Which male characters (from fantasy books as well as other genres) are your favourites of all time? What books are they from, and what makes them worthy of the Hall of Fame? I'm anticipating mostly honourable men here, but feel free to pick a villain if you think he's amazing enough to earn it!

Remus Lupin from Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE CHARACTER FROM ABSOLUTELY ANY SERIES!!! exclaim exclaim exclaim
He's a source of inspiration for me. Whenever I feel myself breaking I remind myself, "Remus suffers painful transformations every month, and rather than be admired for coping with it, he's shunned. But does he quit trying? No. In fact, he's even cordial to people that he knows would mistreat him if they knew about his condition. He remains pleasant and cheerful around his friends because he doesn't want to bring down their moods due to his problems. So, stop complaining, get up, and find somehing to smile about. It's what Remus would do."
Years ago, in school when students had to write about who their hero was I wrote about him. heart Mine was one of the few that the teacher chose to put on display. Yes, I still remember this.
I also love Winntrow from Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb. He's a fourteen year-old studying to become a priest and his outlook is very profound. The way his personality develops from an idealistic boy to a man is beautifully done.
Peregrine Lovat from The Adept by Katherine Kurtz and Deborah Turner-Harris is what I'd want my son to be like if I had a son, which is odd considering that he's about thirty years old. sweatdrop He's a painter that is incredibly endearing, and because he's an artist he notices unusual details about things that others overlook. He starts off the first book as being suicidal, but becomes a confident individual. The development of his character is as well-done as Winntrow's.
My favourite villian is without question Artemis Fowl from Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. (He's only the "bad guy" in book one of the series.) I love villains that have redeeming qualities that cause the reader to actually not want them to lose to the "good guys." I also adore having my villians be arrogant, clever, and humourous in a sarcastic way. Artemis not only meets these expectations, but exceeds better than any other villain.

Elric of Melniboné (Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock) Elric is, for me, the coolest antihero I've ever come across. Ok he runs a close race with Jarlaxle and Artemis Entreri. However Elric is older then they are, so that's why I listed him first! lol A tormented and despondent ruler he embarks on the most incredible quests with his demonic sword Stormbringer eventually killing all those close to him as well as himself. It's just such a trip to read!
Artemis Entreri (The Crystal Shard and other Forgotten Realms books) I haven't read every book with him in it, but the ones I have read definitely have me really liking this character despite myself. A ruthless assassin, his character development has taken on a smidgen of humanity and I think that is what draws me to him. A bad guy with the potential to do something good, even if he makes up superficial reasons for doing the good deed. lol
Jarlaxle (The Crystal Shard and other Forgotten Realms books as well) What can I say! You have to love a dangerous and calculated dark elf that realizes not slaying every human in sight might actually be beneficial for his business! A smidgen more likable personality wise then Entreri, but just as deadly and a total antihero. These two make a great duo in The Crystal Shard.
Trent Kalamack (The Hollows series by Kim Harrison) Gah! What can I say.. I LOVE to HATE this guy! A billionaire charismatic elf, in hiding, who runs a genetic laboratory under the table to try and fix the genetic curse placed on his elven species (that will eventually cause them to become extinct). He'd almost be a nice guy, except, he'll kill anyone who gets in his way, do whatever it takes to get what he wants, and not lose a wink of sleep over it while your body decomposes at the bottom of a river. He'll do something almost.. good, and you'll just start to like him, when BAM he does something incredibly heinous and you're back to hoping Rachel rams her fist down his throat. I remember one of her books he wasn't hardly mentioned at all and I about cried. He is a hardcore favorite of mine! lol
The Goblin King (The Labyrinth played by David Bowie) Omg Omg Omg. -drools-
Raistlin Majere (Dragonlance) Without a doubt completely lacking a moral compass, but you find yourself enthralled and fascinated by this dark and ambitious character despite your best efforts to despise him. Partly because you watch the trials he must overcome and almost.. almost understand why he would sacrifice everyone he knew and loved to become all powerful.
Wow.. all kind of bad guys in one way or another so far.. hmm need a good guy. lol
Aragorn! (LOTR) Come on you know he's epic! All the cards were stacked against him, and he had to do what no one else would probably EVER want to have to face. Just his heritage alone would be a huge black mark on your self-esteem. Then to have everyone hurling it in your face all the time.. not only did you have to work up the courage to look yourself in the mirror, but have the courage to look everyone else in the eye too. And he didn't just turn a blind eye when Frodo needed his help, he stepped up to the plate right from the beginning and performed incredibly. As far as heroic virtue goes, I think Aragorn tops the cake. Plus Viggo Mortensen is hot. -winks-
Tanis Half-Elven (DragonLance series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman) The first lengthy fantasy novel I ever read. To this day, I adore this half-elf who totally made fantasy novels the bread and butter of my life. At war with his own blood, he was one of those characters like Remus Lupin who struggled to meet each new day with as much optimism as he could muster even though he knew people would curse him and distrust him as soon as they saw his pointed ears.

James Potter (Harry Potter by JKR) I love how he actually has flaws, yet not annoying ones. (Harry and the whininess in OotP did not work for me!) He is caring, loving, brave, compassionate (often times too much so), intelligent, funny, cunning (Oh dang, Slytherin quality haha), and so many other things in his own way. He was arrogant, which made me love him more. I mean who wants someone who is perfect. Gahh and his romance with Lily is amazing <3.
Jace Wayland (Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare) Gahh amazing. He and James are a lot alike... very very alike. (Except Jace doesn't have a romance with Lily hehe)

Hehe. Nice, Min and Suze. I'd put Remus and James on my list too. Since we don't have all four of the Marauders yet, I would like to add the other two, flawed though they may be.
I think I'll do this by series, so from Harry Potter by JK Rowling: Sirius Black, for his absolute loyalty and all around wonderfulness. And come on, you know you love the motorcycle. ^_^ Peter Pettigrew, for inspiring me to figure out what that little rat was thinking all throughout his childhood friendships and how that led to his betrayal of his friends and other villany. Severus Snape, he is certainly someone I loved to hate in the first few books, but the movies turned that into more of an endearment, and his backstory made the turn complete.
From the Belgariad series by David Eddings (the series starts with Pawn of Prophecy) Silk, or Prince Kheldar, for his sarcastic and extremely corrupt wit. I absolutely adored him throughout the series. Belgarath, how many times do you get to read about an all-powerful sorcerer that steals food and ale from his daughter's kitchens just for the fun of it? 'Zakath, he is the first cold, emotionless, heartless ruler that I knew through a story and understood his reasons for being like that.
Let me see. Artemis Fowl was already named. Hmm. Who else? I'm sure there are more... I'm just not thinking of them at the moment, so I'll come back with more when I think of them. ^_^

Matelia, I've got to agree that Severus is a really brilliant character. He's essentially a good person, but not a nice person at all. I always liked him from the beginning, though, and knew that he wasn't evil all along because that would have been obvious, which isn't JKR's style. Severus is very complex and interesting to analyse, so I actually did an English assignment on him also, but shh....Don't tell James and Sirius because I've never done one about either of them!
The Belgariad series by David Eddings is already on my "to read" list, and now I just want to read it more! razz
Cricket, Aragorn is a good call. He's definitely worthy of being in here. biggrin
Arkarian from The Guardians of Time by Marianne Curley is great, too. He's so wise and gentle. Plus, he's brave without being brash. The Guard would've lost centuries ago without him. Aaaaand...His blue hair and purple eyes are totally cool! cool

Edward Cullen and Jacob Black (Twilight Saga) for their unwavering devotion to Bella, despite what a b***h she is.
I'd love to nominate Legolas Greenleaf, but he is such a controversial character. 'Prety boy' and all. Also, he's an elf, and we are nothing if not BIASED (biesed? bised? I hate spelling!!)

Minerva the Bookwyrm The Belgariad series by David Eddings is already on my "to read" list, and now I just want to read it more! razz Read it! ^_^ It's what got me into reading fantasy and adventures. And I agree with what you said about Severus. I too thought he wasn't evil. I just didn't like him at first because he wasn't nice. razz
From the Redwall series by Brian Jacques: Veil, for creating the first situation in a book that made me cry upon reading it. Slagar aka Chickenhound, for convincing me that all events can be interpreted in such a way as to offend the actual offender. Basil, a hare that wants so much to become a stag that he takes that as his middle name. And besides, since it's a stag, I always think of James Potter and smile when I read that.
From Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine: Prince Charmont or Char, for actually being a character instead of just a Prince Charming.

Dang, you guys know how to pick 'em!! Elric and Belgarath and two mauraders already on here! heart
From Black Jewel Trilogy: Anne Bishop Lucivar Yaslana- Deeply loyal and strong. He deals with alot of torture as a slave in the first book. Hot-tempered, sarcastic and loves terrible black coffee. Also big points for having black wings. Daemon Sadi- seductive, sarcastic and dangerous. He is known as a male black widow in the series with a natural poison beneath one of his nails. A protector and healer, another strong character.
From Witch Boy: Russell Moon Marcus- the main character, a boy that has alot to deal with throughout book and starts by running. He's a character that changes and grows alot throughout the small three book series. very 3D and well-developed.
From Tales of Adrala: Andrew Suzanne (an up and coming author I highly recommend!!) Sye- the son of a mayor that is treated like nobility until his city falls apart. Alot like Marcus, he grows alot through the books. A leader and a level-headed thinker. Zook- a healer and aspiring doctor, but he has an unusual twist to him, he's short-tempered and a little angsty. A very original twist with him I think, he grew on me as the novel went on.

Luke Garroway/Lucian Greymark (Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare) He is awesome. He is a werewolf and is so fatherly. Luke is in love with Clary's mom and when Jocelyn puts Clary and herself in hiding when Clary was just a baby, Luke followed them to help protect them. During that whole time though, Luke never made his move on Jocelyn. He is protective, but not overly (Edward Cullen drove me nuts in the Twilight series drove me crazy because he was overprotective). He was quite fabulous.
((Gahh if I could do a TV show, I would so nominate Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls. (Haha, I know you all are probably laughing now.))

I would have to nominate Damien from the House of Night series. Is the most awesome guy like ever. He is really devoted to his friend, Zoey, and forgives her for lying to him and his other friends. Not to mention he is gay and gets excited when he buys Zoey's birthday present. I really like him because he is such a loyal friend!

He is a very complex character and I love that he has to find his humanity if he wants to save himself. (I'd say more about him, but then I'd spoil the whole 5th book xd )
