She wrote the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series and the Merry Gentry Faerie Detective series. All right, elves, discuss!

-bangs head against the wall-

I absolutely ADORED the Anita Blake series BEFORE it turned into one huge orgy. lol The plot and characters were well thought out and just freaking awesome! Then it's like all the fame and fan fair went to Hamilton's head and all of a sudden my favorite animator was staring in magical orgy after magical orgy. It literally made me sick to my stomach. Not the orgies per say, but the complete destruction of the moral values and ideology of my favorite vampire slaying heroine.

Another thing that beefed me was Jean Claude basically became some backstage sex toy.. He's one of the most seductive vampires on the planet and he's having to beg for the slightest touch.. I don't think so.

The Merry Gentry series suffered the same fate. I stuck with this series for a little bit, since it was faey oriented and faey lore is pretty clear on their promiscuous nature, so I expected quite a bit of decadence, but Hamilton really laid it on too thick.

Not to mention Merry really doesn't do any REAL detective work anymore. Most of her days are spent in one sexual position or another and dodging assassination attempts. Honestly.. it's like reading about a normal day for Paris Hilton.

In the beginning I enjoyed both of these series, but now, I haven't even bothered to read the latest books from either series. I only got that far because I kept thinking.. well it can't get any worse! I was so .. wrong. lol

I like reading the Merry Gentry because
a) There aren't enough books with sidhe as main characters.
b) I read it for the smut.

I can see why it might annoy you, Cricket, if you were reading for plot, but I peruse it specifically because I like the sex with the magical elements in it. And I enjoy the characters, of course. No matter how good a plot is, I won't enjoy it if the characters aren't fun to read about. Why should i care if they are victorious or disgraced, living or dead, if I don't care about them personally? Rhys, Galen, Doyle, Barinthus, Usna, and Sholto are (in that order) my fave characters from the series.

Because I was expecting sex and fun characters, I was disappointed when I read the first Anita Blake, so I didn't read the rest. Jean-Claude was the only character that I liked (besides the ones that were killed by the time the book ended) and Anita never did anything intimate in nature. It bored me because it didn't meet my expectations.

My favourite books, like Harry Potter, don't have sex at all. It's just that when I go into a book expecting to see it and it isn't there...Well, it's quite a let-down.

I read and write lots of work on "adult fan fiction" sites. Can you tell? wink

I wouldn't say that Hamilton is one of my favourite authors of all time, but if you're specifically looking for smut with a fantasy twist, then Merry Gentry is my top recommendation! That scene with Mistral in the 4th book was AMAZING!

I really like this author, I think my favorites have been her story collection "Strange Candy" for the originallity of some of the short stories, the first Anita Blake (I'm a Philip fan <3) and I like Meredith Gentry as well. The comics for Anita Blake that came out recently are wonderful as well, from what I've seen Laurell K. Hamilton is VERY involved, she was in charge of the writing of the comics, the transfer from novel to comic dialogue form. ^_^ She said in an interview that it was tough, but also fun.

I have three of the graphic novels, actually as far as content they're not so bad so far, but then again the first book didn't have a lot "R" scenes.

*shrug* Most comics these days are not in fact "age-appropriate", even the ones that don't go in the "18+ ONLY" section. I actually have been loathe to start either of these series because all I ever hear about is the cornucopia of sex. I feel like if I'm even seen holding a book with the author's name on it, I might as well be wearing a pair of pink fuzzy comfy cuffs. Maybe I'll try them out later, when my kids are old enough to be completely uninterested in whatever I'm reading.

Ah, yes, that's true. 3nodding

Nanny, there is indeed a great deal of sex. I'll tell you which Merry Gentry books have the most:

1 – All sex and almost no plot. Every event (assassination attempts and so forth) is an excuse to get to another sex scene. I liked it, though!

2 – Out of all of the books in the series, this is the one with the most amount of plot and the least amount of sex. It was a decent plot too. smile

3 – This one might be my fave in the series; it contains the first threesome that I’ve ever read, ergo it’s special to me! lol There’s also a good balance of sex and plot.

4 - This book recounts the events of ONE day…Yeah, it was a long day! biggrin It has the best intimate scene in the series: The one with Mistral, the god of storms...*sighs dreamily* Rhys, Galen, and Doyle are my fave characters, but the scenes with them weren't even close to being as hot as this one. If you can believe it, this book also has good character development! razz

5 - This book was horrible. No interesting plot, character development, intimate scenes, or anything. The only reason I continued reading the series after this was because the 4 novels before it were fairly good.

6 - Having much more plot than intimacy, this installment succeeded in making me like Frost, a character that I'd thoroughly disliked until this point.

7 & 8 – I haven’t read them yet, but they’re on my shelf, so I’ll get to them eventually!
