are part of ancient Celtic lore. I like them because in the few novels that do write about them, they tend to be tall and have real power, unlike the tiny, cutesy fey that merely glitter and help mortal princesses in distress. They're so beautiful and in-tune with nature. Elves generally are too, but the power of the sidhe make them more captivating than elves.

Dragons are second favourite. I love them when then human/supieriour-to-human intelligence. It's entertaining how some writers potray the cunning creatures as evil (such as The Hobbit), and others depict them as being generally benevolent (like Eragon). A wyvern is probably the type of dragon that I like the most, but they're all interesting.

I'd have to go with Unicorns. I'm wearing a unicorn necklace I got two weeks ago, and I have several Unicorn statuettes, plus two Unicorn posters hanging on my walls. stare Yep. I'm a definite Unicorn fan. And Harry Potter just confirmed that. I mean, baby unicorns with a pure gold coat? How cute is that?

Although Dragons are a close second. Like Min, I like human/superior-to-human intelligence depictions of dragons.

And so, I absolutely love the book that introduced me to mythological creatures, and the artwork in it is absolutely breathtaking. It's The Voyage of the Bassett by James Christensen. It has a unicorn and a dragon, as well as dwarves, gremlins, ogres, trolls, faeries, and more.

I don't know.....................

But I'd have to say that elves come first, followed VERY closely by dragons. But I also totally get what Minerva is saying: Sidhe are very cool. However, I sort of connect them with elves a lot. I know that they are not............. but, you know....................

Matelia, unicorns are my mum's favourite too! 4laugh Yeah, intelligent dragons are the best, biggrin not merely beasts. I've got to be honest and say that in Harry Potter I don't like the portrayel of dragons.

Haha, go Gemmina! Way to be loyal to the theme of the guild! razz The sidhe's powers make me like them better than elves. Plus, there are series, like LotR and Eragon, where the entire race of elves are good (Boring!), but in books about sidhe they always have some good as well as some evil.

I'd have to say that my personal favorite are mermaids. Ever since I was a little girl, I've wanted to be one. I can still remember putting my legs together, and my arms out in front of me swimming in my Grandpa's pool, pretending I was a mermaid. There's just something about them that enchants me.

If I absolutely positively had to pick, I'd probably say a phoenix. I love birds like that- hawks and falcons and things. Phoenixes seem like... I don't know, like maybe they can see and feel things we can't. You know? They understand things, I guess.
Elves are a very, very close second, though. (I don't know much about sidhe.) Maybe a phoenix would be my favorite mythical beast, and elves my favorite mything human-like thing. I agree with Minerva; If you're going to have good elves, you've got to have bad elves, like with people. Only elves are cooler.

Hmm. I'd have to say my first pick is elves; but only the type of elves in Lord of the Rings and Eragon, not cute little glittery things who dance about. In Eragon, elves have real power.
Second would be dragons. They are just awesome, and I think it would be so cool to fly like a dragon. It's also neat how some series depict them as nasty, evil, villains, while others show them as being kind and caring, or a mix of the two. I also think it's neat how in nearly every book, dragons are extremely smart.
Third.. either centaurs or unicorns. They're both horselike (and horses are awesome). Sometimes when people ask me about the weather, I say "Mars is bright tonight". That's from the first Harry Potter book.

I don't really have a top favorite. I like Unicorns, Drow, Vampires, Mermaids... I guess I don't really have favorites, I like them all! lol XD

My favorite fantasy creature would have to be a dragon, and fairies, and, and all of them. I think that most of them are just so majestic, specially the dragon. The dragon is my all time favorite animal, real or fantasy!! They are just sooo cool!!

Squeee~!!! I love that book, he's one of my favorite artists! I have a picture of his in my living room, advertising his exhibit in the Delaware Museum of Art - Fantasies of the Sea. It's got all mer-creatures and lionfish in, it's made of awesome. And I've got his "Two Angels Discussing Botticelli" hanging in my son's room, and "Evening Music" (I think that's the title) in my daughter's room. Because every child's room needs an angel or two in it. I even have his set of nativity figures!

On the sidhe/elf debate - in most folklore, the sidhe ARE elves. As the noblest of the fae races, they're considered the rulers, of sorts.

My favorite fantasy creature is also the phoenix - it's powerful, powerfully good, and a symbol of the triumph of life and light over darkness and death. I even teach a Qi Gong form called The Dance of the Phoenix. If you like phoenixes and haven't read Terry Pratchett's "Carpe Jugulem", I can't recommend it enough.

Runner-up is my childhood fondness for trolls, which I can trace back to one specific illustrator - John Bauer. If you haven't seen a troll drawn and painted by John Bauer, you're really missing the heart and soul of them. Remember, of course, that in Scandinavian legends (where trolls come from), they can be good or bad, but are invariably simply wild.

I've never heard that before, so I'm not sure that I can agree or disagree. Interestingly enough, the authors that I've read that include sidhe in their books (Holly Black, Laurel K. Hamilton, Anne Kelleher, Katherine Kurtz, Deborah Turner-Harris,) NEVER include both elves AND sidhe. Why does an author only write or the other? Very intriguing...

I love how everyone is picking different animals! We've got sidhe, dragons, unicorns, elves, basilisks, mermaids, phoenixes, and trolls. I'm so proud of The Bookcase's diversity!!!

In fact, I'm so proud that I'm giving everyone that has already posted in this thread 2 points. smile
